Jimi Hendrix’s infamous sacrifice of his guitar during ‘Wild Thing’, the last song of The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s life changing set at the Monterey Pop Festival on the 18th of June 1967

17 year old photographer Ed Caraeff who had never in his life seen or heard the music of Jimi Hendrix was front and centre and had been told by a stranger who took notice of his equipment to ‘record something’

“He had the biggest hands I had ever seen” said Caraeff about Jimi Fellow rock photographer who had already been on the scene for a number of years, Jim Marshall, was also at the concert, but couldn’t manage to capture the essence of Jimi’s performance as Ed’s shots succeeded to do - it’s no surprise; he was so close to Jimi that he could feel the heat coming from the guitar as it succumbed to flames 40 years later, Caraeff makes the comment: “Marshall simply didn’t have the angle”
