It bothers me when people baby Neil for being aspec and not seeing Andrew’s advances on Neil. Like yeah, Neil was oblivious but I think most of the readers were too until it was revealed. And people being like “oh he’s so baby” and infantilizing him isn’t cool.

Because if you’re like this with an aspec character, how do you treat aspec people in real life?

I think that Janus is able to attach himself so firmly to Ash because Ash sort of exists between dimensions. Everyone else from the main world are brighter versions of Janus's own life, and they mock him with their happiness. Everything in Thule is terrible and marked by Sebastian. Ash is the only thing Janus is able to love, because he's the only person Janus met as himself. Everybody else he either knew as Jace or he killed for Sebastian.

Ash also represents a very interesting sort of hope. Janus has basically only ever experienced suffering, other than the few years he lived with the Lightwoods (before watching them all die). In other words, he has no reason to believe he'll ever be happy. Seeing the other versions of himself and his friends thrive in the face of overwhelming opposition isn't comforting, because it's proof that Janus and Clary and Alec and Isabelle could have defeated Sebastian. It's proof that they failed, and it's painful to see others who are just as unworthy as they were get a happy ending anyways. Ash, on the other hand, is proof that something new and wonderful can come after pain. Janus can believe that Ash might one day have a better life, because he's not from Thule. Janus can fight to defend Ash without feeling like a traitor to his own world, because Ash isn't the bright reflection of Janus's personal tragedy. They are two people displaced in reality, and even if Janus has no chance of becoming Jace again he believes that Ash can become someone entirely new and entirely free. Free from how badly it all went in Thule, and free from knowing how well it could have gone.

In relation to the "would Neil call Andrew "Drew"" post going around, here is my opinion no one asked for :)

Personally, I can't really see it. For one, it just doesn't fit Neil's character in my opinion. Like I can't see him really giving ANYONE a nick name, much less Andrew. Secondly, I think names are very important to Neil (for kinda obvious reasons), like almost sacred, so why would he call Andrew anything other than his name? He had to fight so hard for his identity, and I feel like names hold a different kind of weight to him, so he's not out here changing people's names.

one thing about neil is that he's extremely calculated and genuinely does not give a fuck about 90% of people. and the 10% of people he Does care about he's still willing to manipulate and use for what he views as the best outcome (re: breaking a bone to heal it properly) and i think there's an instinct to downplay this so that neil can be the softer/less intense/emotional one to andrew's uncaring/intense/harsh demeanor bcus there's an obsession in our culture with opposites attract (re: heteronormativity) but it does their dynamic a huge disservice to ignore the Basis of andreil. which is the understanding they have of each other + their reasons + their reactions and how extremely similar they are.

So I wanna talk about the fact that I actually hate Nora because why did she have the only outed queer character and only known person of color (that Neil actually mentions) assault Neil. That’s wild to me. And we don’t accept what happens to Andrew or Jean but how come we do with neil. Why is Neil expected to forgive Nicky for what he did at Eden’s that’s just insane to me especially when she didn’t even need to add that into the book in the first place . I felt like when she was writing for the first three books she just wanted everyone assaulted for some damn reason. Because why did Andrew get assaulted twice in a row and no breaks when both of those times they didn’t at all need to happen and no one can change my mind on that.

Also why is it so normalized that Kevin and Thea are together. She was 18 and Kevin was 14 when they first did it together and started dating and hanging out around this time too. That’s fucking insane. Why did she write all of that.

And don’t even get me started on what she did to Jean.

I consider these characters mine and my babies and they did not deserve that poor writing idc.

In general her writing is repetitive in the way she hurt the characters. All from abusive homes. Money issues. SA. There're other ways to give a character personality- and no, making them gay is not a personality either.

Ik this is unpopular but I HATE the whole “Neil and Katelyn look alike” thing this fandom has going on. Obviously headcanon however u like this is my personal opinion. I just think that Katelyn should be able to stand alone as a character without making her essentially Neil’s counterpart

I’m going to keep ranting because Katelyn is NOT the female version of Neil and I’ve developed a newfound love for her and Aaron. There is very little similarities between them. You can argue appearances but that’s only because we don’t know what Katelyn even looks like. But personality wise she is nothing like him and I think that’s the whole basis of what bothers me. I think she should be able to shine as a character without that being the basis of her personality in fics.

I have a little theory: the reason hardly anyone talks about this in depth is that the vast majority of the fandom prefers to see Neil as someone submissive or weak who needs Andrew to survive.

Idk if it’s just me but I kind of hate most of the Neil Josten roasts I see people make up. Not because they’re bad writers or anything but because most of the people writing seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of why he says the things he does and when
