Helena Almeida, Study for Inner Improvement, 1977.

For Study for Inner Improvement (1977), a sequence of photographs in which Almeida looks like she is eating blue paint. There is no question that the colour she is consuming is very similar to that of Yves Klein. She had in the past protested at Klein’s use of women as objects in his artworks. At the time of making Study for Inner Improvement, the concept of anthropophagy (cultural cannibalism, the idea of consuming other cultures as a way of asserting independence) was a popular ideology. Almeida’s chewing up of Klein’s blue, a colour he had come to dominate, was a liberating act for women and artists everywhere.

Adorable Polar Bear Plays in Flower Fields

Canadian photographer Dennis Fast took advantage of his stay at the Canadian lodge Churchill Wild in Manitoba to capture this rare sight. Popularly known for its proximity to polar bears, Fast took snapshots of an adorable polar bear playing among the fireweed field. The bear is seen rolling among the lush field, as well as eating some of the stunning plants.

Polar bears are known to be one his favorite subjects, which he captures on ground level, unlike other photographers.His main objective as an artist is to capture wildlife sceneries and adventures, which are rarely experienced by others.

Amazonian Women March on International Womens Day 2016

On #InternationalWomensDay women from 7 different Amazonian Indigenous Nations began a march in Ecuador against new oil blocks in the rainforest. They call on their government and the international community to respect their rights: “We stand for our families our planet and the rights of nature!” “They want to criminalize me for defending my territory.” “Don’t threaten the rights of Indigenous women, uncontacted peoples and activists!” “We women are at the front, demanding that they respect our Indigenous rights, our territory, and our rainforest.” At the very same time, Chinese oil company Andes Petroleum began to enter the Sápara territory in violation of their rights. Sápara representatives are now delivering a formal protest letter in response to this illegal entry onto their lands. Please support these women fighting for the survival of their culture and the protection of the Amazon rainforest. Call the embassy of China and tell them to stay out of Sápara territory. In the mid 1970s, Jannis Kounellis began creating installations that consist of pieces of statuary stacked in doorways or on tables and shelves to represent a breakdown of cultural coherence. Untitled evokes the fragmented state of post-World War II Europe.

For the Patriarchy Is Dark and Full of Errors

Margreth Olin is one of my favorite filmmakers, ever since she was revealed to me by one of the most beautiful films I saw this year, Engelen (The Angel, 2009). Dei mjuke hendene (In The House of Angels, 1998) is another proof of M. Olin’s subtle and poignant documentary filmmaking mastery, and it made my heart flutter in all kinds of ways—from sadness to laughter to tenderness. Then came Kroppen Min (My Body, 2003), which I watched tightly fitted in a sofa with contributors extraordinaire Anna Dovre and Kristina P. Madness and witchery… are conditions commonly associated with the use of the female voice in public, in ancient as well as modern contexts. Consider how many female celebrities of classical mythology, literature and cult make themselves objectionable by the way they use their voice. For example there is the heartchilling groan of the Gorgon, whose name is derived from a Sanskrit word garg meaning “a guttural animal howl that issues as a great wind from the back of the throat through a hugely distended mouth.” There are the Furies whose highpitched and horrendous voices are compared by Aiskhylos to howling dogs or sounds of people being tortured in hell. There is the deadly voice of the Sirens and the dangerous ventriloquism of Helen and the incredible babbling of Kassandra and the fearsome hullabaloo of Artemis as she charges through the woods. There is the seductive discourse of Aphrodite which is so concrete an aspect of her power that she can wear it on her belt as a physical object or lend it to other women. There is the old woman of Eleusinian legend Iambe who shrieks and throws her skirt up over her head to expose her genitalia. There is the haunting garrulity of the nymph Echo (daughter of Iambe in Athenian legend) who is described by Sophokles as “the girl with no door on her mouth.” Putting a door on the female mouth as been an important project of patriarchal culture from antiquity to present day. Its chief tactic is an ideological association of female sound with monstrosity, disorder and death.
