Hi! I loved your "Drifting Together" series a lot and i wanted to ask if i could bookbind it? It's for my personal use, just would've loved to have a physical version of it on my shelf!

I bound copies of them a few years ago for myself. I'd offer you a copy of the typeset files, but they were very much baby's first typesets and if you've any experience you could probably do better 🙈

as a writer you will have a specific deck of vocab words you like using a lot and when you read other peoples' work you will see a very clear spread of different vocab words on their end. this is why you need to read, to collect other writers' words like it's a card game

the thing about astarion is that i do think that he is COMICALLY his own worst enemy but i also recognize that the reason for that is that he hit a sharp genre shift at 100000 mph. one second you're the hot and kinda tragic but expendable minion of a d&d boss and the next you're the romancable companion in the party. this little man was built to have his lore discovered in a notebook while looting his corpse after you've killed cazador and all the sudden everyone's like hey astarion. do you want to sit by the fire and tell us about yourself :) we all like you and want you happy :) and he's like what the fuuuuck. what the fuuuuuuuuuuuckkkkkk????

however i do still find him funny about it, sorry man

I've run into confusion about what can be posted on AO3 in the past -- especially in the form of people saying that original work or fandom stats are inappropriate for the archive. This blog post contains the following helpful rundown (bolding is mine):

AO3 is an archive for fanworks, not other kinds of content. AO3 has a very specific purpose: to host fanworks, and only fanworks. Our definition of “fanwork” is broad: fanworks can take many shapes and forms, including fanfiction, fanart, podfics, fanvids, fancrafts, fannish non-fiction, original works that use fannish tropes, and more. AO3 was designed by and for fans to be a place where fanworks like these could be safely preserved and shared. We will not expand our mission or services to host non-fanwork content. What are some examples of non-fanworks? Works that are not fanworks should not be posted to AO3. These include (but are not limited to): Fic searches or requests for recommendations Advertisements for roleplay partners or servers Personal messages to other users Updates, polls, or announcements Reaction, blog, or vent posts Spam, shitposts, or memes Reposted novels or other published works Placeholders and other empty works Links to or lists of works you’ve read or created Ideas or prompts for fanworks Requests for other users to provide you with ideas or prompts for fanworks

Fandom stats (and other fandom research and data analysis) falls under "fannish non-fiction." Original works that have fannish tropes are also okay.

The whole blog post is useful -- it also shares alternate tools available for some of those non-fanwork purposes like prompting. And it gives guidance on how to most helpfully report non-fanworks without overwhelming the reviewers. Thank you, Policy & Abuse volunteers!

Guide on Typesetting Fics with Scribus

I was recently inspired to try binding my fanfiction by @armoredsuperheavy​‘s guide How to Make a Book. But there was a big roadblock there - I run Linux and don’t have access to Word.

So I spent some time teaching myself how to use the open-source desktop publishing program Scribus.

I was pretty happy with the end result (see below), so I’ve now made an instructional guide for anyone else who wants to typeset a AO3 document for bookbinding using Scribus!

A mere 2 ½ years later I have updated the guide to match Scribus versions 1.5! Also includes new stuff: colors! table of content creation! splitting text frames! a simpler web-based imposition program!

The old version has been retained for any folks using 1.3 versions of Scribus :)

I can't believe I made that original guide back in 2020. Anyway, it's 2025 now and I have made a new and improved version (the link is still the same). Now including:

I think a lot of people are forgetting that on tumblr fandom used to be practiced very differently. now everyone fucks off to their discords or tumblr groups to discuss everything with a select few, making tags be nearly only used for posting some finished fanworks or not at all

a decade ago people didn't have tumblr groups. people didn't even have dms. if you wanted to talk to anyone about anything you had to make a post, or send an ask (which more often than not would get published and thereby become a post in the end too)

so next time you think "I have a fandom thought but I have to find a small group of hyperspecifically like-minded people to share it with in private" remember all the freaks you could be missing out on meeting by keeping the tags dead. use tags, make friends. fuck discord.

There have always been private fandom spaces. I’ve been in fandom for nearly 30 years. It was private invite-only mailing lists and chat rooms back then. And then there were public and private forum sites. And then there were public and private Livejournal communities. Etc etc. For as long as fandom has existed it has had public areas and private areas. That’s fine. That’s normal. Participate in one or the other or both. There is no “one way” to fandom. One day Tumblr and Discord will die or fade or shut down and then fandom will decamp to the next place. And the next. It’s not about the place: it’s about the people. Find your people. Fandom that centralises the place or the platform instead of the people is just another content mill that misses the fucking point.

Fandom communities are inherently transient. They come and they go. People slide in and out, people get loud and noisy, people lurk in the shadows. They leave comments, they leave kudos, they send DMs, they send asks, they post, they don’t post, they make rec lists, they use private bookmarks and read the same fic 8000 times without making a peep. They cling to old spaces and find new spaces. It’s all fucking fine.
