I have this running gripe with fantasy and sci-fi stories and their level of realism

If you have a fantasy/sci-fi story and you go “Yeah we’re not super concerned with realism, this is for fun,” I go “Great!” And I enjoy it

If you have a fantasy/sci-fi story and you go “We’re gonna try to make this as close to our understanding of reality as we can, here’s a detailed scientific explanation we came up with as to how magic works and how dragons breathe fire, here’s a fantasy set in a historical time period we researched and recreated in faithful detail by taking expert advice on every part of it, and here’s an alien species we researched the biology of and put together things that should work with just a little suspension of disbelief on both parts,” I go “Great!” And I enjoy it

If you go “This story is BASED IN REALITY and BASED IN SCIENCE AND HISTORY, specifically these disciplines and/or time periods” and then do a half-assed job of it?

You will get no quarter from me. I will tear your ass apart. I will call out the inaccuracies in the half-baked dish you’ve served up with polite but ruthless abandon. The middle of the road is where you get run over by a landspeeder, or perhaps a chariot pulled by dragons. As you will.
