What to do if you suddenly find yourself homeless

FOOD

Find your nearest food bank or mission, for food

grocery stores with free samples, bakeries + stores with day-old bread

different fast food outlets have cheaper food and will generally let you hang out for a while.

some dollar stores carry food like cans of beans or fruit

SHELTER

Sleeping at beaches during the day is a good way to avoid suspicion and harassment

sleep with your bag strapped to you, so someone can’t steal it

Some churches offer short term residence

Find your nearest homeless shelter

Look for places that are open to the public

A large dumpster near a wall can often be moved so that flipping up the lids creates an angled shelter to stay dry

HYGIENE

A membership to the YMCA is usually only 10$, which has a shower, and sometimes laundry machines and lockers.

Public libraries have bathrooms you can use

Dollar stores carry low-end soaps and deodorant etc.

Wet wipes are all purpose and a life saver

Local beaches, go for a quick swim

Some truck stops have showers you can pay for

Staying clean is the best way to prevent disease, and potentially get a job to get back on your feet

Pack 7 pairs of socks/undies, 2 outfits, and one hooded rain jacket

A Message to my Followers who are going to be impacted by Hurricane Florence.

This hurricane is dangerous.

Please, take it seriously.

It is not just a thunderstorm.

Take it from someone who went through Katrina and saw the damage a hurricane can do when it sits and builds.

It changes entire landscapes.

It kills.

Get gas now. The gas stations will begin to either run out, or put a limit to how much gas you can get. Get it now while you can, because I remember distinctly the way the abandoned cars looked on the highway while we were evacuating.

Once that storm hits, the gas stations will shut down. There will be no gas for a week, at least.

You will be stuck in bumper to bumper traffic. Make sure your car is in good working order. The amount of cars left behind on the highway is astounding.

Bring your pets in case of flooding, don’t leave them behind or in a shelter.

Take a picture of every single thing in your house the way it is. Ever dresser. Everything. If it floods, this will help with the insurance.

Power will be out for a week, possibly more. Take anything that will spoil, eat it now/bring it with you/throw it out. You don’t want to come back to a house that is 80°+ inside with spoiled food. It smells disgusting. I know from first hand experience.

Pack as much clothes + whatever else you need as you can. You don’t know what you will be returning to, if anything at all. I hate to say it, but there were so many homes lost in Katrina in mg area to flooding & I didn’t even live in the Soup Bowl.

From what I’ve seen, the outer bands are strengthening. They’re red at this point. This hurricane is getting stronger, and it’s well built. There are no winds to tear it apart. It’s eye is holding together, and that’s terrifying. A well built storm like this one can ruin lives. It’s not a joke.

Please, please stay safe. Evacuate ASAP if you’re in the direct line.

Don’t wait until it is here. That is how you get killed. Do not evacuate in the middle of it. Don’t wait until last minute.

It is always better to be safe than sorry.

Please stay safe.

Listen to the news. Follow their advice.

Leave while you still can, before the highways get clogged up. Go as far in-land as you can. Leave the state entirely if you have to.

We did. And we still felt the effects of Katrina.

Yeah of course. And be forewarned I have barely read any books by men (or about men lmao) in YEARS so this list is WOC heavy with a few notable exceptions.

Alexander Chee (I didn’t personally love Queen of the Night but I know other people did, and I’m trying really hard to get my hands on his collection of essays, How To Write an Autobiographical Novel)

I know we’re all collectively over Junot Díaz for extremely valid reasons but, This is How You Lose Her put my heart back together when it was shattered into a bazillion pieces in the summer of 2014. I don’t exactly feel right consuming art by abusive men, and feel guilty doing so, even if the emotional impact of the work manifested itself before the allegations of abuse came out, but also, I can’t let go of this particular book even if I can easily give up works by Woody Allen or Kevin Spacey or Louis C.K. and their ilk mostly because I never had any emotional attachment to them in the first place. 

On a similar vein, Sherman Alexei (The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is one of the only books with a male protagonist I genuinely loved growing up and I know there are allegations against Alexei floating around as well but this book changed my life when I was 14 so maybe I have to come to terms with the fact I am not immune to the separation of art from the artist. Moving on though.

Chimimanda Ngozi Adichie (We all know I adore Americanah)

Zadie Smith (aka the smartest, most beautiful woman in the world. Or at least one of them)

Helen Hoang (The Kiss Quotient was absolutely adorable and far better than The Wedding Date imo)

Roxane Gay (Bad Feminist was formative even if I barely got through Hunger because it was triggering on so many levels to me)

Toni Morrison (Beloved was like… terrifying but also much needed for me)

Octavia Butler (the queen of sci-fi)

Zora Neale Hurston (Their Eyes Were Watching God was once again, formative in my journey to self-actualization that was at its most perilous around my senior year of high school when I read this book)

Alice Walker (do me a favor and read The Color Purple sooner rather than later)

Sandra Cisneros (all I have to say is “I am without shame” and you might learn to be as well after reading Ciseneros’ work)

Khaled Hosseini (I’m the minority who liked A Thousand Splendid Suns more than The Kite Runner since the former absolutely traumatized me in the way the latter didn’t although that also could be because I entirely skipped over the rape scene in TKR)

Tomi Adeyemi (Children of Blood and Bone is absolutely AMAZING and Adeyemi deserves all the hype and success she’s getting)

Marjane Satrapi (I watched Persepolis before I read it back in the 10th grade and what was initially so astounding to me was how hope could exist in the darkest of times not to mention the enduring power of humanity in times of strife)

Jhumpa Lahiri (obviously)

Helen Oyeyemi (White is for Witching changed my life tbh)

Arundhati Roy (I want to BE her when I’m older and that’s not even an exaggeration. She’s so articulate and simply exudes intelligence and empathy in everything she writes, even when it’s criticism or even a downright provocative condemnation)

Audre Lorde (not that I agree with everything she says but she is still imperative to study and learn from)

Morgan Parker (There Are Things More Beautiful Than Beyoncé was profound and brilliant and I shouldn’t have been surprised but I still was. Goes to show how wrong I can be sometimes)

Warsan Shire (Beyoncé sampled her poetry in Lemonade but I’ve been a fan her work since she had a Tumblr and I’d recommend you join the trend and read her work as well)

Yaa Gyasi (I wasn’t expecting to love Homegoing as much as I did but first impressions are often wrong)

Maya Angelou (a real no-brainer but somehow it took me this long to think of her)

James Baldwin (someday, I will be as strong as James Baldwin but that day is not today. Until then though, I will read and reread Notes From a Native Son)
