Recommending some of my favorite non-English movies with beautiful visuals:
Farewell my Concubine (1996) 🇨🇳
The doomed relationship between a beautiful male China opera actor who is forced into a feminine role and his fellow star. Set against a backdrop of regime changes from the Republic Era, Japanese occupation to the modern PRC.
Gabbeh (1998) 🇮🇷 🇹🇯
Named after a type of Persian rug- the art form through which we experience a girl’s life, from her family’s nomadic culture to her romance and marriage.
The Silence (1996) 🇮🇷 🇹🇯
A blind boy who repairs instruments sees the world through music. Explores concepts of Sufism (Islamic mysticism) as seen in Rumi’s poetry. (Same director as above)
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring(2003)🇰🇷
A young monk lives with his elderly master in a floating temple on a lake. We follow the seasons of his life, told via Buddhist symbolism and philosophy.
Death of a Beauty/ 美人之死 (1986) 🇨🇳
Based on an Uyghur folktale. A woman who was once renowned for her beauty now lives in an old castle, hiding her burned face even as the prince who loves her searches for her.
On the Silver Globe 🇵🇱
Surreal sci-fi film about space travelers who crash on a primitive planet, starting a religion among the inhabitants as divine figures even as they long for the heaven that is old earth. A ‘parody’ of the origins of the Abrahamic faiths(?)
Hey, don’t cry. Free online database of Japanese folk lore
Might I add, free database of mostly European folklore and myths
A Book of Creatures by @a-book-of-creatures doesn't update these days but is another thing along these lines, really huge, fully illustrated all by the author and cites all sources
Free database of Native American folklore, sorted by tribe.
“Do Dead Malls Go To Heaven?”
Experimented a bit with a new way of detailing the tiles. Kinda like it? This particular piece took a hell of a lot of work. I’d love if you shared the vibes it’s giving off, for research purposes 💖
love that picture of shelley duvall where she looks like a jojo character
my little cousin confidently declared that mother nature had a counterpart named daddy electric and i feel like this concept needs to be explored
Daddy Electric and Mother Nature sounds like a cute 70s act
Let’s say you wanted to glue fabric to wood, but what do you use? What about glass to paper? This to That lets you choose two things you want to glue and lists what types of glue is best. (Because people have a need to glue things to other things!)
This is an incredibly awesome site. Go check it out!
Whhhhaaaaaattt!???
EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS
This is one of the first websites I was told about in props. It also has information about the toxicity, adhere time, price, and other stuff about the glues.
Useful for cosplayers and DIY!
I feel personally attacked.
[replacement for first link, which wasn’t working]
I went through the whole thing just to see what it said for each combination.
So I saw a photo of this hexagon tile floor . . .
The blurb said the shot was taken in Granada, Spain, by Agneta Fondén. No other info, so I have no idea how old, etc. There's a game (from 1988) that uses a similar pattern on one of its pieces, but this could predate it by at least a thousand years — or not. But the pattern intrigued me, so I made a texture map and used Blender's geometry nodes (no generative AI) to set up a hexagon grid with random rotations for the tiles:
That's all done with a single design:
You'd think this would have a name, right? (For its historical use as an architectural / decor tile — although I've found out more about its use in games, that's not what I'm looking for.) Like the Penroses do (and no, it's not one of those). But I've had no luck finding it, or any other info. Any (human only, please) help?
