Dream Job

Not that you care, but I just talked about how the past ten years of my life have been entirely devoted to figure skating and now I'd like to explain how all my hard work has finally paid off (literally).  A couple months ago I started this blog so I could share my experiences during my new job and now I can tell people what it is that I'm doing.  During the spring I created a "skating resume" which consisted of several videos of my skating and documents that detailed all of my athletic accomplishments, in hopes of getting a skating oriented job, and ... it worked.  I am part of an incredible show with Feld Entertainment.  This company is responsible for creating several different "Disney on Ice" shows that travel around the world and I am part of one of the shows.  When I was in Florida, I was learning the show and now that the show is ready I am in California and we open tomorrow!!!  I am so excited to get to skate in front of huge crowds and see all the little children in the audience smiling as they see their favourite Disney stories brought to life on ice.  I know this is going to be an incredible experience and I can't wait to share it with you.

My Journey

Not that you care, but I thought I'd tell you a little story about how far I've come in my life so far.  So, I have been a dedicated athlete for almost eleven years now and I have finally decided to get a job where I can use my athletic ability to my advantage.  

Ten years ago, (I was ten) I was out on an outdoor skating rink with my family.  My brother and dad were playing a little stick and puck, but I was determined to jump off the ice, land on the snowbank (used instead of proper boards, Canada) and land back on the ice.  My mom noticed me doing this and decided to sign me up for figure skating lessons.  The first day I fell flat on my face and she was so worried she spent all this money for lessons and I had decided I hated it.  To her surprise, when I got off the ice I told her I couldn't wait to come back and I've enjoyed it ever since.  Over my skating career I have competed across the country, competing at three National Championships and meeting so many interesting people.  Of course I always dreamed on skating at the Olympics, but now that I'm older I've learned that skating has so much more to offer than just competitions.

Update

I am not myself these days

Not that you care, but I flew through this book because it is unlike anything I have ever read before.  I am not myself these days by Josh Kilmer-Purcell is a brilliant book.  I heard about it by watching a YouTube video of Tyler Oakley.  He had previously discussed John Green's recent publication, The Fault in Our Stars, which I really enjoyed so I trusted Tyler's judgement (as if we are best friends or something).  TYLER WAS RIGHT.  Josh's memoir is so hilariously funny and incredibly moving.  He describes his final year as a drag queen named Aqua, she wears plastic bowls as breasts and keeps goldfish in them.  As he tries to balance his day job (working at an ad agency), nightlife (Aqua) and a male escort for a boyfriend Josh realizes that life, much like the shows he performs in, must go on and somethings have to be let behind.  Obviously not the average story, but absolutely worth the read - especially since it's about someone's real life.  I was unable to find it at any bookstore so I had to order it online and I highly recommend getting it (so does Tyler, I presume).

Five Days

Not that you care, but I have five more days left before I pack up my life and fly to Florida to start my new job.  I've become to feel comfortable living at home again that I am a little torn up about leaving.  However, I know I will enjoy the freedoms that come with living on your own, even though I will be working most of the time (I'm sure I'll find some 'me' time).  Looking back on my previous years a lot of the stuff that took place was really up in the air for a while.  Certain events had to take place according to plan before future events could happen, but now it's going to be so different.  Once I get to Florida I will know exactly where the tour will be going and I will always know when I will be somewhere new.  I am definitely looking forward to a schedule.  Sometimes life needs to be spontaneous, but when you know that every week you'll be in a new city, meeting new people and seeing the world, it's nice to know that it didn't happen by chance.  I worked hard to get this job and I am going to make sure I enjoy every minute of it.  I hope you'll come along for the ride (I'll post photos once I start working).

My Book 3.0

Not that you care, but a while ago I posted the introduction to my book and tonight I've decided to post the third paragraph.  Today also marks the end of my daily blogging for the month of August.  I don't think I'll be writing as much in September because of my new job, but I will hopefully be able to post pictures as well as text.  Enjoy the paragraph...

“Let me guess, you want to know what traumatic experience Chris went through to make him view the world with an incredibly positive outlook.  Well, it's not my secret to tell, but when Chris was a young boy he ... No, I can't, sorry.  The truth is, without that traumatic event I'm not sure that Chris would be the same man he is today.  Unfortunately, life is going to be unpleasant and the only way to get over that is to accept it.  If you are one of the 'lucky' few who has experienced something horrible then you have the opopportunity to turn your life around.  I guess you could call that, 'seeing the silver lining' or some shit, but whatever keeps you from taking that final step off of that building is all that matters.  I guess if you think about it, that short burst of lethal pain radiating through your body as you take your final breaths and everything good inside of you seeps out in a pool of red might not be as bad as living an entire life of hating every molecule that makes up your pathetic being. But, there isn't exactly somebody available to ask, so how do you know it's all worth it.  Sooner or later your body will shut down and you'll be forced to go to the same place that you would've ended up in if you'd just 'done it yourself' and maybe then you wouldn't have lived through anymore terrible experiences or had to dwell on your past.  Sure, people will tell you to keep your head up and that, I love this one, 'the sun'll come out tomorrow!' Uhhh, no shit! The sun comes out everyday that's why we're alive, it just sometimes gets stuck behind huge pile of suck or clouds if you can't grasp my metaphor of the sun being good things that happen in life and the clouds being every tiny bad feeling and experience that get in the way.  It's funny, because the clouds are a lot closer to us than the sun and there is only one sun, even though it is a star, but some days there can be so many clouds, like too many.  I guess that's the day to jump.  The day when there are so many 'clouds' that the darkness feels like its taking over and the 'sun' hasn't been seen for days, that's when you jump.  For me, those days aren't even the hardest.  It's actually when the 'sun' has been shining for almost too many days and pretty soon some terrible shit is going to start happening and then it'll be thunder and lightning with no sign of the sun for weeks.  It's those days, when life seems so great that I know it's going to begin its downward spiral into suckage, that I should get out while I'm still ahead.  The only problem is, like most people, I wait to see if the next day can get that millimeter better or that one degree warmer than the last and I end up waiting too long. Opportunity lost, challenged denied, better luck next time.

August Likes

Not that you care, but at the end of July I wrote about everything I enjoyed last month, from books to music and I thought I'd do it again for August.  I didn't indulge in that many new things this month so I won't have as much to recommend, but I hope the stuff I mention interested some of you (if any).  Enjoy...

Books

1. On The Road by Jack Kerouac - I finally finished this book and it took me a while.  I have to say that the book is extremely well written and I really enjoyed it.  However, there are five parts to the book and relatively the same thing happens in all five parts.  The narrator decides to take a trip somewhere and his crazy friend ends up making the trip more interesting, but then they lose all their money or piss off everyone else travelling with them.  All in all, I can understand why this book is still being read, because the story itself (although repetitive) is very good and the writing, especially the ending, is incredible.

2. Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green & David Levithan - I have never read a book that is anything like this one. The odd numbered chapters are written by John Green and focus on the narrator Will Grayson who is best friends with a gigantic (as in he is big-boned) homosexual football player who writes musicals.  Meanwhile, Levithan writes the even numbered chapters that focus on a character, also named Will Grayson, who is slowly coming to realize something about himself.  Somehow (I don't want to spoil it), the two Will's meet and their lives become part of something even bigger.  I highly recommend this book.

Music

1. Misha B - this girl was a contestant of the British version of The X Factor a couple years ago and has been slowly releasing music ever since.  This song ...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYx4YHXN4Ig... is one that I think is completely underrated and was one of my summer songs.  I think she deserves a listen, so if you have a couple minutes, go check her out.

2. TV Shows

1. Happy Endings - I am so bummed this show is no longer on the air.  I loved this show the moment it first premiered three years ago and I have tuned in every week to see Jane, Dave, Brad, Penny, Max and Alex discuss their plans for the week.  Alex and Jane are sisters.  Jane is married to Brad.  Brad is best friends with Max.  Max and Penny dated until Max came out.  Alex left Dave at the alter for a guy on roller-blades.  I haven't watched an episode for a while now, but it is definitely one of my favourite shows and if you haven't seen it yet, WATCH IT.  I will definitely be watching an episode tonight.

2. The Mindy Project - I will admit that when this show first came on I wasn't interested, but I watched the season finale one night and am now a huge fan.  Mindy Kaling is definitely an up and comer in the comedy world and I really hope the second season is as good as the first.  Mindy plays a doctor searching for love in New York and has to deal with many different problems as she tries to work full time and find 'Mr. Right'.

Movies

1. I Give It A Year - I watched this movie a couple days ago with the rest of my family and it is full of British comedy.  I found it to be absolutely hilarious and extremely awkward at the same time.  The movie focuses around a couple who recently got married and no one thinks they can last more than a year together (hence the title) and eventually they both find their true 'better halves', but can't be with them because they are married to someone.  Basically, comedy ensues and I have to say that they perfectly cast almost all the rolls for this film.  The actors did a really good job with this unusual concept (I say unusual because of the outcome of the movie.  It's one of those, 'it only happens in a movie' ending).

2. Pacific Rim - I fucking loved this movie.  Guillermo del Toro made an action movie that offers everything a movie goer needs to be entertained for the entire film.  There are these giant alien monsters from another world called Kaiju who come through a portal at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean to destroy our planet.  To defeat them, we build giant robots, tricked out with awesome weaponry, called Jaegers.  The whole movie is filled with these battles between monsters and robots.  It has been described as Power Rangers for adults (I don't remember who said that) and I don't really see why that would be a negative.  To top off the entire film Charlie Day, from "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia", plays a crazed scientist who is in awe of the Kaiju.  I definitely want to see this movie again, and again...

I hope you had a good month and enjoyed some of the same stuff I did.

Beautiful Girls

Not that you care, but I don't think girls understand how beautiful they are.  I've never been the guy who calls a girl, 'hot' or 'fine' because 1. those words are extremely short and I was taught that you don't describe people using small words and 2. I don't think girls appreciate being categorized with weather or furniture (last I checked guys don't want to sit on women, I think it's the other way around).  I believe a women should always be called, 'beautiful' instead of 'sexy', 'gorgeous' rather than 'cute' and 'amazing' instead of 'bangable'. I find it's ridiculous how much attention gets put on women having to have flawless appearances every second of every day.  I respect all women, but the girls who can walk out of their home feeling confident without hiding behind designer clothes and painted on faces deserve more attention.  There are numerous reasons why women will continue to get dressed up to impress others (or just for fun, because girls tend to look nice for themselves too), but I just wanted to tell girls that it's important that people see you, not just look at you.

Alzheimer's

Not that you care, but today I went to see my grandfather with my family.  He has Alzheimer's.  It is extremely scary to think that the next time I go to see him, he may not remember who I am.  That is why I make a point of telling him everything I'm going to be doing and what I've done recently.  The best part of the visits is when my papa (that's what I call him) reminds me what I've been up to, because I know he has a lot of trouble with his short term memory.  I truly hope a cure can be created for cancer and AIDS, but I also desperately want my old papa back.  He looks the same, but it isn't him - not on the inside at least - it's like I'm talking to his shell, desperately trying to connect with the part of him that's lost inside.  I know that my grandfather is still there, but it's really difficult to see him struggle because it isn't a physical pain, but a mental inability to access memories.  I can't imagine not being able to remember something and I can tell how frustrating it is for him, because he tries so hard to remember and when he manages to I feel so thrilled.  Alzheimer's will always be a battle for my grandfather, and everyone else who has to struggle with it, but my papa  has so many people who care about him and we will always be at his side.

Bad Habits

Not that you care, but yesterday I wrote about my pet peeves and now I'm going to share some of my bad habits.  I guess one of my worst bad habits is not worrying about what other people have planned.  I only do this to my family, because they can handle it, but basically I will take my time getting ready to go somewhere, unless the place we are going has something that I am interested in.  Another bad habit I have is never finishing something when I start it.  I often begin a task in hopes of it turning into something magical and then giving up when it stops being interesting or working out the way I'd planned.  Hopefully I can break this habit by accomplishing my goal of daily blogging the entire month of August (almost done).  Also, a bad habit that encourages me not to finish what I've started is procrastination.  I will (as mentioned before) watch entire TV shows in a day to avoid school work or other important activities like interacting with other humans.  One bad habit, that I consider bad, is sleeping in.  I hate waking up late in the morning, because I feel like I when I wake up early I have time for a run or swim before starting my day.  There is something about my bed that keeps me in it until nine o'clock most morning though, at least it's the summer.  My last bad habit is wasting other people's time.  I often feel like I am the most important person in the world and that everyone should pay attention to me (for goodness sake, I started a blog).  Often times people will try and tell me what they are up to or feel like doing but I cut them off to talk about me.  Tomorrow my family and I are driving to a bigger city for the day so I am going to break two bad habits by getting up early and then being ready to go before they are.  I'll see how it goes.

Pet Peeves

Not that you care, but I thought I'd share my biggest pet peeves.  I know that I have a bunch of bad habits, but I thought that today I would discuss certain things people do that really annoy me.  The first one is hearing someone else chew.  I cannot stand eating food next to someone and all you hear is them chewing and swallowing.  I generally have to get up and leave to avoid complaining, but it has always bothered me - especially when the person doesn't close their mouth.  My second pet peeve has to be hearing people sing over top of someone else's song.  I am guilty of doing this, terribly, but I'm not complaining about being in a car with a group of people all belting out their favourite tune.  I mean when one person is quietly singing to a song I just want to listen to, but I can slightly make out their voice and it drives me nuts.  I try turning the music up, but then they sing louder, or I change the song and then they complain, "hey, I was singing to that." (yeah, I know).  The last thing that really annoys me is the fact that most people still don't wear belts.  I hate seeing guys with their pants falling so low down that I can see way too much.  I don't care if this pisses people off, but I fully blame Justin Bieber.  Yes, I am Canadian like him, but he needs to pull up his damn pants (it's cold up here).  I'm pretty sure if he wears a properly functioning belt, then girls will no longer find that look attractive and guys will start following suit.  Honestly, they are called underwear for a reason - they go 'under' what you 'wear'.  Don't worry, I know I sound like I'm complaining but I will write about my bad habits tomorrow.

1. What are you most looking forward to about 'Camp Takota'? I am really excited to how people who don't know about these three incredibly talented women react to the movie.  I hope that it is as good as I think it will be so these amazing ladies get even more recognition for their hilarity.

2. What do you think the best part of YouTube is? I think the best part of YouTube is its accessibility.  It is a free website where people can search for all kinds of different videos and so much great stuff has happened because of YouTube.  I feel like YouTube is the new entertainment industry.
