Raden Adjeng Kartini (1879-1904) is considered a national heroine in her home nation of Indonesia. She was a champion of women’s rights and education for girls in a time and place where her ideas were controversial.

She was put into seclusion at the age of 12, as was the custom to prepare young girls for married life; during this time she came in contact with European feminist ideals. She became educated to a high standard and started a correspondence with many prominent figures, asking for support in fighting ingrained attitudes towards women and helping them achieve their true potential. She died at only 25, but is remembered today with her own national holiday and several schools for girls named in her honour.
