2 days later, I have the 5 axis CNC working again. The $40 solid state relay broke the $1300 power supply, which broke the $1000 motor board, which broke the whole machine. On one side of understanding (non-chaotic) systems, everything is a mysterious black box. On the other side, it’s a clump of parts, all behaving exactly as they will. Glad to have had the chance to move toward the later.

3D printed concrete casting experiment. Now I just need a plant. A coat of cooking spray and the outside of the mold popped right off. The inner plug came out in pieces. Having the larger build area of the Lulzbot really helped this one. 26 hours printing and about $5 in plastic.

A few of my favorite beyond-the-basics tools, all $15 and under, and all with a great utility to volume ratio.  

Auto-locking vise-grips, precision screwdriver set, box-o-nuts and bolts, snap blade knife, awl for all, dental scraping tool, japanese saw, band clamp, E-6000 glue, 45lb fish scale, digital calipers, sharpwriter mechanical pencil, automatic center punch, and a stack of box cutters so there’s always one nearby

A quick and dirty prop megaphone I did on the CNC. It's tough rolling these shapes perfectly by hand, so I made it circular with the help of some wood rings and a zip tie. A fun CAD challenge to take on.

I am back in NYC now, designing and building scenery and such on this nimble giant. Doing this work continues to be a privilege.

a 3D scan and a source photo

Playing with 123D Catch to do 3D scanning and printing from photos.  Here's what has helped my captures:

Use even, soft lighting like exterior shade

Add lots of noise to the scene (marks and objects)

Every picture needs some background, or it won't count

Start with a ring of 20 straight-on pictures

Use exposure compensation, do test shots on light and dark areas

Nice cameras help, but aren't necessary (this is with a Galaxy S3)

No screws, no glue.  A sample puzzle table & drawer done on my old CNC machine.  I will be playing around with this concept more in the future.  Another one built from the 50 Digital Wood Joints pack.
