âReckless. Idiotic. Insubordinate.â RK900â˛s LED flickers red until he finally spits out, âStupid!â
Gavin has other shit to deal with. Like staying conscious and also ignoring how, up to thirty seconds ago, he thought he was going to bleed to death alone in this shitty alleyâwithout even catching the fucking perp who fucking shot him.
Fuck.
âIf you had waited for me to arrive as your backup, I would haveââÂ
Blah blah blah. Of course his partner would have caught the perp, because heâs sooo much better than him.
And he is. Nines really is better than him in every way: as a detective, as a partner, hell even as a person, and heâs still just a machine! God. At least a minute ago he could have just had his existential crisis and died about it, but now he has to live with the knowledge all he wanted in his presumably-dying moments wasâ
Wait.
âSsâthis real?â Gavin slurs, weakly slapping at Nines.
Or, trying to. His depth perception isnât so good right now. Probably because heâs been shot. Like, a lot. Good luck with that tourniquet, buddy, for the shit all that will do.
âYes, detective,â RK900 snaps back, actually sounding annoyed enough to be real. âYou really did chase after an armed suspect without backup and get shot multiple times in an alleyway.â
If this was just a dying fantasy, wouldnât he imagine Nines being all sappy and nice to him? Gavin tries to picture that.
Nahhhh. Heâd go out fantasizing about his mean ass bitch of a partner verbally stepping on him like always.
âNot real,â he insists.
âYes, real.â
âNuh uh.â
âI am only entertaining this asinine argument so that you will stay conscious.â
âYouâyour ass,â Gavin retorts.
RK900 displays the one single facial expression heâs managed to master without a social module and rolls his eyes. Too bad he isnât real. The real Nines wouldnât have let the perp get away.
âNuhh. Not ⌠real.â
âAre you dissociating?â Nines asks. âAre you traumatized? Detective? Detective, ARE YOU TRAUMATIZED?â
This is like a super shitty sitcom. One of those buddy cop shows, where everyone laughs at the android without a social module who doesnât realize that yelling directly in Gavinâs face is pretty fucking traumatizing all by itself you big blue-eyed bitch.
âReal-Nines, wouldaââ Gavin stops to cough. âWuhh. Woulda. Caught him.â
âStop speaking, detective. You are aggravating yourââ
âNot real!â
âSo I should have let you die?!â Nines shouts with the most emotion Gavinâs ever heard from him. âFuck that. Fuck you. You are my partner, and I would not let some irrelevant red wall prevent me from saving yourâsavingâyour st-stupid fucking life!â
Oh. His LED is still red. Has been? The whole time, red. Machine-RK900 wouldâve given like, one red swirl, maybe two. Assessing the situation. He wouldnât be stuck on it. He wouldnât stay in this shitty gross alleyway keeping pressure on gunshot wound to his stomach while the perp got away.
He wouldnât cry.
Gavin kisses him. Sort of. He canât really sit up much on his own, and Nines is so much fucking taller than him, that itâs more like he just slobbers on the androidâs chin, except then Nines actually kisses him back holy fuck but he is so, so bad at it. It feels like the dipshit is just headbutting his lips against Gavinâs lips and thatâs what he thinks kissing is, so heâs definitely got to stay alive to show this genius moron how to actually get some.
âMy very first emotion,â Nines says when he pulls back. âIs how goddamn furious I am with you. So shut up and stay still until the ambulance arrives.â
âYessssir,â Gavin mumbles. âKiss more?â
Nines blushes, a feature Gavin didnât even know he had. âOnly if you survive. Detective.â
He says the title in that special way only he can, which sounds exactly like âyou fucking moron.â
Gavin lays in his arms, waiting for the ambulance, and wonders if heâll say âboyfriendâ the same way.
