theres a huge issue with people using large online platforms where you could lose everything useful you post because you're entrusting your data to a third party which exists to make money. however i don't want to hear that conversation coming from someone who's not willing to also educate the people they're looking down at for using these services on alternatives AND who's willing to understand practicality
I keep seeing rightfully angry threads about putting good information on Discords and Fandom wikis etc etc instead of forums or your own personal website and it's always coming from tech savvy netizens with a good side serving of condescension. I agree with the sentiment, but you have to realize the average online person does NOT know how to make a site that doesn't rely on a third party because this kind of thing requires skills (coding a site or maintaining your own server are not easy) and/or money.
Fandom wiki is a great example. I've seen several threads of people pointing out how much the site sucks, with it's advertising, shitty interface and being bought by shady corporate - this is all true. None of these threads have ever been accompanied with an explanation on how to migrate Fandom wiki data to another platform, you're lucky if there is even mention of other platforms. Examples are given of video game wikis for massive franchises who run because of a dedicated team of nerds with web dev skills coded their own site. Do you think the average wiki team can afford this? if you want to campaign for a less corporate based online you have to understand educating people about the issue doesn't stop at calling out services you don't like on twitter
this recording was the first time i ever heard a theremin and i thought it was a human voice and got chills so bad i stopped what i was doing and listened again and again until i found this video and figured out how the sounds were created. reading this quote and hearing the flawless, building, gorgeous drama of this piece rly stuns me.
oh i had an album by her, never saw her perform though. this is… perhaps exactly what i expected.
It is extremely unsettling to listen to a theremin. Clara Rockmore is the only person ever to have really played one well. Left hand is tone, right is volume, watch how she moves. It’s fascinating!

Reddening now as he gets drunk
And his curls and the splendor of his beauty

*Jewishifies all your alt fashion styles*
I always get very disappointed when I’m trying to find any kind of alternative fashion thing to wear, and have to wade through a sea of Xtian imagery and crosses. (Especially in looking for anything remotely goth.) It’s kinda made me think a lot about what it would look like for people to make alt fashion in various styles inspired by other cultures/religions that aren’t really represented. So here’s a Jewish lolita.
Happiness is the ability to say: I lived for certain values and acted on them. I was part of a family, embracing it and being embraced by it. I was part of a community …I asked what I could contribute.

man. remember early in the pandemic, shortly into the telework phase, when a lot of women started vocalizing “wow, i didnt realize just how much time, energy, and even money i was wasting on dolling myself up for work every damn morning, until i didn’t have to do it anymore. i don’t think i’ll go back to doing that when we return to the office? i won’t be a slob or anything, of course, i’m just not going to go out of my way to look pretty at work" and then,
so many people proceeded to lose every last crumb of their shit about it, writing the most asinine crybaby articles ever where they were just. utterly horrified by the possibility that more and more women might become comfortable looking natural/plain and completely opting out of the expectation to look as appealing as possible at all times, even when all they’re doing is spending all day in a cubicle. that was bonkers. lmao.
some ladies were like “during lockdown, i saw myself in the mirror without makeup much more often, and got used to it, so now i don’t feel as anxious for others to see me without makeup on either. i’m comfortable with the face i have, it’s fine just the way it is”
and some absolute dork ass losers heard this and went “truly, this is the death of femininity”
TERFS who think they’re welcome on my posts: you’re not. the freedom to reject conventional beauty standards should apply to and be shared with trans women as well, moreso, in fact, because trans women are literally held to an even harsher, stricter standard when it comes to rando third parties feeling entitled to meticulous over-performance from them - demanding they put every last possible ounce of resource and effort into altering their appearance just to be seen as acceptable, demanding they “prove” their validity through excessive glamour, to ensure they are not “faking” - and the consequences for a trans woman if she does not flawlessly comply with these demands can be so dire as to be lethal for her.
That should not be the reality these women have to endure! That is a horrifying injustice, and anybody who not only lacks compassion for that, but promotes the ideologies that enable it, is not welcome here. I will not debate with you on the matter. Get lost.
so this post is making the rounds again, but only the version without this very important addition on it, so, as a reminder,
idk if cis women are aware of this but u can actually talk abt how difficult it is to be a woman living under patriarchy without wildly misrepresenting the experiences of men living under the patriarchy. i’m watching a comedy special where a thin white woman just said that men aren’t affected by weight gain and i would like to know on what planet being a man protects you from the disgusting and deadly culture of fatphobia we’ve cultivated. i would like to know on what fucking planet a thin white woman is more affected by gaining an inch around her waist than a fat man having to deal with being dismissed by doctors, passed over for jobs, and treated horrendously by fellow human beings. like. trust me, i lived as a woman for almost three decades and still am seen as a woman, i understand the urge to vent about the patriarchy. but you can so easily do that without completely ignoring intersectionality or speaking on experiences you don’t understand or quite frankly don’t care about.
i rly think nothing encapsulates that attitude more than when certain ppl say that men don't understand what it's like to be afraid while walking alone at night...like what planet do you live on where that is true? what about bimoc, queer men, disabled and mentally ill men, unhoused men, religiously marginalised men, etc? and yes, sometimes it's women posing danger to these men.
literally cis white women will be like “men don’t understand what it’s like to be in danger!!!!!!” and it’s so wildly out of touch bc girl!!!!!! to some ppl U ARE THE DANGER!!!!!
Just gonna leave this article here cause its really good and goes into this in more detail

I literally only have one rule in my writing and it is this:
No matter what I put my characters through, they make it. They get to make it to the end of the story and have everything work out and be ok.
Because that’s the story I need. So it’s the kind I write.
If you want a piece of writing advice: write a story that is what you needed to hear at whatever age your target demographic is. I can guarantee you there’ll be someone out there who needs to hear it as much as you did. And maybe you’ll help them the same way someone else’s story did for you.
For some reason, this hit home and I never realized it that I did this for my stories too
To know that you made a difference, that in this all-too-brief span of years you lifted someone’s spirits, relieved someone’s poverty or loneliness, or brought a moment of grace or justice to the world…these are as close as we get to the meaningfulness of a life, and they are matters of everyday rather than heroic virtue.
