most of what I'm doing lately is human OCs, so I'm thinking about committing to an actual spec bio side project...
(these guys are people, to be clear. they will have clothes and language and society. it is just going to take me a bit to get there)
Old field notes from an amateur xenobiologist concerning commonly-spotted wildlife on a distant planet. Woodpicker: Small, myrmecophagous glider. Drills into tough plant matter and eusocial insect nests to access prey. Crest size and color seems to denote age. Sqrab: Large, solitary wading predator. Crustacean-like, convergent on Earth herons. Sensory tendrils/"heads" and respiratory "tail" capable of regeneration. Owolf: Social, coursing hexapodal predator. Groups seem to consist of family units. Exhibits centaurism, forelimbs used in grappling, feeding, and socialization. Complex body language signalling involving head crests, tail position, and the erectile filaments over the foreshoulders. Crepuscular, and vocal. Oddeer: Flighty mid-sized browser convergent on Earth ungulates. Keratin beak projecting from top jaw reminiscent of a horn, used in displays of dominance within a herd and in "jousting" matches, as well as serving as a signal of maturity and, rarely, a weapon against predation.
No one owes artists anything.
But existence is lonely and sometime you throw hours and hours of effort into a void, on the slim chance it will say something back.
