book theif —- eunae.
the library, in some way or another, is a brand of window shopping that gives both the fulfillment of acquiring what one wants while cutting out the con of spending money on it. it’s the best of both worlds in more ways than one; it’s heaven on earth for avid book lovers that can’t quite push themselves to purchase a book without being absolutely sure that it deserves a spot on a bookshelf back home.
eunae is, in simple terms, a library-loving menace.
if the library were to ever place her photo on the wall with a warning label dictating to deny service until all debts are paid, no one could blame them ─ the stack of books in her apartment, abducted and never returned to their home (’yet,’ she’d claim ─ after all, it’s still ‘borrowing’ if the intention to eventually give them back is still present, isn’t it?), attests to her crimes well enough. the responsibility of being a upstanding adult has yet to settle fully on her shoulders in this way ─ amusing, given what other pressures she is used to.
but that is besides the point. the point of today is to, once again, travel the aisle of books specializing in common magic, peering at titles as though she were hunting for her next victim.
(or, she would, had interruption not startled her slightly, pulling her from the focused bubble she’d slipped into.)
the accusation is a gentle-sounding one, but an accusation nonetheless ─ one that was correct in its assumption, even. eunae blinks slowly, mind putting together the most acceptable of responses before speaking.
“… no.” if it sounds like a lie, that’s simply because it is. “… they come back.” she adds a few moments later in a mumbled sort of defense.
jisoo’s eyebrows furrowed in thought, this had to be the girl that wasn’t returning the library’s books. her denial sounded convincing ( but jisoo was suspicious anyway ), and the girl’s defense labeled her with suspicion because it was clear that the books didn’t come back. it might’ve been a good lie to someone that didn’t work in the library and could, and had to, keep track of books coming in and out. and never had she seen the books that the girl claimed to have come back, actually come back.
‘ uh... ’ she thought about how to put her next accusation in the nicest way possible. after a few seconds, she finally said, ‘ the books don’t come back... so if you want to help your claim that you aren’t the one basically stealing our books, you have to try better than that. ’ the words came out a little harsher than she intended it to, and she realized this, letting out a soft sigh.
‘ i’m sorry, that was rude of me. but... ’ there was a reason why jisoo was getting slightly annoyed, ‘ the library is a place of knowledge, and most of the books we get here were donated or bought with the funds given to the library. ’ if the library lost all their books, she couldn’t imagine what would happen. no one would be able to go there to study or find books to help their studies, and all the money that went into the facility would’ve been basically a waste, ‘ so please give the books back. ’
