Cancer Doesn’t Like You When You’re 23
The day before Christmas Eve 2008 my 23 year old sister, Emy, was blindsided with a stage IV nasopharyngeal cancer diagnosis. The cancer is so rare, she had to go to NYC for treatment. I stayed with her in The America Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge while she underwent radiation and chemotherapy. We were the youngest people there. She battled courageously for 3 years while worst case scenario after worst case scenario played out. Despite this she still applied and was accepted to Grad School at the University of Texas for Social Work. During this time she also volunteered at a homeless shelter and worked as a medical translated for a low income health clinic. When she was sick she was pissed that she was to old for "Make a Wish". If she had the chance she was going to name her memoir "To young to die, to old for Make a Wish". She was such a badass! I'm trying honor to her memory by getting the pictures of her with the different bands she met signed. She has met members of Guns N Roses, Bon Jovi, Green Day, Blink 182, Motley Crue, Anthrax, Poison, Sum 41, Warrant, Sevendust, Everclear, New York Dolls, Train, and more. Please help anyway you can. My sadness is infinite but these missions have given me a way to connect with her. It has been so special to celebrate her life and share her story. Thanks.
