Can you imagine a world without sharks and whales? Or without beautiful fish who inhabit coral reefs? As we open app after app on our smartphones, we can’t help but click on certain news articles and personal posts containing sorrow and heartbreaking photos. Many of these articles are pertaining to the recent increase of our ocean pollution. Over the last several years the topic of trash pollution has constantly been the main point in people’s everyday conversations. Sadly, it is everywhere we look; whether that be at the beach or simply looking out your car window. The problem is a little bit different here in Hawaii. With tourism becoming more and more popular, more alarming rates of trash are being found at the beach. While a single college student may not be able to make legislative differences alone, many things can start around hawaiian college campuses that can make a huge impact locally. Plastic and cigarette butts are now threatening to take over hawaiian beaches not only harming us but the marine life as well.
