Barricading streets at protests is a vital safety measure as we’re increasingly having to deal with fascists (uniformed and otherwise) ramming their cars through crowds of people with intent to kill and getting away with it

In addition to the typical tactical considerations of course. Cops rely on their fancy equipment to overcome their vast numbers disadvantage, cutting off car traffic drastically reduces their ability to bring that equipment in, blocking major roads makes protests impossible to ignore, etc

How do you effectively barricade streets when you can’t easily carry around barriers?

Dumpsters, street signs, mailboxes, flipped cop cars, whatever happens to be around. Preferably set on fire. Smoke is denser than tear gas so it keeps any from reaching you, and flaming barricades are badass and intimidating as fuck

Hong Kong protesters have used bricks superglued to the road, that works too

Smoke also inhibits visibility, which is great when you can’t make a barrier that provides full visual cover. And few but the most heavily armored vehicles will drive through burning materials without knowing what’s in there.

Also: supermarket trolleys. If they’re all locked with one of those coin systems: even better. You got a full length barrier that just needs to be put in place, flipped over and chained to some lamp posts. Not very flammable but easy to dump flammable material in/on.

Of course you should never do any of this because it’s illegal.

Can you please not set anything on fire? Especially if its a public facility that doesn’t really belong to you? Vandalizing stuff like this gives protesters a bad name and also smoke is bad for the air.

I am going to say this as nicely as I can, but protesting isn’t meant to be fucking convenient. It’s not meant to be respectful. Protest in opposition to the state is mischaracterized and demonized by the state no matter how nonviolent it is. Vandalism wrecks stuff. Stuff is fucking replaceable. Lives fucking aren’t. By getting precious about vandalism and bad optics, you are helping the enemy.

This “pwease don’t set fires uwu” bullshit is fucking dangerous because it allows the enemy to divide us into “good” protesters and “bad” protesters, thereby 1) undermining solidarity and 2) reinforcing the legitimacy of state violence and the state’s monopoly on violence.

Also you know what’s bad for the air? Fucking teargas. Portland police have used so much CS gas over the past 5 months that it’s poisoning their water.

So maybe if you don’t like a comrade’s chosen tactic, just fucking choose a different tactic for yourself instead of trying to wag your finger

More to the point of barricades, a strategy to keep fash and cops from driving cars/trucks thru the blockade is to get large rocks and other debris tall enough to reach ur shin and very heavy and place them in a staggered formation infront of the barricade like so: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 put a about a foot of space in between the rocks and spread them as far as possible. You can also use T posts which look like this:

One last note that comes to mind: Double check what the places that you’re taking things from to barricade streets are. Buisnesses, apartment buildings, police stations etc. are great but make sure you arent taking from community organizations and homeless shelters, they are our comrades and we need to protect them and not make assholes of ourselves to them. of course this is for use in Fictional Writing Only and is Only to help Provide Realism to ones Fictional Book where characters are Building Barricades in modern cities and the practical and ethical dilemmas that said Characters in the Fiction Book might face in such situations. Definitley Do Not do any of these things irl against real cops and other fascists because that would be oh so illegal

another option is car brigade if you are trying to occupy a large street. you can surround on foot protestors on all sides with cars to protect them. note that this causes very slow mobility, usually best for if the disruption IS occupying that area and you anticipate specifically civilian or state vehicles to ram protestors down.

edit: also I would recommend that there be two people in each car. one to drive and one to communicate / hand out supplies!

not 100% sure of efficacy, but some protestors can also jump into the cars if police attempt to kettle

The tech industry saw to it. In a drive to both expand their market by making it easier to pick up tech without knowing how it works, and in an effort to lock down controllable walled gardens and ecosystems they could fully control and exploit, tech has continuously and systemically destroyed both the need for tech literacy and the avenues for developing it independently.

You are not supposed to know how your devices work. You are not supposed to modify them without paying a service fee, you are not supposed to add functionality to them unless they sell it to you, and you are DEFINITELY not supposed to repair or reuse them when they could make you replace them at full price.

Tech literacy didn't die, it was slowly strangled out of people.
