OOC: I imagine gotham's idea of etiquette is weird. Kids are still taught cursive and how to write a letter, but also not. It's formal with more cursing. Pickpockets say thank you while runnning away with your wallet. It's just weird

group projects in med engineering are actually fascinating because you get assigned four people and immediately learn who would survive a hostage situation

for example:

one guy vanished for two weeks and came back with “sorry i got stabbed” which unfortunately wasn’t a lie

one girl communicates exclusively through passive aggressive google doc comments

one dude keeps trying to add AI to our prosthetic design even though it does not need AI. nothing needs AI anymore. free us

and then there’s me. carrying the project like an injured donkey climbing a mountain

we met in the library tonight and somebody started crying over circuitry

not me, surprisingly

tim appeared halfway through with coffees like he was summoned by academic distress didn’t say hello just put an espresso next to my laptop and vanished back into the night

my group stared at me like i had a rich cryptid sugar daddy

honestly? fair assumption

anyway if this project kills me i expect Gotham University to engrave “she was right about the wiring” on my memorial plaque

Navigating life while being famous was always difficult, especially in Gotham. Going outside was a risk to either be swarmed by the leaches that call themselves paparazzi, or get held hostage by one whichever Villain of the week escaped lockup. No matter what, there were eyes on you at all times, nearly impossible to escape unless you knew what you were doing.

Fortunately, Alek knew exactly what he was doing.

Putting his hair up, sweats on, and a surgical mask covering his face, it was different enough from the designer suits, makeup, and hairstylists that he usually did that he could walk around the streets without anyone giving him a second glance at the billboards and magazines with his face on them.

Alek enjoyed these small moments of freedom, where he could almost imagine what it was like to just be a normal person. Almost. But maybe the young man got just a little too caught up in the what ifs, turning a corner too sharply and smacking right into another person, knocking him flat on his ass.

"Shit—" Alek let slip as his body hit the pavement, disorienting him for a second. "Crap—sorry about that, my fault, I wasn't paying attention. Are you alright?"

ody goes down with him, not dramatically, just badly—knees first, then a shoulder, a sharp little grunt she absolutely did not mean to make in public.

“fuck—” she blurts, then winces like the word itself pulled something. she stays where she is for half a second longer than necessary, palms flat on the pavement, doing a fast internal inventory. ribs complain. loudly. everything else files a grievance but nothing’s screaming.

she looks up at him, squinting past the mask, hair half-falling out of a messy tie, sweats that have seen better days. very un-celebrity-core.

“yeah. yeah, i’m—” she cuts herself off, pushes up onto one knee instead. slower this time. controlled. “i’m fine. you’re good. no lawsuits. tragic for us both.”

her gaze flicks over him quick and efficient, the way someone looks when they’re checking for damage instead of vibes. no blood. no weird angles. good.

then she snorts, breathy, more amused than annoyed.

“gotham sidewalks are built different,” she adds. “they yearn for violence.”

she gets to her feet at last, dusts off her hands, then pauses when she actually looks at him properly. something about him nags at the edge of her brain—familiar in a billboard way—but she doesn’t poke it. she’s tired. also not in the mood to meet a public figure today.

“you okay?” she asks back, reflexive. “didn’t smack your head or anything?”

a beat.

“…also nice reflexes. most people just scream and accept death.”

Alek let out a small breath of relief when the person he had ungracefully collided into said that they were fine, though resisted the urge to snort at the mention of a lawsuit. He'd pay for damages, but he doubted that she would win if this went to court.

"Mm, true. It probably stuck out on purpose just to get it's lick of chaos," Alek mused, lightly kicking at the sidewalk as he pushed himself back to his feet. maybe his elbows would be a bit bruised tomorrow, but nothing that a little makeup and some long sleeves couldn't fix.

"I'm fine," Alek shrugged off, her eyes on him making him pull his mask up just a little higher. "Nothing I can't walk off."

He brushed himself off, looking at the stranger with a slightly raised brow. "You too, not many people know hoe to navigate a fall like that. And I'm not exactly the accepting death type."

ody hums, approving, like she’s mentally ticking a box.

“yeah, no, you tucked your chin,” she says, casual. “most people flail first and think later. you chose survival. points for that.”

she rolls one shoulder, then immediately regrets it. corrects. pretends nothing happened. very smooth. extremely convincing.

“also, sidewalks here absolutely have beef with pedestrians,” she adds. “it’s personal. they remember faces.”

she clocks the mask adjustment but doesn’t comment on it directly. just lets her gaze drift away like she’s not interested in whatever secret he’s trying to keep. very deliberate not-looking. professional courtesy.

“walking it off is valid,” ody says. “just… if your elbows start feeling like they’re full of broken glass later, ice them. tomorrow-you will appreciate it.”

she steps back half a pace, giving him space, hands shoving into the pockets of her jacket.

“and hey,” she adds, dry. “thanks for not screaming or blaming me or calling the cops. weirdly rare.”

a beat. then, almost as an afterthought:

“i’m odessa. in case you do end up wanting to press charges.”

Ah, so someone who clearly was used to a rougher life. Between the way she looked him up and down like she was assessing him, seemed to know how to mitigate a blow, and the way she looked away to mind her own business, it was coming to be pretty obvious. Everyone in Gotham had some amount of those traits, but especially those who were lower income and got tough to survive.

"You fall enough times, you end up learning how to catch yourself eventually." Alek shrugged, though saw the way her face pinched ever so slightly when she rolled her shoulders. Yeah, totally smooth, nothing to look into there.

"Thanks, I'll try to remember that. And when your shoulder feels as stiff as the pavement it just hit, try sitting up against a hot water bottle, your body will thank you." He added.

Odessa, he would have to remember that, already filing it away in his brain.

"Not the cop calling type. Or just the cop type in general." He extended his hand for a friendly shake. "So no need to worry about those charges. I'm Alex," He lied, something with enough plausible deniability to be chalked up to just mishearing it if he was ever found out.

ody clocks the hand, then the name, then the way he says it. files it under noted, not my problem.

she takes the shake anyway. her grip’s firm but brief, like she’s learned not to linger. skin’s rough, knuckles nicked, a faint tremor she pretends isn’t there.

“alex,” she repeats, neutral. polite enough.

up close, she looks… tired. not the cute kind. the lived-in kind.

she’s wearing a jacket that used to be black but now lives in the gray space between soot and rain, zipper busted so it never quite closes right. underneath, a tank top that’s too thin for the weather and too stretched to sit properly, neckline tugged crooked like it’s lost the will to fight gravity. cheap leggings with a ladder starting at one knee, boots scuffed to hell—functional, steel-toed, ugly on purpose. no jewelry except a battered ring she keeps twisting around her finger like it’s a habit she can’t quit.

makeup is half-ghosted: mascara smudged under one eye, eyeliner clinging stubbornly to the other. hair dragged back into a low tie that didn’t ask permission and doesn’t care what anyone thinks. there’s the faint smell of cigarettes she doesn’t smoke and a sweeter note she definitely didn’t choose.

she could’ve been pretty. that’s the annoying part. good bone structure buried under exhaustion. sharp eyes dulled by too many long nights. gotham just… sanded her down.

she snorts quietly at the hot water bottle advice.

“look at you,” she says. “handing out aftercare tips to strangers on the sidewalk.”

then, softer, not unkind, “thanks. i’ll remember it.”

she shifts her weight, careful now that she’s aware of the shoulder, like her body finally got the memo it’s allowed to complain. doesn’t say anything about it. street rule.

“and yeah,” she adds, glancing once down the block before looking back at him. “cops and i are not on speaking terms either.”

a pause. something almost like a smile tugs at her mouth. doesn’t quite make it.

“nice to meet you, alex. try not to let the pavement win next time.”

she steps back, already halfway gone, like standing still too long might cost her something.

Appearances are often deceiving, so Alek never really relied on them much. After all he was a famous rich boy out here in his Sunday not-so-best. The most average grey sweats that you've ever seen, messy hair in an even lazier ponytail, and worn in vans that looked a year or two past replacement time.

What interested Alek more was her hands, calloused and warn from a rough, working life, and the way her voice, for a split second, softened into something genuine and thankful. The way that her hand trembled slightly, and the way that she shifted like she was waiting for her time to move again—all those things told Alek much more than just the tragedy of a pretty face.

"No problem, it was kind of my fault after all." Alek spoke nonchalantly, though there was a slight crinkle of his eyes from under his mask, like there was a small smile being hidden away under there.

"It's nice to meet you too, Ody."

Alek gave her a small wave as she walked away, pausing to watch her for a moment before heading in a different direction. She was nice, despite how the city tried to take it away. That was pretty rare, she must be pretty tough. As Alek put his hands in his pockets, he had the odd feeling that this seemingly inconsequential interaction was going to stick in his head for a while.

the weight of being watched.

not in the dangerous way. not in the alleyway, count-your-exits way. just… noticed.

she doesn’t turn around right away. pride, mostly. also habit. but at the corner she glances back, quick and subtle.

he’s still there for half a second. hands in pockets. grey sweats. trying very hard to look like a guy who has never had a stylist breathe near him.

she huffs a quiet laugh to herself.

“alex,” she mutters under her breath, like she’s testing how it sits.

then she keeps walking.

her gait isn’t dramatic, but it’s uneven if you’re looking for it. a faint hitch in the shoulder. weight favoring one side. the kind of thing you learn to smooth out so clients don’t ask questions and strangers don’t see weakness.

she passes a shop window and catches her reflection.

smudged eyeliner. windburned cheeks. jacket hanging off her like it borrowed her instead of the other way around.

she makes a face at herself.

“you look like hell,” she informs the glass.

it doesn’t argue.

she pulls her jacket tighter, even though it won’t zip, and heads toward the bus stop. early morning gotham is that weird in-between hour—too late for partiers, too early for commuters. the city looks almost innocent if you squint. like it hasn’t decided who to chew on yet.

she shoves her hands into her pockets and feels the crumpled bills from the night before. counts them by touch. enough. barely.

her shoulder throbs in time with her pulse now. she rolls it once—careful this time—and exhales through her teeth.

“hot water bottle,” she murmurs, annoyed at herself for remembering.

she wonders, briefly, who he really is.

then she shakes it off.

people in gotham are better as passing collisions. easier that way.

still—

as the bus pulls up and she climbs on, she finds herself scanning the street one more time.

just in case.

a billboard passes, and the boy on it looks insanely familiar.
