the magic got away from him

I've always respected how you try to give every game a fair chance. It's way to easy to just boot up a game you think is bad and not give it a chance, just harp on it endlessly and mercilessly without even trying to look on the good sides or give it any real analysis or critique. I've always really really respected how you don't do that even with games most people discount outright and immediately. I feel like this is one of the most important and coolest attitudes a person making stuff about videogames can have on the internet, theres too many dudebros who think being uncritically negative is fun or interesting.

i wasted so much of my early 20s being critical of anything popular and thinking my taste was so elevated because i liked obscure things. something clicked in like 2017 and i started becoming really interested in what it was about popular things that resonated with people. i think i was also tired of never being able to share my interests with people i'd meet, or making stuff nobody understood. i still have obscure interests but tbh the only difference between something obscure and something popular is in how they're saying what they're trying to say. most of the time the message is pretty universal at its core. so i think everything deserves a fair shake no matter what it might seem to be

im pretty mindful to not be completely uncritical either because overcorrecting the other direction just results in an environment where everyone is super sensitive and nobody can say anything unless they run it through 50 different simulations in their head. balancing that stuff is fun and i think results in fun streams where i get to experience something outside of its general reception and make my own opinion, and hopefully the people watching experience those streams in a similar way. thank you !!

On the subject of Hanazuki, here are a bunch of my favorite thumbnail sketches that were in my pitches during the storyboard process. To my immense sorrow, one of my favorite boards featuring a hamburger character with fabulous Rockette legs won’t ever see the light of day since the series was abruptly cancelled. Also featured: the one time I had to design a child’s take on a family portrait.
