in a way black sails and the terror are the same bc they're both shows abt gay ppl on boats w a sprinkle of historical rpf but wait that's not the post I wanted to make no what I mean is that u can tell how many rewatch cycles someone has gone through by the amount of random crew members with minimal speaking lines they can spot and name in the background of any given scene

although i largely love terror/polar exploration fandom and think it's significantly more sensitive and thoughtful than most historically fixated spaces, there is also an undercurrent of subconscious racism and uncritical buy-in to the great man theory + belief that white men's stories no matter how relatively mundane/unremarkable are the center of everything. but then everyone thinks you're crazy for noticing it

#very true #at the same time people also always try to bring this up (which is good!!!) but literally add nothing new to the conversation OR #just don’t educate themselves and it ends up just being the same repetitive posts of #oh we should listen to native peoples and understand that the fandom is mostly white and in turn has some racism issues #and then people proceed to not listen to native fans #or adress their underlying racist or exclusionary beliefs/viewpoints #it’s a doozy if you can’t tell #the terror
