Okay justice for Ilya Rozanov, a man who notably managed his entire families finances and his dementia-having fathers caretaking since he was literally a teenager, while also essentially raising himself to be an elite, generational athlete by himself.

like what is this ‘Ilya needs the threat of a sex ban to pick up his socks’ slander or this ‘Ilya has terrible financial literacy’ misinformation or this ‘Ilya only eats junk food and needs to be forced to eat his veggies’ tomfoolery

I think the funniest thing Rachel Reid could do in Unrivaled is reveal to us (and more specifically Ilya) that Hayden has been invited to the All star games and other big events the entire time and just quietly pays the fine to not go because he wants to spend those times off with his family instead of competing. But also he’s never told Jackie or Shane this: Jackie because she might feel bad he’s missing out on this big thing, and Shane because the man will MURDER him if he finds out.

Hayden and Ilya are actually friends by The Long Game. They're Vitriolic Best Buds, a very old trope. They're Bugs Bunny & Daffy Duck.

The ONLY time Hayden genuinely takes issue with Ilya and pushes the subject is in My Dinner With Hayden (to ILYA, while ILYA is there provoking him, not to Shane, because he is feeling protective of Shane, not angry with him- the subject of his anger is very clearly ILYA), and Shane yells at both of them about it and he immediately sees the error of his ways and apologizes. IMMEDIATELY.

It is canon that he is enough of a well-meaning idiot to question the relationship in a pretty dickish way! I will give you that! But it is also canon that he only does it once and when Shane gets mad he understands he was being a dick, apologizes, and doesn't do it again.

And again, by the time of The Long Game (two years after My Dinner With Hayden)- he and Ilya are Daffy and Bugs. They don't hate each other. They are pretending to for the sake of the bit.

How Ilya shows affection to Hayden:

-eventually realizing that some of his jokes make Hayden truly upset and not doing those (I dont like Ilya calling Hayden a bad husband or father, especially since in the books he doesn’t actually think that)

-coordinates Hayden coming to Ottawa for Shane

-sends “send this to someone who…” memes on social media but it’s all annoying ones with weird videos

-texts him constant Shane updates

-punches out Montreal member for calling him a traitor

How Shane shows Hayden affection:

-sending “send this to your best friend” social media posts on all social media his mom forces him on

-sends him fan edits on social media, mostly platonic but he has definitely sent non platonic shipper edits to Hayden and Hayden doesn’t say anything

-let’s Hayden hug him (in the epilogue of heated rivalry I love that it’s established that Hayden puts his arms out for hugs and Shane decides to close the gap)

-constantly around him, which is the equivalent to a cat staying in your space

-gets him sponsorships, or more specifically gets his mom to do it. He also probably makes Hayden use the same agent

-if Hayden asks a “what did you do” will say the entire thing of what he did from start to finish in bullet points

-bumps his head against Hayden, both with and without helmets

This was specifically in reference to Troy thinking he needs female friends and the interesting idea of Troy feeling he needs to be better of a person and Hayden feeling he needs to be better of an ally/friend post fan mail incident and how they might be able to talk to each other about that without putting that on Jackie/shane/ilya

But also Shane being absurdly jealous that his best friend is befriending Troy and Ilya being absurdly jealous that his best friend is befriending Hayden.

ok so who has the fic about shane enjoying his time in the centaurs but also he really really misses hayden and all the fun things they used to do together while ilya seethes in the background. thanks

I've never had any strong feelings about Hayden regarding the fanmail thing because it was so obviously just a vessel for them getting outed and Shane moving to Ottawa. The story was set up so that there's almost no other way it could have gone down for that level of emotional payout because of Shane's paranoia, and I guess Rachel Reid wanted to do an outing storyline since she never has in the other books.

Maybe it'd feel different if Hayden was more consistently characterized, or if his reasonings for making a few extra bucks on fanmail was ever explained (he's not short on money even with so many kids and fewer sponsorships than Shane, and he's clearly not doing it because he cares a ton about these random people). But overall I'm not mad at him. I don't want to explore Shane or Ilya being mad at him. It's just...whatever.

Okay, but see here, it’s important that Hayden makes Shane laugh.

It’s really important that he’s the one in the locker room who knows Shane’s sense of humor and jokes with him.

Hayden Pike makes Shane Hollander laugh. Hayden Pike knows how to make Shane Hollander smile at stupid stuff.

Hayden doesn’t even sit next to Shane in the locker room, and he’s always making a point to slide around the guy who does sit next to Shane in order to be a goof with Shane.

Hayden does silly stuff he knows Shane will get. He drags Shane around to be a part of his life and share good things with.

Hayden Pike is a good friend, actually.
