Hi Beth! (if i can call you that) I am an aspirating animator and I have a few visible tattoos- Nothing offensive, but visible when wearing everyday clothing. Would you say that my tattoos are something that will be frowned upon when I am looking for work in the future?
In the art industry- not at all! I’m fairly sure in a few studios you could be inked from head to toe, and some people wouldn’t even bat an eye. The dress code is usually pretty universal. Just keep your bits covered and your clothing choices inoffensive.

You’re so very welcome! I’ve had a great time working with my mentee throughout the program thus far. WIA provides some really useful events, and I’m glad the networking aspect seems to be helpful. I’m interested in speaking to the organization about creating an ATL chapter. I feel like those of us on the East coast need easier access to WIA support.

I wouldn’t say any one program is better than any other, definitively. They’re all just tools to achieve the product, so the best choice will depend on the user and the project. There are many factors to consider that will weigh in on the answer. For example: 2D? 3D? Budget? Deadlines? Etc.
Since you’re inexperienced, right now it’s best to work on understanding animation, and less about mastering particular animation programs. You might consider getting your hands on some of the books in my Animation Foundations list. Once you have the knowledge, I found the easiest programs to experiment and practice my animation principles were Adobe Flash and Photoshop. Photoshop due to it’s relative familiarity for most artists, and Flash because you can easily frame-by-frame and scrub.
As for what program I recommend mastering based on industry trends, it would behoove you to learn ToonBoom Harmony (especially puppet animation and using the network). Many studios have already converted to TB (including us), and I don’t see the progression slowing down.

Great news, then! We wouldn’t want to work with you either, pal. But since I’ve received a few other (legit) inquiries about the GA location stipulation, I’ve decided to use your condescending, contemptuous lemons to make condescending, contemptuous lemonade.
You’ll find that in the animation industry, generally most studios would prefer to do in-house as much as possible to maintain creative control and consistency. Freelancers are more commonly used for positions such as tweener or compositor. These are workers on the back-end of the production pipeline that will already have some approved guidelines set in place to complete their work (such as an animatic and keyframes, in the case of the tweener).
As character designers at FCP, we work extremely close with the writers, producers, and directors. Very often we have to make off-the-cuff changes, sometimes even after designs have moved down the pipeline into animation production. Designs are constantly altered, trashed, revived and reverted. The amount of time and effort it would take to accurately communicate these changes to someone offsite would be inefficient at best, and a gigantic waste of time/money at worst. For FCP’s purposes, we would just prefer to entertain applicants that can relocate to, or are already located in, Atlanta, GA.
But hey, the reality is that I do think the employees of our studio are “special.” I’m honored to work with some talented, amazing individuals at FCP, and every single artist is vital to everything we do. Was that classy enough?
