Hello there! Taiwanese American here, feel free to ignore, but I'm honestly really interested in mod teto's thoughts about Taiwanese identity as diaspora, because I've gone on a journey going from identifying as Taiwanese American (internalized sinophobia was oof although Chinese policy on LGBT+ rights also did not help someone discovering their queerness) to Chinese Taiwanese American (because my family's all waishengren [although one side of my family is also Hakka but I'm told they're not benshengren] so maybe all of my cultural heritage is in China and calling myself just Taiwanese would be problematic because of the colonialism of the Indigenous people) and then back to Taiwanese American (because actually I am Taiwanese enough, I grew up with Taiwanese culture and Tai-gi [Taiwanese Hokkien], and that includes Chinese culture while also acknowledging that Taiwanese culture is different because of the historical socio-political context), and I'm wondering if you've had a similar or completely different experience?

i've always identified as Taiwanese American despite half my family being waishengren & the other half being benshengren. though learning half of them were waishengren made me briefly question if i was really half-Chinese, my family has firmly stated they were Taiwanese and did not want association with China anymore.
