TUA: The Great Year-End-Fuck-2020 Fandom Bang!

What a wonderful time it's been. The Great Year-End Fuck 2020 TUA Fandom Bang hosted by Elliott’s House fan server is coming to a close, and we couldn't be happier to have had the opportunity to share these amazing works with everyone.

This fandom is so talented and so full of life, and rich with stories and creativity. To all the participants, thank you for joining in and making something absolutely incredible that no doubt has already - and will continue to - bring joy to fandom community. Every story has a reader, every artwork has an admirer, and all of it is born simply out of love for yet another story, and yet another artwork (does naked Rob Sheehan count as art?). Imagine that - creating simply for the love of it!

Moreover, I think such a fun and inclusive event really brings out the fandom's brightest colours. The diversity of all sorts - all walks of life, different perspectives and tastes and experiences is really showcased here, and I find it so beautiful! I hope others in our fandom will be inspired by the positivity and love you've all shared with us this past week, from whatever corners of the community you call home. Everything is infinitely better when we're together.

EnKlave - New Fandom Event!

They were twelve when they had their first lesson on soulmates. Mom explained it to them as if it were fact and—who knows—maybe it was. Dad sure as hell wouldn’t have let them waste time learning about nonsense, but the idea of being cosmically bound to one person had put Klaus on edge. 

Soulmates were supposedly special, rare—not everyone was lucky enough to have one, which just made the whole thing sound like bullshit. 

As a kid with superpowers, maybe he had no right to judge. Maybe Klaus just never liked the idea that some cosmic force was going to choose his soulmate for him, giving him no say in the matter. What if he wanted to settle down with two people? Or three? Or no one at all? What then, O Great Cosmic Soulmate Chooser? What then? 

Five didn’t seem to like the idea either, which was nice. He was angry they had been forced to waste their time on this, which left him stuck in a bad mood for the rest of the day—short-tempered and snippy. The rest of their siblings had given him a wide berth but, to Klaus, his anger was validating. 

Five was smart. If he didn’t believe in soulmates, then Klaus had nothing to worry about. 

Until a year later, when Five ran away. Then Klaus kind of started worrying about everything, and worried a little more each day Five didn’t come home.

“Having a soulmate is more than just having matching constellations, you know,” Ben told him—as if he would know. “If you really found your soulmate, they would love you with or without the mark.”

It was meant to be comforting, Klaus knew that, but the idea unsettled him, acid churning in his throat. The idea of someone aggressively, persistently loving him made his skin feel too tight. It was the feeling of being backed into a corner during the long nights in the mausoleum, cold stone against his back, twisted, mangled faces of death flickering in front of him, screaming at him, demanding his attention. All he could do was try to drown them out—first with the screams that ripped his throat raw, then with the alcohol he stole from Dad’s cabinet, then the drugs—one thing on top of another until he couldn’t hear them anymore. 

He didn’t want someone to love him. He didn’t want someone to demand his time, his attention; someone with needs and expectations that he was supposed to fulfill, just another angry voice for him to drown out. 

Having a soulmate wouldn’t solve his problems; it would only escalate them. Somehow, Klaus was the only one who could see that.

Klaus’s body shook as Dave’s spirit entered him, pushing his own soul into the metaphorical backseat, his body no longer entirely his own. It was an odd feeling, but not a bad one. He had been ready for the intrusion, to be an observer through his own eyes. If he prepared, if he relaxed, if he trusted enough, the intimacy of it was actually kind of enjoyable. It was strange, the similarities between possession and penetration.

“Wow,” Dave murmured, but it was Klaus’s voice that came out. 

Dave possesses Klaus. It turns out possession isn’t so bad, under the right circumstances.

The instant his toes hit the water he knew he was going to die. It was a primal, gut feeling. The water was cold, freezing. It forced the air out of his lungs as it swallowed him whole, covering his head, dragging him deeper.

His body wouldn’t move the way he wanted it to—he was thrashing to make his way towards the surface, to push himself forward and up.

His lungs started to burn and the pressure built as the desperation to draw breath mounted. He wanted to scream.

He knew it had to end soon, either by rescue or…well. 

In a final involuntary act of desperation, he inhaled, drawing in salty water as it filled his mouth, his throat, his lungs.

And finally, finally, his vision began to darken, the world around him narrowing down and fading away. The fight left him, and he relaxed. His drive upwards ended and he began to drift—down, down, down.

And then, he woke up.

There was a loud banging on the door. “Klaus! Come on man you’ve been in there all morning!” 

Klaus’s head broke the surface of the bath, water dripping from his curls as he pulled himself up.

“I told you not to fall asleep in there! I don’t want you drowning yourself!” Diego’s voice called through the door. “Mom’s making breakfast, so come on down when you’re ready.” 

Klaus looked around the bathroom of the academy. He didn’t think he’d been in there that long—had he fallen asleep?

“Yeah, yeah, quit your whining, I’ll be out in a minute. Go use one of the other bathrooms!

He thought he heard Diego’s retreating footsteps. Sighing, he pulled the chain on the plug of the bathtub out with his toes and watched the water drain around him.

There were an unusual number of ghosts in the house this morning—restless, gruesome ghosts that cried in his room and woke him up at five in the morning. 

He knew he should get up. Go get dressed. Eat breakfast. Join his siblings. Start getting ready for the birthday dinner they’d planned. But he was having trouble finding the energy, and at least the bathroom was quiet for the time being. Fuck. 

He hated being back in the house. Just being there made him want to pop every pill in a 50 mile radius. It made his skin crawl and his mind itch. He could ignore it on a good day, but today was not looking like a good day.

Instead he chewed at the peeling skin around his thumbnail and watched the water swirl down the drain.

“Klaus!” This time it was Allison. “Have you seen my silver cufflinks?”

“Uh, no I haven’t seen them. Maybe Vanya borrowed them?”

“Oh, yeah? Maybe, thanks!”

He heard her heels clicking down the hallway. The truth was he was pretty sure he’d accidentally dropped them down the back of his bedside table, but he didn’t really feel like looking for them. 

He took a deep breath. Well, he may as well face the day.

Fatal Exception Error

Or: Seven Times Grace’s Children Left Her (and One Time They Came Home)

It was an anomaly in her programming. It was two, in fact. The second allowed the first to exist.

The first anomaly was that she wanted the children to be safe. 

She had parameters, of course, to indicate how to keep the children safe and parameters for how safe the children should be. She did not know these parameters in words, but she knew them in numbers: The height from which they could fall without sustaining injury (00.01 excepted), the seconds their lives could be sustained without oxygen (00.02 excepted), the optimal nutrition of the food they consume (00.06 excepted - further testing needed on upper limit of calorie intake). Later, when the children are grown, she will find she has the capacity to apply words to the polar extremes of these parameters. The words are ‘valuable’ and ‘expendable.’

Given strict parameters, she should be able to function within them. But, she had observed, there was a force overriding the parameters: want. She wanted the children to be safe. She wanted 00.04 to stop jumping on his bed even though the bruises he was likely to sustain from a fall would be within the acceptable parameters. She wanted 00.03 to stop holding her breath when she could not get her way. Humans return to normal respiration after losing consciousness in this way. There would be no lasting damage. This, too, was within the parameters. She wanted to prepare a breakfast 00.07 would enjoy eating. It was important she received proper nutrition and Grace wanted her to cease attempts at sneaking her porridge into 00.05’s bowl.  

None of this should be possible. Yearning should not be possible.

She was to report every anomaly to her creator, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, alias The Monocle, in short order so that they may be fixed. Her software was upgraded or patched weekly and Pogo performed hardware maintenance bi-monthly or as needed. With each upgrade, Grace provided a status report on her function and that of the children. However, the first anomaly did not appear in these reports.   

The second anomaly was that she did not want to report it.

It was recursive: She wanted. This was an anomaly to report. She did not want to report it. This, too, was an anomaly to report. This too, she did not want to report. 

The logic was not quite a circle. Her programming allowed her to imagine it as a tightly coiled spiral, each loop touching the surface of the one below it. Though the spiral was tight, she could see a way past the boundaries of the recursion; there were two unjoined ends of the coil from which to escape. She could report the anomalies because of this flaw. 

She did not want to report it.

So she didn’t.

Hello! Voici my entry for the  #TUAbigbang2020!

The prompt you give me was: teeth and anxiety.

I love to torture Diego so much ♥ (and draw our fancy-mischievous Klaus) I cannot resist. Also, I have a second version of the same illustration with a Klaus sleeping near Diego (at the bottom of the illustration) if you accept the two versions and a light Kliego context. I don’t pretend for the prices of the Event as I subscribe myself to late, so it’s only for fun and sharing this with people who love TUA and Kliego! ;3

I hope it’s ok for the entry, but the idea of “when you brush your theet, you clean your skeleton” is an existing prompt (see on tumblr or twitter). I think it match perfectly with the subject, if I found the original autor (or if you know it?), I be glad to credit it.

The wind howled outside and rattled the glass in its frame. Needle shaped raindrops fell from the sky and hit the window. Overhead thunder rumbled, and every few minutes blue lightning flashed and lit up the dark grey clouds. Beside the window, Ben laid on his bed and watched the storm. While the lightning reminded him of Five, the rain was something he always connected with Vanya. He missed them both so much. It had been years since Five vanished, and his sister was at a boarding school outside the country for over a year now.

His mind lingered on the hurricane raging inside his chest. As the years went on, it had become clearer to Ben that he didn’t see a future for himself. Most of his siblings had plans and dreams for when they grew up and left, but Ben couldn’t see himself as an adult. Outside the Academy, there wasn’t a space for him; not one where he’d be treated like a normal human. His future was a blank space. His present too filled with the screaming in his ears and the guilt in his heart.

Unable to deal with the all-consuming pain, Ben shoved his arm in the space between the mattress and the wall. He felt around the bed frame edge until his hand found something metal poking out from under the mattress. Ben grabbed it and pulled up to reveal a wickedly sharp scalpel. The blade was pilfered from the infirmary the last time he helped Klaus break in to steal opiates. The lightning illuminated the scalpel’s keen edge and made it gleam. He rolled his hoodie sleeve up and revealed an arm covered in a litany of scars and cuts.

Some scars were old and gnarled, the skin a faded pink. Many were newer and still the bright pink of healed flesh. The cuts were in various stages of healing. Mostly dry and scabbed over a few had been picked at during lessons with Reginald. They criss-crossed his skin like branches and showed the lasting impact of what he was.

Earlier in the day, Klaus had left their shared room and braved the weather to escape. The Academy was too restrictive for him to stay in, even for a single day. Before he’d gone, his brother had made Ben promise not to cut himself. Klaus worried about him and the way Ben seemed even more withdrawn from the world since Vanya left. This promise was not one Ben could keep. The desire to relieve the pressure within had swelled like a storm cloud, and it needed to burst. The isolation and hopelessness of his situation was too much for Ben to ignore.

[I cannot begin to describe the 15-20 hours of work this took. I was way too lucky when taako rolled such a clean and classic prompt for me, but once I finally imagined in my head what I wanted to do, executing it was a giant obstacle. It’s the most elaborate gif set I’ve made, in terms of number of effects and animation in one set. Photoshop puked on me halfway through this set, in my 3rd draft, glitching and bugging out for anything more than 100 frames long or so. I was so stubborn though. On my fifth(?) draft, here we are. It was most difficult because I had to figure this out never having done it, but also not seeing it done often, and not knowing any kind of related tutorials either. Really knocking around blindly. By the end, loading this in PS was pushing my laptop to the limits, omg it took PS 20 mins to open the document each time I started a fresh session. I do love that in all these processes, I’m recovering old tricks I used to know, and learning some new things I’ve never done in my graphic arts pursuits. It’s not perfect, but I wanted to make something worthy of this event, and to be worthy next to the mind-blowing entries by the others. 

Thank you all who participated in this event, flooding our feeds with beautiful creations for us to enjoy. Fandom creators are so precious to me, I appreciate you all - and all of you who in turn consume and feedback with love! Let’s do this again soon, guys, what a treat it has been. Klaus’ powers are such a double-edged sword for Ben — they allow for his continued existence, but leave him almost entirely at Klaus’ mercy. I figured this makes him a pretty good fit for the prompt existence/entrapment.
