RHI CHANCED ANOTHER GLANCE BACK at the guy, though he was so intent on winning she was sure he wouldn’t notice. “ it’s true. i think he should feel some sort of satisfaction with all that hard work. ” she was wondering how the man’s wrist was holding up for so long. she knew if she played a game for even twenty minutes her fingers started to hurt. maybe that was just because of her not being used to playing for long periods of time.
“ thank you, ” she said after luke gave her her drink. “ oh yeah, i always thought that sounded stressful. i’m glad you’re feeling better with the one job. though i do miss you at one man’s junk. just gives me more of a reason to live here when i’m not working. ” she shrugs a bit when he asks about how she’s been. it’s usually the same old same old and she hopes she isn’t too boring feeling good all the time. “ good! i found a new chair to refurbish. i’m just trying to find the right fabric for the cushion before i figure out the stain. ”
even though he doubts the gamer will notice the pair of eyes on him, luke averts his gaze and is now looking over the rest of the area, instead. witnessing a different player lose his streak and his friend cheering about it, a small smile now etched on his face. he nods. “i couldn’t do it,” he says, and for a moment he’s nostalgic— yet, it’s only a moment. he shoves it to the side, as always, and moves on. “he may become a legend around here.”
a ‘you’re welcome’ is uttered, and another smile is put on at her words. giving a soft chuckle, he shakes his head. “it was a lot. as much as i loved working there, i knew i’d be better off with the cadetina,” for several reasons. that didn’t mean he didn’t miss working with rhi. “how’ve things been over there?” he doesn’t expect much of a change, but he hadn’t been able to so much as visit, since. glad to hear that things are good on her end of the world, he nods. “i’m sure that it’ll come out great, regardless.”

disquieting-metamorphosis :
ED’S EYES FLASHED A GLINT of mischief at the thought of telling han about the kid and getting his reaction. the idea of him knowing he had some pretty threatening competition against his “ass” endeavor was already delighting ed more than it probably should. “ we will, then. maybe what follows will end up in writing one day. ” he winked. he wouldn’t lie and say real life didn’t end up in his writing once in a while. any writer does that. he frowned a little when he said it takes a while. but then he smiled. “ i know how to sweep and i’m sure wiping things down wouldn’t be too difficult for me to learn. if rich wouldn’t mind. if not i can wait outside patiently for an hour to walk you home. ”
knowing how han can be, it’s likely that a friendly war may come out of it. he smiles a bit at all the possibilities, and even the possibility of ed putting it into his writing. “i would give it a read,” he’ll support it wholeheartedly; always interested in what ed writes. he smile grows, which he does his best to hide by looking elsewhere. then comes an actual laugh. it’s light, but has his eyes crinkling. it’s real. “i’m not gonna make you wait outside for an hour,” looking back over, he rubs his eyes with another chuckle. “it’s alright, i doubt that rich would mind,” he assures with a single nod, even throwing in a bit of infrequent humour. truthfully, ed seems to bring out many things in luke. “anyway, three hands are better than one.”
whirrrbleep :
ONE COULD COUNT ON LUKE for a lot of things, but validation was always on the top of rich’s mental list. not that he’d ever exploit it from luke, nor did he think he really deserved the validation, but here it was when he needed it most. it was interesting to think that after all this time, after all the time rich had been there for luke, it was now luke picking him up. though, he knew it wasn’t because he felt he owed him. he would’ve done it anyway. because luke was good and great.
“ you’re a good kid, luke, ” he said, not talking down to him, but because he’d said the phrase for as long as he could remember. he still said it for the nostalgia of it all. he looked forward and down at his drink. “ i know part of me knows it. because i believe it, but i don’t know. i can’t figure out how to make that part of me louder most times. ” he took another drink, then shook his head. “ but this whole party thing kinda has me thinking it won’t be like this forever. ”
many have confided in luke. he’s never been so sure what makes his advice any better than anyone else’s, but he’s always been happy to be there for people. especially those he cares about. it comes naturally, helping others. his heart has always been golden, knowing no hate. he doesn’t even consider the fact that this is such a roll swap between himself and rich. all his life, rich’d been the one keeping him from drowning. now it’s luke’s turn to keep him from drowning. he’s never once left a loved one in the dark.
the phrase hits him with nostalgia. for a moment he’s thrown down memory lane. it’d always been such a rich saying, and always will be. after all these years, he’s beginning to believe it. he smiles a bit, looking forward, and only nods. what rich is saying about making it louder is something luke understands all too well. it takes a lot of work. “it’s not easy,” he states, not looking over yet. “it’s a hard battle, but you’re also strong enough to win it,” he shakes his head. “it won’t be like this forever. everything just takes time.”
get-outofmyhead :
RHI LAUGHED A BIT, GLANCING back at the guy once again, but not for long because she didn’t want him to think she was talking bad about him. she admired the effort and dedication to the one game. “ i would buy him a drink but i wouldn’t want to break his concentration. who knows if he’s mean or not too. though i wouldn’t blame him if he got mad at me for making him lose the game. it could’ve been the one that finally put him at the top. ”
she thought for a moment on the question. “ diet coke, please. ” it really wasn’t because of the sugar, but because she liked the taste better. she glanced away at the other people at the bar for a second more as an antsy tick than anything. she turned back to luke. “ how’ve you been? ”
it’s honestly admirable. plenty spend hours in the arcade end of the bar, but he couldn’t say he’s seen anything quite like this before, which is definitely saying something. “it’s fair,” he agrees, wondering if he’ll still be here in a couple hours, and if he’d make it to the top by then. “you’ve got to give it to him. he deserves that top spot,” hours of commitment to a single game ( no breaks ) isn’t something everyone can do.
he moves away for a moment to fetch the drink. it doesn’t take him long at all, and he’s back over in under a minute, placing the glass before her. “i haven’t been bad... a lot better now that i’m only working one job,” he’s thankful for the little bit of rest he’s able to get now. sleep doesn’t come easy; they don’t get along, but he gets a bit more now that he’s only occupied with one workplace. “how have you been, rhi?”

“ Y’KNOW I THINK THAT CHILD might play ‘ass’ off the high scores before rich has to, ” ed observed, leaning forward a little like he was telling luke a secret. he was spending so much time at the cadetina lately that by now he knew pretty much everything about the going on’s at the bar-arcade. “ han has a formidable foe. should we tell him? ” he smirked a little before he took a sip of his wine and sat back. there was a reason he was always there and he was maybe a bit too obvious about it. not that it was unintentional because he was always so honestly himself, but he was never blunt enough to let his attentions be known. “ how long does it usually take to close? ”
green eyes flick over in the direction of ed’s gaze. his arms crossed over his chest, he finds himself smiling a little bit. although, it’s definitely more of a smirk. the kid definitely seems to be getting up there, and it’s impressive. luke’ll always applaud skill. glad that the lighting is on his side here in the bar, ed won’t be able to catch onto the blush of his cheeks. a gloved hand rises to his face, and he gives a soft chuckle. “we should. i’d like to see his reaction,” he looks back at ed as he sits back. “it usually takes a bit of time...” always extra time for him ( the hand and all ) but he never minds. “close to an hour.”

I am a Jedi. Like my father before me.
i’m quite reserved. i enjoy listening more than i enjoy talking. and i’m usually really difficult to break, i have a guard up. i don’t know whether that’s because of the jobs that i’ve been on or whether it’s always been there, but i’m always really quiet to begin with.
whirrrbleep :
MAYBE SOMEONE WOULD’VE TOLD HIM it was too soon to jump right into hanging around everyone, but rich wasn’t a therapist and he was still impulsive despite the whole issue that got him into this in the first place. he was old and old habits were still going to die hard. and the truth was he really didn’t regret it because there was nothing going wrong. yes, everything was practically right in his face, but he was actually talking to people and he was realizing how much he missed that. he could almost feel the life soaking its way back into his eyes.
it didn’t change the fact the guilt could come back. and he got to thinking too much about how he’d let all of it go and he didn’t deserve it and that it was all his fault. and one look at leah, he remembered she wasn’t talking to him either. which was also his fault and he deserved it. but he could swallow that all down, he just needed to do it outside and away from the situation for a bit. and luke was helping it. and he knew he would help even more as they talked. “ yeah, everything’s a good way to put it. it was all fine at first, great even, but then somehow i started thinking about how i don’t… ” he stops himself from being so blunt out of instinct for the sake of luke, but reminded himself that it was better to be honest. “… i started thinking about how i don’t deserve it. ”
it isn’t unreasonable. the whole situation isn’t an easy one to deal with, and luke understands the guilt that continues to drag rich through the mud. guilt carries a lot of power, and brushing it off isn’t so simple. it’ll eat away at you for as long as it desires. and so he understands how much it’s been continuously draining rich. there’s nothing he can do except give his advice and reassurance, but even that won’t be enough to whisk it away. that takes time, and in addition, it takes practice. it takes effort. if there’s anyone who’s learned this lesson, it’s luke.
leah still isn’t speaking to rich. he doesn’t linger, but in the past couple hours, he has been keeping an eye on both of them. he knows that this, too, is also impacting all of this. that the fact that leah still isn’t speaking to him, is making him feel even worse; making the guilt hit him harder. whatever words were said in their meet ( luke knows they couldn’t have been kind; knowing his sister when angry ), are only floating around rich’s head. he wishes he could help, but some things just aren’t in one’s business. this is an example. “you do deserve this,” he heartens softly, studying his face for emotion. “i know that she’s not talking to you yet, but she will come around,” luke knows leah better than anyone else. “she still loves you, r. the rest of us, too.”

THE LITTLE NEW YEARS PARTY was needed. yes, he had been guilty of being angry at rich to begin with and that was a huge risk considering the man signed his checks. but because rich is a good guy he didn’t take what he said as a boss, but as someone that hurt a close friend of phil’s. and honestly that just made him feel guilty now. well, it wasn’t the only thing. finding out why rich really left, seeing him walking around looking like he could collapse from exhaustion at any moment, and honestly just the fact how hard he was working to make it up to everyone really brought on the guilt.
but phil really didn’t talk about things, for the most part. and yes, he could talk it all out with rich, but they didn’t exactly have deep talks before and he doubted that he was actually going to tell him if he asked. so, taking the best opportunity, he asked luke. they were closing together that night since rich was taking a much needed night off away from the cadetina and things were relatively light considering how well the party went. so he paused for a second in the middle of putting away glasses to look at him. “ how’s right doing anyway? ” it was a bit direct, but phil was never one to just beat around the bush in the first place. it was just a lot of unnecessary talking.
out of all of the ideas rhi’s had, the new years eve party had to have been one of the best. it was needed. he was glad that he decided to agree on it, despite it seeming a bit too soon. if they hadn’t gone through with it, who knew what the group would be like right now. disastrous; hanging by a thread. but he won’t think too much on that. things are returning to how they were. rich was getting better by the day. he’d made up with leah. but he isn’t sure if she’d spoken to rich yet. he’ll remain in high hopes. she can’t hold off on it forever.
another thing that luke isn’t so sure about at the time would be rich and phil. he knows that things have been tense between them, and he understands where it comes from, without either of them really having to say anything. they were all effected by rich’s leaving in one way or another, bentley included. phil was only being there for a friend, which luke couldn’t go against. he isn’t sure if rich and phil have spoken— really spoken. the silence is broken by phil, luke raising his head to glance over. he gives a nod, looking back down to the glasses he’s putting away. “he’s alright,” he’ll be honest about it.
“he seems to be doing a lot better than he was... and the party helped,” rich didn’t lie. he appreciated the event, and it meant a lot to him. “once he and leah are back on speaking terms... things’ll get better, then, too.”

Return of the Jedi Luke + Dark & Light
whirrrbleep :
HONESTLY, HE WASN’T SURE WHAT he’d do without rhi in the group sometimes. he wasn’t sure what he’d do without any of them. it was lonely being on this side of things and maybe he was still feeling like he wasn’t in the group, he was at least touching it and that was progress to him. things could be normal again and everything would be okay. that’s what he had to keep reminding himself. that’s what he wanted.
if that’s what you wanted then why did you leave.
“she’s a good seed, ” he said, smiling again. thinking about her made him smile. talking to luke made him smile. for now, it was the little things. he glanced back at doors and could see some of them talking and laughing through the glass. he nodded. “ yeah, it looks like a hit. ” he looked back at him when it came to be about him enjoying himself he nodded again, but less solidly. “ it’s great i’m just… thinking too much. ”
initially, luke thought it would be too soon. he wasn’t sure if rich would want this kind of thing. if he’d be able to handle this kind of thing. being around everyone he left, around everything that continues to feel so guilty over. would it only remind him of his guilt, or would it be a start at mending things? all of these thoughts riddled him until the moment he saw rich’s face when they’d surprised him. when he saw how happy all of it ended up being.
he nods his head in agreement at what rich says about rhi, wearing a gentler smile. she holds such a special place in all of their hearts. she’s family. he, too, glances over his shoulder to peer inside. it lifts his heart. this is them. this is how things have always been. how they should be. how they will be. his hands retreat to his pockets. “about everything?”

DESPITE EVERYTHING GOING ON WITH everyone on a personal level, rhi was determined to continue on as normal as she could. so she found herself at the cadetina after work, playing through some games between exchanging conversations with luke when he wasn’t busy. she wasn’t exactly a world champ at any of them by any means, but since she became a regular at the bar, she could say she wasn’t too bad at a game of moon patrol.
she frowned as her rover blew up long before her personal best ( her personal best was fourth on the high score board ) and decided since the bar seemed pretty slow at the moment she decided to head back over there. she hopped onto a stool and grinned at luke. she motioned behind herself towards the donkey kong machine and the guy in front of it. “ he told me he’s been at it for six hours. i didn’t want to ask how much money he’s been spending from having to start over. ”
it’s not the most thriving of nights, nor is it incredibly slow. just about right, is what luke would consider it, and it’s a blessing. green seas of damage are more tired than usual. he’s been stifling yawns for the past hour or two; loud and particularly disruptive patrons aren’t needed, tonight of all nights. rhi’s there, as well. with her heart that’s full of generosity and hope, only good can come out of her company. she’s good at keeping people on their feet.
he’s sliding a beer across the bar when, out of the corner of his eye, he spots the brunette heading over. a small smile is brought to his face. glancing behind her to the machine and the guy ( who’s been there for hours ), he chuckles softly, giving a brief shake of his head. “he has been at it for hours,” he confirms, finding it entertaining. “i’ve almost never seen such devotion in an arcade player before. he was there when i came in,” he gives another smile, looking back to her. “do you want anything? a water?”
“oh that’s wonderful,” she said as she finished stretching and moved to follow the instructor into their first pose. “it’s always nice to get a bit of time off, even if you do enjoy your work,” she said softly. “do you have any exciting plans yet? or are you just planning on enjoying a quiet day in?”
luke, too, moves into their first pose after finishing up the stretching. “that’s true,” there’s a slight nod of agreement. “a quiet day in will do just fine. not often do i get the chance.”
whirrrbleep :
RICH HONESTLY EXPECTED LUKE FIRST out of anyone that would come out there after him. he just hoped he hadn’t seen him leave. not because he didn’t want him there ( a very selfish part of him was glad he was there ), but because he didn’t want to ruin his good time. he honestly didn’t see a single frown on anyone in that bar tonight and that was relieving to say the least. at least everyone was happy. that was getting better at least.
but either way, he smiled at luke when he put his hand on his shoulder, glad to see him. “ alright, ” he answered and it wasn’t a lie though maybe someone else would think it was. because he was alright. he wasn’t perfect, maybe good was stretching it, but he felt alright. he supposed they could take that as good news. “ thanks for this. i know it was rhi’s idea or whatever, but i know you had to have some part in the whole thing. ”
it’s an assuring answer. not that luke would ever accuse him of lying or have any doubt. it comes with a smile, which is something he hadn’t really seen the couple days prior to tonight’s event. granted, yes, he’d seen smiles, but they never met his eyes. they were barely there. but he’d never comment on it. rich was trying. he is trying, still, and he’s doing alright. he’ll take that as good news.
“rhi deserves the credit. if it wasn’t for her, this wouldn’t be happening at all,” he nods his head some, looking forward. he drops his arm back to his side and breathes in the winter air for a moment. he smiles, glancing over at him for a second. “i’m just glad it’s going well... everyone seems to be— enjoying themselves,” the family kind of feels like a family again. fingers crossed it stays this way; things continuing to look up. “i hope you are, too.”
