zatanna is the daughter of the world famous magician giovanni zatara and sindella, a member of the mystical homo magi race.
her mother seemingly died in a car accident not too long after giving birth to zatanna so her father raised her all on his own in a small house in gotham, not too far from arkham asylum.
they often traveled the world for his extravagant shows and along the way he taught her everything he knew about stage magic. once she perfected those skills and he trusted she was ready he went on to train her in the mystic arts, more notably how to incant spells by speaking backwards.
for a while her father went missing without a trace but zatanna continued her career as stage magician and also assisted people in need with her powers. the justice league, having worked with her dad on a number of occasions, approached her to join them on a number of cases and offered to help her locate him before later being elected to full membership.
after she was reunited with her dad, all was pretty peaceful but that didn’t last long as zatanna discovered that her mom didn’t actually die but was taken forcefully back to the homo magi by an extremist group as they needed her powers for their civilization to thrive. which she learned of through her mom contacting her telepathically. along with her father and the justice league, they traveled to the city of the hidden ones to rescue her but were unsuccessful in their mission, as zatanna’s mother ended up sacrificing herself so that zatanna didn’t suffer the same fate as her.
she was still very naive as she came into her own though, the greatest example of this being when she was convinced by her former lover, john constantine, to talk her dad into joining them and a group of sorcerers in a ritual to fight the great darkness.
needless to say, she was dumb to do that and would never make the mistake of fully trusting that loser ever again.
cause yeah, it ended up going haywire and all the mages involved ended up dying in the most grotesque manner. including her dad. who cast an incantation in order to keep her from being eliminated as well, another parent ultimately sacrificing themselves for her sake.
she left the justice league for a bit, giving up on her mystical abilities and focusing on her stage magic career to continue her father’s legacy. she even made it big enough that she has actual magic sets and merch in stores.
she still helps the justice league when they need her help or mystical consultation. but for the most part she works on her own or with the justice league dark team, dealing with all of the more supernatural threats plaguing the world.
it was tough not to constantly have the state of the mutant world at the forefront of her mind, not to have the gears turning up there as she tried to formulate plans that she could bring up to the team as to what their possible next step could be. that was just the type of person rogue was. she was proactive. and she liked to take action as soon as possible. the idea of just sitting around as the situation worsened to wait and see what happened next didn’t quite sit right with her. the only thing really keeping her from bubbling over from the frustration was the moments of reprieve she had with remy and their little cat family. she found herself laying on the floor of the room, gloved hand out as she played with one of the cats. “ ya ever just find yourself wishin’ you could trade places with one of these lil’ rascals? not havin’ a real care in the world. just eatin’, sleepin’, and bein’ adorable. sounds like the life, huh? “ she asked, realizing she was mostly just rambling like someone who had lost it. maybe this downtime really was needed.

anna was born mostly in an attempt by her parents to fix their deteriorating marriage after getting married so quickly into their relationship.
not long after anna was born her parents were recruited into a nature loving commune (cult) whose goal was to reach a native american mythological dreamland, where the rules of the physical world no longer applied.
something went wrong with the ritual and her mom along with the commune vanished.
her dad, not knowing where else to turn went to his wife’s sister, carrie, to help him raise her.
it was a strict upbringing, since her aunt didn’t want her to repeat the mistakes of her mother, but the whole unattainable aspect of her made her desirable to most of the boys in town.
eventually she fell in love with one boy in particular, cody.
the night they shared their first kiss, anna’s first kiss ever, she developed her power to absorb the life energy and psyche of others with skin-to-skin contact and left the boy in a lifelong coma.
after the other townsfolk discovered her abilities they ambushed her home with torches and guns.
her father fought off the mob while she ran off into the swamplands. not long after this is when she ran into raven darkholme, the mutant known as mystique, who took her in as her own daughter.
in time mystique turned rogue's loneliness, envy, bitterness, and despair into anger, using that to get her to join the brotherhood of evil mutants.
rogue fought with the brotherhood for a while before she turned to the x-men, more specifically charles xavier, to help her with the effects of her powers. since absorbing people’s life energy also had her absorb their memories and it was essentially overloading her own mind.
after this the professor invited her into the x-men, even though the others were weary about her joining the team. eventually she was welcomed
she still struggles to keep her powers in check at times and the trauma of putting people in the hospital because of them has her usually wearing body-concealing clothing that eliminates the possibility of accidental skin contact but she’s learned to deal, even choosing to become a mentor for younger mutants.

stephanie brown was born to arthur and crystal brown. The former of which was better known as the cluemaster, one of gotham city’s third-rate villains, considering how many times he was caught. he’s basically like the riddler but instead of leaving riddles he leaves clues. but because of how often his schemes were thwarted by batman the man spent the majority of steph’s life in and out of prison.
steph, tired of her fathers games, tailored a costume all by herself and took up the mantle of spoiler because she was determined “spoil” her father’s plans once and for all. using his own tactics she left clues behind for batman and robin (tim drake at the time) on where to catch her dad. and because of her relationship to man and knowledge of how he thought they allowed her to work with them that one time. after which batman basically told her to stop and live a normal life.
as you’ll come to learn, steph never listens to a thing bruce says and kept doing vigilante work as spoiler long after, despite the man’s wishes.
sometime down the line she became pregnant from an ex-boyfriend, had the baby, and gave her up for adoption.
all this time and history having spent with both batman and robin she didn’t know their true identities until bruce sought her out to train her after tim was forced to quit his role as robin.
she trained as the new robin with bruce and the birds of prey for a few months before bruce fired her for disobeying his orders and being too careless out in the field. because her reckless nature reminded him too much of jason todd and he didn’t want a repeat of the situation with the former robin. and as fate would have it he wasn’t wrong to be weary.
steph going out in the field alone to prove herself to bruce and subsequently ended up captured by black mask. she was tortured for information on batman’s identity and as a result “died”.
it was revealed later that dr. leslie tompkins helped her fake her death and that steph spent the year everyone believed she had passed away with her in africa recovering and doing volunteer work under an alias.
after her return to gotham she eventually took up the mantle of batgirl under tutelage from barbara gordon herself for a while before the once again taking up the mantle of spoiler.
