watched one episode of ride or die and I am immediately in love. wdym we have one hot woman who strides down the stairs like she owns the place and can probably kill someone in a hundred different ways, and another equally hot equally badass woman who is introduced by deftly plying a security guard with tea to get an edge in an antiques show and is masterful at political maneuvering, and they’ve known each other for 20 years and have delightful chemistry and say I love you in a way that is maybe not platonic nor romantic but a secret third thing. icons.

what's so devastating about having Young Sherlock focus on Sherlock before he's a consulting detective and James before he's, well, an evil genius out to destroy Sherlock even if it will kill them both, is that James and Sherlock meet at their lowest emotional and professional points in the series. they see each other at their most abandoned and vulnerable, but it's actually Sherlock who is the most vulnerably open, because James very rarely gives anything away about himself or his history.

Sherlock, meanwhile, brings James everywhere and invites him to the most inner circle of his life. he even trusts him with his own mother. it makes the pit of my stomach churn watching it, because you can just see James filing away all of this information in the way he files away everything he learns about everyone -- it's how James has survived, by remembering everything about a person's situation and what their weaknesses are, because he's a person who has had to work upon weaknesses to get what he's owed.

at the same time, James is so devoted to Sherlock that we know his efforts to help him all the time is genuine. and yet...he's going to remember all of this, and he's going to use all of this one day, too.

I know this will probably be a hot take but I think this might be my favorite iteration of Mycroft. He's clearly frustrated with Sherlock's shenanigans but I love that you can see his genuine affection for his brother coming through even when he's trying to keep him in line. You can also tell how much his actions are driven by the fear of losing him the way they lost Beatrice. He can't save his little sister so he will do everything, even bend the rules a bit, to save his little brother. And he's not just doing it because he's scared himself, he also wants to spare their mother the pain of potentially losing another child. This "softer" version of him is just an interesting take on the character imo
