     “You’re a werewolf, you’re not supposed         to find this stuff weird. But yes, I’m real         and very undead. “

     “My moms come from a fairy tale world, not a horror        movie world.  Vampires aren’t exactly a thing there.        ...So do you, like, really bite people and everything?”

AUNT EM:

The moment she heard the all-too-familiar-voice Emma flipped the case file she was looking at closed. Her hand even went so far as to rest over the label to keep prying eyes from seeing whose name was there as she glanced back over her shoulder towards her charge for the day.

“Ava, aren’t you suppose to be finishing up homework, or something?”

The young girl pouted as the file was obscured from view.      Of course this had been expected,   but Ava always hoped that this time would be the rare exception where Emma actually showed her what was going on.

    “Finished  it  already.  C’M’ON, Aunt  Em,  I       wanna see! I won’t tell what’s in it, promise.”

      “Mommy, read me a story!”

It’s more of a demand than a question as she plops down in her mother’s lap, presenting  her  with  the newest  book  she  wants  them  to  read  together.

CUSTOMER:

         "Pleased to make your acquaintance, Ava.          I was wondering, how’s the peach cobbler?          I’m craving something sweet.“

Ravi’s eyes travelled from the menu up to meet Ava’s, a smile that mimicked her on his lips. He loved Diners, that’s how he had discovered some of the best-tasting American food in his time in the States. 

        “ Is your disposition usually this bright or is          today a special day? ”

     “It’s really good! My Granny makes it herself, and it’s my        favorite          - well, only after  Mama’s  hot  chocolate.”

If possible, her smile only brightens at his question.         She’s not surprised by it, not really-- - sure, most waitresses here are friendly, but not  practically  BURSTING  with  energy  the way she is today.

               “Well, I like to think I’m usually like this, but        -                 today’s my first day officially serving! I’ve helped                 out lots before,  but  not  by  MYSELF  ‘til  now!”

MAMA:

     Red hadn’t intended on working today,  but when she’s needed what else      can she do but come running to Granny’s aid? So much for her and Ava’s      little day together.   Now the poor tot was set down in the diner with a few      toys while Red tried  her best  to pay  attention to  her work and to the girl.      Maybe she wasn’t doing the best at either jobs,           since she is almost       startled that Ava is standing before her asking to be picked up.   Red puts      aside a tray of used dishes and leans down to scoop the pup into her       arms, offering her a very short poke of the nose.

                      ❝ There’s my beautiful pup. Want to help mama with                           her work? ❞

     All Red gets is a nod in return, accompanied by babbling in place of any sort      of coherent answer. It’s fairly obvious that Ava doesn’t quite know what she’s      signing up for, though, as one hand grabs a fistful of her mother’s dark locks      and the other reaches out to cover her nose,   a clumsy mimic of her actions      moments earlier. Really, this is only hindering Red’s job rather than helping it.

       ❛ dawn, it’s late and i’m tired. quit the games and go home. ❜  

      “Excuse me? My  name’s  Ava,  not  Dawn.        I don’t even  KNOW  anyone named Dawn!         And no way am I going anywhere with you!”

        ❛ —- i’m staring because i’m wondering why my sister is out and about past curfew when she’s grounded. that’s why. ❜  

        “Okay... that’s great and all               - but          what does your sister have to do with ME?”

PACKMATE??:

     “That I am darlin’. I’m not too sure, I was        part of Anita’s pack in the past, but I am        kind of on my own now.”

     “Anita...  that’s my grandma, right? Mama’s mama?        - --Huh. Why don’t we make our own pack, then?”

      “So. You’re friends with my moms, right?          But you’re also a wolf like me? Ooh-- -         are you guys a PACK or something!?”

     And  now  she’s  holding  her  hands  out, gazing  up      imploringly as she waits to be lifted into familiar arms.

      “Hey, Aunt Em? I, um, could kinda         use your  HELP  with something.”

      “So... who’s DAWN?   I can hear you whispering         about me and her all the way from here, y’know.”

Okay, so maybe she shouldn’t be so nosy.   But this is about herself, after all        - plus, with her wolf hearing, it not like she could exactly MISS it.

MAMA:

      Red carefully untangles herself from Belle, pressing a kiss to the sleeping       librarian’s head before she’s slipping out of the bedroom entirely.   She is       careful as to her steps down the stairs,   terrified to awaken Belle,  even if       Belle doesn’t have wolf’s hearing.        Red can hear the milk beginning to        boil as she nears the kitchen.      Idly she ties her hair up, smiling softly at        Ava when she enters.  A gentle hand comes to rub Ava’s shoulder as she       passes her by to see to the drinks rather quietly.      Maybe she’s hopeful        that her daughter will just fall asleep then and there, though she knows it       more than likely will not happen.          Soon enough she’s producing two        mugs of Lucas’ finest hot cocoa,      and is resting them on the table near       the both of them.

     She stays silent for a while, eyes fluttering shut as she listens to the soothing      sounds of her Mama moving about the kitchen. There’s a  smooth,  practiced      ease to the way she moves in here-- -  which is no surprise, really,  given that      the older werewolf has been doing this since before Ava was even born. Only      once she hears the soft thunk of mugs against woodwork does Ava finally lift      her head,   giving her Mama a murmur of thanks before lifting the concoction      of chocolate-y goodness to her lips.   The familiar taste is soothing; while it’s      not quite enough to lull her to sleep,  it still takes the edge off her exhaustion.

          “Hey, Annie! How’s it going?”

    She slides into the booth across from the younger wolf with     relative ease, oversized backpack and all.  It’s obvious that     she’s come from a rather long day at school, but regardless,     her smile is still bright and genuine as she regards her sister.
