my whole life
It didn’t take her long to realize the girl wasn’t listening. About two seconds before Max tugged her earbuds out, Rachel had stopped speaking. She stared at the girl for a moment, listening to her awkward speaking. She couldn’t help but smile even wider, fighting the urge to laugh.
She took a sip of her latte, trying not to hurt Max’s feelings by laughing at her. Rachel hated Seattle already. Probably because she was stuck with her mom, whom she never got along with. Still, Max could serve to be the one interesting thing about this trip.
“You’re Max Caulfield, right?” She asked before taking another sip. She placed her cup back onto the table and twisted a strand of her golden hair around her finger.
“From Arcadia Bay?” She untangled her hair a tossed it over her shoulder, her finger now moving to tap softly on the table. “Chloe’s BFF?”
The world was going crazy or, at least, Max was. She had put so many miles between herself and Arcadia Bay and yet here was some girl she had never even seen before who knew who she was somehow. It felt really weird to say the least. Like, opening scene of a bad movie weird. She was very visibly creeped out for a second before she absorbed the second part of what the blonde had said. Chloe’s BFF? Of course it was Chloe. This was probably a friend of hers. Max spent a lot of time thinking about Chloe. It seemed like no matter how much distance there was between them physically, Chloe seemed to permanently occupy some space in her mind. If her old friend was still talking about her to this day, she probably felt the same way. She wondered whether or not Chloe still considered her a friend after everything that happened. It would be hard to blame her for having hard feelings.
“Oh, you know me?” Max said, brushing her fingers against the back of her neck nervously. “How is she? Chloe, I mean.”

Chloe’s eye rested on her friend. She seemed to be in deep thought for a moment, and she almost hoped she was having some sort of epiphany. Chloe didn’t even want to think about Nathan not being their guy. She hated him, after all, he did drug her. God knows what he would have done had she not woken up. So what were the chances that he didn’t do the same to Kate Marsh? Except he probably got what he wanted from her, and his friends bullied the poor girl into suicide. What a fucking scumbag. The thought made her inside burn with anger.
She couldn’t fight the thought that he did the same thing to Rachel. That psychotic drawing in his school files made her certain he did something. That made her more pissed than anything else. She found herself walking to her desk to roll up a joint. She had retrieved her lighter and lit it up when Max asked her about the day.
“Huh?” She asked before taking a rather long drag from her blunt. So much had happened that she honestly had to think for a moment to remember the day. She grabbed her phone from beside the bed where it was charging. “Thursday the ninth.”
She sat down back onto the bed, giving Max a concerned look. “Why? What’s up?”
She sighed. She had slept until noon and missed half of her classes. Way to go and waste your scholarship, Max. Your parents would be oh so proud of you.
“I guess I’m skipping class. Nice.” Max said, her face contorting into a disappointed scowl. She wasn’t going, of course. It was easier to explain a full day’s absence than half a day.
Max wasn’t exactly surrounded with pot smoking types back in Seattle, but since returning to Arcadia Bay she had become accustomed to the scent of the burning herb. In a way, it was associated with Chloe, almost as though her own scent and the scent of the drug had become one in her mind. That being said, it was still mildly unpleasant to her. Almost as a reflex her hand rose to cover her nose.
“My head’s all wrong for this kind of thing, Chloe. I just can’t piece any of this stuff together.”
He couldn’t believe she said yes. Idiot. “Hey, no problem. Let’s go.”
She needed to come up with an excuse to get away from him. “Uh, actually, I’m kinda broke. Sorry, maybe another time, then?”
“Awesome. So Two Whales is okay? I’ll buy.”
She knew that she just made a huge mistake, “Sure... But you don’t have to buy for me, okay?”
“Jesus.. Is this really a big deal? Yes or no.”
“Sure, why not? It’s just weird is all.”
“Shit. Well.. I wanted to maybe… I don’t know. Get lunch?”
“With me? You want to get lunch with me? Why not one of your friends?”

“Uh… You’re asking me?”
“Yeah. So… Are you?”
“I guess. Why, though? I mean, um, why do you ask?”
@ofreversals liked for a dialogue starter.
“So.. Max.. You busy?”
“Uh... You’re asking me?”
In the Blind /With selfmxdicating
His eyes darted around, looking for anything that might help them. Needles, syringes… God, it was fucking hard to look around from this spot. Maybe the table he was chained to… He tried to remember what was where, but his nerves were making it hard to think of anything but this moment.
It was worth a shot, right? He used his body to hit the table, e could hear things being knocked over. Please… Please let something good happen for fucking once. And as if to answer his prayer, about three syringes fell off of the table. One rolled too far for him to reach, the other two rolled but not as far. He moved as much as he could, rolling on over with his leg. Once it was close enough, he breathed a sigh of relief.
“I got one Max! What do you want me to do!?”
“Do you think you can pick the lock?”
It would be so much easier to help him if she could see, but now wasn’t the time to dwell of what-ifs. Getting him free was just one step on her path to escaping this place alive. She struggled against the duct tape that bound her wrists and ankles again, but they gave no quarter. She would need Nathan’s help, something she never expected to need.
She could fix this, she had to. After all, she was the one with the power to change things at will. Chloe had died before, and she’d fixed that, too. She’d even gone back and ripped her father’s life from death’s hands. Damn the consequences this time. After all, this was not her reality anymore. She didn’t have to accept it, and so she wouldn’t. Fuck that.
“Nathan, look... I’m sorry about this.”
