ofthedeathdance asked: ‘this should ease the pain for a little while.’ [ ofthedeathdance ]{ Tristan } ---- @ofthedeathdance
Everything hurts to move as sensation returns, but what hurts far worse is the gnawing hunger. Thalyssra had lost count of for how long she’d staggered bleeding and soaked to the skin through dense woodland outside of the city she’d forever called her home, until each step seemed an impossibility, until the world spun painfully around her and nothing made sense, until at last she could walk no further in a country she did not now recognise, and she had collapsed despairing to the unforgiving ground. She had watched the new, strange stars wheel overhead, felt the gentle kiss of moonlight – the first starlight, the first moonlight in ten thousand years – and she had been barely aware of more than pain, before awareness slipped entirely. Perhaps she would have died there, left like fallen leaves to feed the flowers. Perhaps she would have died there, if she hadn’t been found. She becomes aware of rough but gentle hands touching her kindly, searching perhaps for life, and careful fingers which probe at the stab wound in her back that turns the grass to a bloody mire beneath her. A voice calls to her, the voice of a man, but she doesn’t recognise the words he’s saying. It’s a fight to reopen her eyes, and when she manages that feat, the whole world swims, and she can’t focus on his face, but it’s not like hers. He’s an Outlander. An Outlander, but he’s kind. He presses something to the edges of her wound, something strange that feels like a poultice, and his words at last make sense: this will ease her pain. She shifts uncomfortably as he does so, but he’s right; whatever it is he’s applying to her skin, it makes it hurt less, even if it’s cold. She loses track again, and drifts. When she next awakens, she hears more voices; crackling campfire, soft song. We will go home, across the mountains. The longing in those words is a familiar one, and she feels it, and it brings her to weep. “What manner of creature is she?” Someone asks, and then, “she’s crying. Do you think she’s in pain?” Thalyssra is ashamed of her tears, but she knows what it is, now, to be an Exile. It is her burden, as well as theirs, and she, too, will go home even if she must drag herself there on all fours like a wounded beast. Dimmed eyes once more open to the slightest cracks, and observe the faces of men; weather-worn, tired, but somehow friendly. They are cautious of her, for she is an unknown. They are cautious of her, but they tend to her wounds and have laid her near their fire for warmth, wrapped up in their cloaks. She cannot thank them enough. Her gazes focuses on her first rescuer, and she tries to smile at him. She thinks she might be ready to attempt words, but her throat is dry, and her lungs are hoarse from the salt-water that flooded them when they tossed her over the harbour wall. The hunger cuts like a knife, and she’s distressed to see that the Withering has already started, the health of her body already failing. She’s losing muscle-mass and strength together. She needs a source of mana if she’s to live, and soon. “–Thal-yssra.” Her voice is hoarse, and she can barely lift her hand, but she points at her own chest as she says it. Thalyssra. That’s me. “–I –I need – your help. Please. I must – save my people…”
It had been strange, for a start, coming across someone in the forest. It had become only stranger still when he realized the other’s skin was not painted such an unnatural shade, but rather, it simply is that color. And then to see what other odd features the woman possesses…
But… she was clearly unwell and whatever she may be, she hardly seems a threat at present. Thus, he had done what he could for her until at last Arthur and the other knights reached him, and Arthur had decided, in light of this development, to make camp and to keep an eye on the woman.
At her attention––and, of course, he notices those eyes upon him––he simply stares at her in turn, though his own expression does not change.
When she speaks, however, Arthur is the one to address her.
“Your people? What people are those? Are they near to here?”
Leave it to Arthur to immediately jump to asking questions when the woman had barely managed those words for a start.
Taking up his own water skin, Tristan pushes to his feet and deliberately approaches the woman. Just as slowly and carefully, he kneels down and offers it to her.
“Here. Some water should help.”

If he liked you, you’d have to talk to him.” “I wonder who first discovered the power of poetry in driving away love?” “I thought poetry was the food of love.” “So what would you recommend to encourage affection?” “You know perfectly well I don’t believe marriage should be driven by a lot of money.” “Only the deepest love will persuade me into matrimony, which I why shall end up an old maid.” “He danced with you most of the night and stared at you the rest of it.” “I could more easily forgive his vanity if he had not wounded mine.” “Your skills in the art of matchmaking are positively occult.” “Although I don’t think you can reasonably take credit for making it rain.” “You drop something, they pick it up, and then you’re introduced.” “I think it’s amazing you young ladies have the patience to be so accomplished.” “I never saw such a woman. She would certainly be a fearsome thing to behold.” “I can admire you much better from here.” “Would you consider pride a virtue or a fault?” “We’re doing our best to find fault in you.” “I find it hard to forgive the follies and vices of others, or their offenses against me. What a shame, for I dearly love to laugh.” “I think a ball is a perfectly irrational way to make new acquaintance.” “What excellent boiled potatoes. It’s been many years since I’ve had such an exemplary vegetable.” “How happy for you to possess the talent for flattering with such delicacy.” “Believe me, no one would suspect your manners to be rehearsed.” “I can’t be trusted. I’m of next to no importance, so it’s easily done.” “You can’t invite people to other people’s balls.” “It is not for me to be driven away.
