@materxnatura did not like anything for a starter, but she made the decision to be friends with me so fair game.
The Elvenking has felt… something for some time now, a prickling at his skin, an awareness that he cannot and would not dismiss as being without reason or merit. Not when he feels as though he is being watched.
It does not strike him as anything dark or ill-intentioned, and so he says nothing of it even once only he remains within the throne room. It is not like the feeling of the forest beyond his halls. It merely is and for a time he thinks that he will wait them out to see if they will reveal themselves unasked.
He grows tired of waiting, however. Patience never has been one of his virtues––but then, what might be, faithless woodland sprite that he is?––and he addresses the presence.
“… If you think me so foolish or to be so influenced by our excellent Dorwinion that my mind is muddled or my senses dulled, then I regret to inform you that you would be mistaken,” he says, taking a sip from the glass of said wine before he continues.
“How much longer shall you linger out of sight, Shadow? It is of little consequence to me, only that I wish to know whether I might return about my duties for a time without inconvenience, or if you mean at last to approach with what-ever matter has led you to undertake such furtive methods…”
Anonymous said: I just wanna say how happy I am to see you back on this blog! You're absolutely one of my favorites! And also! The whole world and universe and adaptations and stuff you've made with dryadalismagicae is AMAZING and i have re-read your threads together time and time again in the past. Just wanted to say. Welcome back!
😭😭😭
Anon, I don’t know who you are, but this message absolutely made my entire damn week. Maybe the whole month. Thank you so much for this. You have no idea how happy it made me.
@dryadalismagicae is honestly such a talented writer and I love what we’ve been able to create by blending the different sources into one universe. I have also missed writing Thranduil and writing with Lyrieux very much, and I was thrilled to finally start having muse again both here and with my Fae. They’re all my babies and I love them, and I love all of Lyrieux’s babies, too.
Thank you so much again!!!

“There once was a time when my realm was the entirety of the forest, and people lived free in the woods. They built their homes in the trees and they held feasts and festivals beneath their boughs. The world was not so dark then. We believed we had defeated the shadow forever…”
His gaze is distant as they walk along the path, his voice wistful. How much brighter he looks, lighter… until his expression grows heavy once more.
“… Then a darkness began to creep into the forest, an insidious invasion that I had not anticipated… How slight it was. Even the guard did not notice it until the woods grew sick…”
He looks back to Lyrian, to make certain he is keeping pace before he continues, directing them from the pathways and into a hall.
“… I led my people further north, to the river, and built this stronghold. I knew the darkness was growing, and, one day, we would need a refuge.”
There is the briefest lull, a sigh.
“There are secrets to the other realms. Protections that I cannot say… but for my people, we have only our wits, our strength, and our resilience… Nothing more. There may come a day when it will not be enough…”
“But it will be over my lifeless body.”
He looks forward again then, expression as indifferent now as it has been and yet… there is something to his eyes. Anger. Defiance.
“That is the reason for this place, so mesmerizing as it is. When I had it built, I designed it to be so with the trees of living stone and the pools of water. They will be a last reminder of our woods, should the time ever come when we may enter into them no more.”
“It is true. The Shadow ever-grows in the darkness. It corrupts the wood, and turns it against those who long have dwelt within it. It divides people, and sows greed and distrust and hate where once was peace and unity…”
For a moment, he says nothing more as though silenced by the sheer weight, the apparent hopelessness, of the current age.
“And yet… however dark the world may grow, whatever empires and lands may rise and fall, here, in this kingdom, we will endure.”
Just as he has done.
Through innumerable sorrows, through indescribable pain, through unspeakable horrors, still he does not fade or diminish as others of his kind have done. Whatever he has suffered, he will not be broken. He will persevere for his people, and he knows that, as long as he does, so too will they.
Of course, that seems not to help his own sleepless nights, only his determination to continue to rise every morning and see to those responsibilities and duties placed upon him.
These are two excerpts from a couple of threads with @dryadalismagicae‘s fabulous character Lyrian––check them out if you haven’t yet!––and these may honestly be some of my most favorite things that I’ve ever written on this blog because it just… summarizes everything about Thranduil as a character and in his own words.
Whether strictly from canon or with my own headcanons thrown into the mix, Thranduil has suffered so much, and yet despite everything, there is never a trace of that diminishment that has taken place with others.
Does he grow more wary and distrustful of strangers? Yes, but it is out of necessity to guard against the shadow and its far-reaching grasp, lest it find hold even within his own walls. But he is not tainted by it. He is not lessened by it. He does not falter or waver. He continues as always he has done, even without the protections possessed by the other realms, and I think that it something that has always drawn me to him as a character.
Thranduil is such a strong ruler. The greatest king to ever rule the elves of the Greenwood/Mirkwood, if we are to take Tolkien at his word––and ignore He Who Shall Not Be Named and the Wrath and Ruin that were the Hobbit movies for all but Lee Pace’s beautiful depth and portrayal of the character despite what he was given.
Despite his own suffering, which I would say is not slight, despite all of his losses, still Thranduil stubbornly refuses to be brought low by it.
Let other elves flee or fade. He will endure, and for that, his people will endure.
dryadalismagicae:
The only other elves Lyrian had ever witnessed were the tall figures he had seen (and marched alongside) when he was barely through childhood; the uncomfortable memories of that long war forever scarring his mind. But for that day or two before the fighting had started when he had shared camps with all variety of elven beings - he distinctly remembered being astounded by all of them. Graceful, wondrous, tall and godly beings in his eyes. He’d thought, for a long while, that it might have just been what the eyes of a child had seen - throwing everything into a fairytale. No - no he had been correct. Ethereal, the lot of them.
Emerlad eyes linger on the goblet (and the liquid) within his hands for but only a moment before taking a tentative sip; initially cautious, but most certainly enjoying the taste. Ah - how much better it was than the elderberry wine he had tasted once or twice in his life - there was no vulgar acidity that burned his tongue, only a smoothness. The smile cast across his face perhaps showed his enjoyment; though constantly did he remind himself not to drink too much.
“You suppose correctly, your highness.” Lyrian utters; he’d not been to those realms, no - but he hardly imagined he would have been welcomed as he had here; his connections to the past aided him and in truth, if they were more graceful and ethereal in those realms then he definitely wouldn’t fit in. If the elves of the realm he stood in were regarded as the wild ones then where did that place the dalish? Gremlins?
“My viewpoint, as a vast outsider, is likely different than others-” Lyrian begins, allowing himself to relax into his seat somewhat, aching bones relieved. “…The Dalish in comparison seem…” He couldn’t find the right word; barbaric? No - uncivilised? Some, probably, but not all. “Simple.” Just maybe that wasn’t the right word, either - but he let such a thing lie. It was evident that, when it came to the hierarchy of elves, the Dalish were right at the bottom.
“As a king, you are graceful, you are ethereal; but you are kind and you are just, also.”And to think, the dalish male had only been there but a few hours. A finger rose, idly brushing against the implanted ink upon his lip, wondering if he should have, just maybe, kept his mouth shut. Still - in for a penny, in for a pound; “I cannot imagine what you must face on a day to day basis - but your people so evidently adore you, trust you, even I can see that.”
A long pause; “Perhaps… I should learn to be quiet—”
The assessment given by the other, unsolicited, is a favorable one that he had not expected, and certainly not after so short a time within his realm, and even more so considering his treatment upon his arrival. And yet, such lofty praise is so freely given and without ulterior motive that he can see, and briefly does he find himself at a loss once more.
But as he looks upon him, his expression is somewhat softened by the words, and when at last he does speak, his voice holds no rebuke but instead a tone of reassurance.
“… I find no fault with your words or with your candor. I am often found too blunt in my own manner within the circles of higher elves. I do not play the games of politics and intrigue that are not uncommon to other rulers and other realms. I have not the patience and will not suffer them in my own… It is well that you speak your mind. You need fear no disapproval from me for it.”
“… Neither is there any reason to lament simplicity. Sometimes it is a blessing of its own too often overlooked by those who think themselves so great. I would wager that your kind have forgotten more in the span of one moon cycle than ever my own kind have sought to learn… or have had the aptitude to do so.”
dryadalismagicae:
Her curiosity sparks a small smile across his features; the first to ask a genuinely interested question over presumptions or mere ignorance. Indeed - quite a number of elves around today may not have known about the Dalish at all, much less anything they may have been known for.
“It is likely that what Lord Elrond knows is based off of Dalish practice-” He takes a moment to put aside whatever he had been idling with; “When clans roamed about they were always willing to share what they knew so the wider population may not suffer. Knowledge was passed on to any of whom would listen and wanted it - though even then perhaps fewer than should have ever took up the offer~”
“Entire clans used to be dedicated to learning and developing medicine - their advancements far beyond what I see lingering behind today.” And indeed, if more had listened - would they not be suffering less from disease? “The Dalish took a great many things to their graves.” And Lyrian himself bore one last, tiny outlet for both their tone of magic and their healing knowledge. “And it was only after the last clan was disbanded and we fell into the history books that some began to regret their deaths- most only miss something once it is gone. Suddenly, such a widely available expanse of medicinal help and aid was wiped from Middle Earth - and the folk who chose to take instead of listen were left only to lament their choice.”
“How terrible that is…”
How terrible, indeed, it is to think that any would have neglected and taken for granted such a resource, that any would so abuse or ignore the sufferings of an entire people, and yet, even the Little Sparrow’s bright optimism is not unaware of such cruelties, such injustice. No, the Woodland Realm itself had long been the target of derision and mockery among the other elven realms. Perhaps the prejudice had not been so detrimental as it seems to have been to Lyrian’s people, and yet it is felt all the same.
[ Though, she cannot but wonder… If they had not their King to stand resolute and immovable, strong, amidst all challenges and dangers, without aid or recourse, could it have been so for them as well? Might they have faded or departed or fallen? She knows the burden her King carries, how heavily it weighs upon him, at least enough to understand that it keeps him from resting or dreaming at night, instead leaves him to restlessly wander the halls. ]
And yet… this seems important to Lyrian, judging by his manner, by his words, and he is still here.
“If… If there were one who would listen… who would like to learn… would you… would you be willing to teach them?”

“You can always ask for help if you need to”
Your highness. Our new Dalish guest is quite inportant isn't he? I've heard that the Dalish were exceptional healers that built the blocks of what we know today. But there had to have been much more that wasn't passed on. Do you think our Dalish friend would talk to me about it? He does seem largely sheepish and frightened, I wouldn't want to intimidate him.
mentioned @dryadalismagicae
He does not feel it necessary to answer if Lyrian is important. It should be more than evident that it is so. After all, why else would the Elvenking have so readily invited him even into his own halls. But as the questioner continues, his head cants ever-so-slightly to one side.
“When approaching those of a more… timid nature than my own, I find that at times it is best to approach them as you would a child.”
Not that any, perhaps even his own son, would suspect that he knows how to do that either.
“It is best to keep your posture non-threatening and your voice soft, your movements to a minimum and, if you must move, do not do so of a sudden lest you risk startling them. But I see no reason that he would not discuss his knowledge with you. He seems quite fond of doing so. In fact, I believe one of my Guard have already approached him about the same. Simply remember to be respectful.”
“And remember that he is my guest and under my protection. I will not be further disgraced within my own halls.”
