This is a headcanon for a word meme.
Malik was never the one to indulge in lighthearted moments such as sharing laughter with his comrades. But there was a time when he used to as a child. He would often be found squealing with the other boys as they chased each other around, kicking up dust with their bare feet whilst disregarding the chiding of adult spectators who shook their head at their antics. Alas, the days of innocent childhood were fleeting… He grew to be a serious young man. Hardly anyone had witnessed even a mirthful grin from the assassin — save his younger brother, Kadar. Because of Kadar, Malik had always felt a sense of stability. Despite dwelling in a place where they learnt to provide peace and keep none for themselves; in a place where they are trained to hold their blade with an unmerciful hand… his younger brother provided peace and compassion their Order lacked. It was because of this, Malik could laugh.

After being granted several days to mourn the loss of his brother, the retired assassin quickly received news of his promotion. Possibly, he would have laughed with joy alongside his brother upon being given a promotion personally by Al Mualim, himself. But Kadar was not there, and this was no promotion…

Tazim shook the dust from his robes before he began to pull flag out of flag from his belt, “I brought the flags that got stolen.” he said, kneading the expensive material between his fingers as he held them out to Malik, “I…I think I got them all.” interacting with the Dai always made him nervous-he was afraid to say something out of place, something disrespectful.
"Ah." The dai beckons the younger closer; setting down the pipe, he straightened his laxed posture to accept the collected flags. Humming thoughtfully as he examined the fabric, he nodded once he was satisfied. "Very good, Tazim." As expected from his kin. Malik offered a faint smile as he gestured for the other to sit, calloused digits reclaiming the argila so that he could indulge in another breath of smoke. "Keep up with your progress and you will make a promising assassin."
"It’s uh…just me, Tazim." he said, peeking into the entrance of the building. His entrance was just a little less than graceful, novice greys tangling around his legs.
There is a flicker of recognition in the dai's eyes, the small furrow between his dark brows loosened ever slightly. "Tazim." he greeted the young man with a nod, lips closing over the tip of the hose as his chest gradually rose with the deep inhale that followed. The exhaled smoke escaped in ribbon-like strands, twisting in the air before disappearing. "Is there something you need?"
Hardened digits curl around the elongated stem attached to the vase as eyes fasten upon the figure standing aside the entrance. His index taps methodically against the mouthpiece. "Name yourself."
