AND a race one since the most affected regions will be Africa, Asia and Oceania
as a friend pointed out, this headline makes it sound like supply will be dwindling. supply is fine. people will be *priced out*.
this is fucking MURDER.
insulin has been mass produced (from animal extracts) since -1923-. slow acting insulin has existed since the ‘50s, and ‘human’ genetically engineered insulin (derived from E. coli bacteria) has existed since 1982.
insulin treatment for diabetes is not some new or ‘unproven’ treatment. according to beyondtype1, “Humalog rapid-acting insulin came on to the market with a list price of $21 a vial in 1997.” adjusting for inflation, a vial these days should cost about $34 at most. instead, it costs over $300. there is NO reason for it to be steadily gaining in price to the point that diabetics are unable to afford their lifesaving medication, other than the sheer inhuman greed of pharmaceutical manufacturers.
let me reiterate: life without insulin (for Type 1 diabetics in particular) is a slow and painful death sentence. the ability to treat diabetes is a relatively modern phenomenon that has allowed countless people to live full, healthy lives. we should be expanding full covereage and access to insulin to diabetics the world over, and it should be FREE.
Have y’all heard about Open Insulin Foundation?
“ We’re a team of biohackers with a variety of backgrounds, and skills, and relationships to insulin and diabetes from many cities and countries around the world, including Oakland, California; Baltimore, Maryland; Paraiba, Brazil; Dakar, Senegal; Yaounde, Cameroon; and Puerto Rico. We’re working to develop the first practical, small-scale, community-centered model for insulin production to make insulin accessible to all. We envision a world in which communities in need have local sources of safe, affordable, high-quality insulin, and where people living with diabetes and their communities can own and govern the organizations that produce the medicine they depend on to survive.
What We Do
We are creating an open-source (freely available) model for insulin production that centers on sustainable, small-scale manufacturing and open-source alternatives to production. We are developing protocols to produce short-acting (lispro) and long-acting (glargine) insulin, working on developing open-hardware equivalents to traditional production equipment, are researching sustainable regulation pathways to bring our insulin to the public, and are building capacities for local, small-scale manufacturing.
How Do I Participate?
Our work would not be possible without the support of volunteers, interns, and community advisors. We welcome people of all backgrounds from all over the world to bring their enthusiasm, time, connections, and experiences, both in life and in work. Our volunteers promote us on social media, build equipment, run experiments, write reports and blog posts, facilitate meetings, connect with other organizations and groups, meet with experts in the field, run virtual events, and contribute in designing tools, resources, and methods of all sorts.
Potential Partners
We welcome collaboration with other groups that share our mission―community labs, academic institutions, patient advocacy groups, and NGOs.
Donate
Your donation will help us get closer to our goal. With a healthy financial situation, we can pay for lab supplies, acquire lab equipment, recruit scientists, and pay for consultation fees for regulation and manufacturing experts.”

not to be intrusive but did you get vaccinated? longer/heavier periods are a newly noted side effect. good luck
t. also becoming the joker
I got the 2nd shot yesterday and I’d already had my period for 8 days. I posted about how I felt sick on fb and a friend of mine said they got a 19 day period after 2nd shot. I am going to require a blood transfusion. RIP
Today in “Things they didn’t bother telling us about vaginas”.

No published studies have examined the effects of vaccines on menstrual cycles.
If you are experiencing strange menstrual symptoms after receiving a vaccine, I encourage you to participate in this research study.
I’m not out here saying don’t get vaccinated, but I’m fucking sick of my body not being included and counted in medical research.
I didn’t have any of these effects, but passing along for anyone who did.
don’t just fill this out if your menstrual cycle changed. everyone who menstruates should fill it out. otherwise you get skewed results
important money tip bc it can never be said enough: when you order pizza or doordash PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don’t tip with your card!!!! tip in cash! some companies fully take away the tip and remove it from your paycheck, others tax it. we don’t ever get the full tip, which is really fucked up bc that takes money from you AND me and we both get screwed over!!! (in my case, $20 in tips were reported for my paycheck, except they only gave me $10, and i make barely above minimum wage so even that $10 i didn’t get is gonna screw shit up!!)
Holy shit, this is SO IMPORTANT. Whenever you can tip in cash, PLEASE do so. It makes a huge difference to service industry workers, who are already paid subpar wages and struggling against corporate labor practices.

Get Capitalism Out Of Healthcare
Healthcare capitalism deserves to be destroyed.
Not nearly on the same scale, but as a pharmacy employee I can also say that maintenance inhalers (symbicort, breo ect) (not your Albuterol rescue inhalers like ventolin and proair) are stupidly expensive as well, usually always breaking $300/mo and most insurances don’t do jack shit to lower the cost, where they typically do with insulin (provided you don’t fall into your insurance gap which is a huge issue).
Something diabetics, asthmatics and Eliquis/Xarelto-taking patients should remember is that you should always check the manufacture website for a coupon to piggyback with your insurance. (For reference, eliquis takers usually pay $150+/mo with insurance but the coupon can make it $10)
And especially with insulin users facing the coverage gap or with no insurance, your dr often gets free samples, and there are emergency programs through the manufacture websites.
Just like how hospitals all have probono programs if you hunt for them, insulin companies have similar assistance. That’s not to say that these prices aren’t criminal and morally corrupt, but in between hounding the legislation for change, make sure you’re aware of what’s available to you.
And as a side note- most people know about GoodRx, an app that is essentially a prescription coupon for if you don’t have insurance or your copay is insane. But RxSaver is another you should download. Pills are usually cheaper on this app. And don’t be afraid to take advantage of transfer coupons to help offset your costs now and again.
my father said to me once that one of the things he deeply regretted was not putting music on for his father while he was fading away. he told me that grandpa would just sit in his old armchair in the quiet, and not until after he’d passed did my dad think of how he could have played of his favorite classical music tapes for him so grandpa could listen to something while he still could. i was very young when this happened and not much older when my dad told me this, but it always stuck with me as something important.
my mother died at home in a hospice cot, slowly shutting down over the course of about a week. when she had stopped responding, i remembered what dad told me about wishing he’d played music for grandpa, and i put the radio on her favorite country music station and kept it on for her until she died.
daddy died in hospital. no cassette players, no decent radios. the day after he was brought in, i thought again of what he told me, and i bought a little portable bluetooth speaker. even though he never woke up, was never aware, i played music for him too.
there’s no real significance to sharing this, not really. my motivation is selfish, again: i just want to hope that someone might think of this when their loved one is stuck in silence somehow, and maybe they’ll play music for them, and they won’t have to regret not doing so. i want to hope it helps someone. and i want to hope that someone will remember my dad with me, even in just a “story i read on the internet” way.

Listen milfs and cougars are fundamentally different, and a mom can be a cougar. Milfs are women who are moms (or have mom energy) who are hot and rad. Cougars are older women who actively pursue younger people. Your hot 50 yr old mom who’s going after a 30 yr old is both a cougar and a milf. The other mom she’s friends with who is searingly attractive but not romantically active with younger people is only a milf. Your mom’s childless twin Vicky who likes the same dude is only a cougar.

“I have opinions now that I would’ve disagreed with 5 years ago. And that’s allowed. I have opinions now that I might disagree with 5 years from this time and that’s allowed. Just because you become an adult it doesn’t mean you stop growing and learning. And if you do - you fucking suck. We live in a society now where people are held accountable to things they said 10 years ago - as if that’s who any of us fuckin’ are anymore.”
