i must say, i am a huge fan of when a book is in the middle of a very exciting plot containing many interesting problems when out of nowhere for a few pages it's like, "hey by the way, real quick, here's a detailed explanation of the city's water filtration system! i'm telling you this for a reason and you should worry about it. anyway! haha okay back to the plot" and you just get to be Scared for a while

doing reading for my research project and i come across a paper that references fossil from "East Antarctica" and i'm like huh,,,, what do you mean east antarctica. east from where. how do you have east and west in a continent that Contains the south pole??

#I love a lot of things about the way this show turned out but maybe the very best one is how joan is a watson with limits     #I don’t think I’ve ever seen an adaptation where watson doesn’t sigh in exasperation and then put up with the abuse     #from day zero she’s laying down rules     #and she’s patient and forgiving and remarkably low-key     #(anyone who wakes me up before my alarm clock on the regular is getting a knife to the face)     #but she absolutely knows the difference between eccentricity and unreasonable behavior    #and is utterly able and willing to enforce boundaries     #and to call holmes out    #repeatedly.     #now that I think of it I don’t particularly find watson interesting or likeable in… any adaptation I’ve seen?     #and suddenly you have a holmes/watson dynamic that’s actually played as equal     #where 2/3rds of their interaction is negotiation     #(the other 1/3rd is mutual appreciation society and it’s so much better because of the negotiations)    #real friends don’t just love you     #they also challenge you to become a better version of yourself     #that’s the show.   (via smokeandsong)

And not only does Joan set limits but in canon Sherlock recognizes and adapts to them. He might shove the envelope but he comes to heel (and rightly so) when he is crossing a line and she calls him out on it. That is equally as important as her drawing lines because THIS is what a strong and respectful partnership is.

Elementary’s Holmes and Watson have such a healthy, equal and adorable partnership. I wub them.

Elementary is also great for making the Holmes/Watson dynamic a meeting of equals, and not one where Watson is constantly scrabbling to keep up intellectually or Holmes is some sort of fragile manchild who can’t be told “no” or “you can do better ergo you should, smart boy”.
