Dali's own claims about the symbolism in his work are built on the shaky foundation of Freudian mysticism. His work is visually striking, but he claims a greater importance than is likely present. He is not merely content with being an excellent and imaginative artist, he wants you to believe that there is some deeper meaning.

Basquiat, on the other hand, deftly manipulates the symbolism of his work to express his relationship with the black American experience, effortlessly detailing political angst, rage, love, consistency, and contradiction. His work is, in my opinion, equally as distinctive as Dali's but there is a deep humility to it.

To Dali, beauty is something that comes from work, from study. It is an esoteric, arcane thing that only the learned and special can touch.

To Basquiat, beauty is everywhere; it is scribbled on bathroom stalls and carved into old brickwork, we just have to look for it. He shows us how to see more beauty in the world, and I can't think of any higher praise to give an artist.
