Things I wish I had read in "beginner" sewing tutorials/people had told me before I started getting into sewing
You have to hem *everything* eventually. Hemming isn't optional. (If you don't hem your cloth, it will start to fray. There are exceptions to this, like felt, but most cloth will.)
The type of cloth you choose for your project matters very much. Your clothing won't "fall right" if it's not the kind of stretchy/heavy/stiff as the one the tutorial assumes you will use.
Some types of cloth are very chill about fraying, some are very much not. Linen doesn't really give a fuck as long as you don't, like, throw it into the washing machine unhemmed (see below), whereas brocade yearns for entropy so, so much.
On that note: if you get new cloth: 1. hem its borders (or use a ripple stitch) 2. throw it in the washing machine on the setting that you plan to wash it going forward 3. iron it. You'll regret it, if you don't do it. If you don't hem, it'll thread. If you don't wash beforehand, the finished piece might warp in the first wash. If you don't iron it, it won't be nice and flat and all of your measuring and sewing will be off.
Sewing's first virtue is diligence, followed closely by patience. Measure three times before cutting. Check the symmetry every once in a while. If you can't concentrate anymore, stop. Yes, even if you're almost done.
The order in which you sew your garment's parts matters very much. Stick to the plan, but think ahead.
You'll probably be fine if you sew something on wrong - you can undo it with a seam ripper (get a seam ripper, they're cheap!)
You can use chalk to draw and write on the cloth.
Pick something made out of rectangles for your first project.
I recommend making something out of linen as a beginner project. It's nearly indestructible, barely threads and folds very neatly.
Collars are going to suck.
The sewing machine can't hurt you (probably). There is a guard for a reason and while the needle is very scary at first, if you do it right, your hands will be away from it at least 5 cm at any given time. Also the spoils of learning machine sewing are not to be underestimated. You will be SO fast.
I believe that's all - feel free to add unto it.
Three things I wish I’d been told before I started sewing:
There is SO much more ironing than you think there will be. When you’re starting out, there’s much more ironing than you think there SHOULD be. You are likely to think the ironing is pointless, at best an unnecessary extra step, a nice to have. It is not. The ironing helps SO much. It makes your things look so good. Irons are the stern disciplinarians of fabric, and the best friends you have. If at any point, something is giving you grief, consider how you can iron it into submission.
There is so much more MATHS than you think there will be. Sewing doesn’t feel like the maths hobby. Knitting is the maths hobby. Crochet is the maths hobby. Double-entry bookkeeping is the maths hobby. Sewing? Sewing is the cutting round bits of paper hobby! WRONG. the only thing fabric loves more than behaving when you run hot metal over it is making you cry while you try to add numbers with decimal points in your head because your phone is on the table placidly playing your audiobook while you crouch on the floor staring at 2.7m of black velvet and wonder what you did to deserve this.
But you have a pattern, I hear you say. Surely I just need to get the amount of fabric the pattern says I need to make it up in my size and it’ll be alright? Yes. But many things can be maths and fabric is devious. One day you’ll find yourself going ‘oooh, I’ve got ~one and a half metres ISH at home, which will PROBABLY do it!’ and that may be true but you’d better hope you maths is right and the fabric has met its god (iron) recently.
More pins. How many pins do you have? Get more. Practice your maths on them. If you’re in a haberdashery, ignore the blandishments of fabric displays - fabric is always looking for some sugar daddy to take them home. Pins are your one true love. They will not love you back. They will take every opportunity to try and vanish, sometimes leaving some of their number behind to prevent pursuit by ambushing the feet of unwary searchers. But you need them, despite that. Get more pins.

While watching a DVD from the library my TV popped up a message saying to press a button if I wanted to watch this from additional providers.
It's never done that before so I looked it up and turns out Roku TVs have added all sorts of creepy things in the privacy section since I last checked.
One of which being they take screenshots from what you're watching and send them to third parties to identify it.
Fucking hell! Remember when every fucking device in your life wasn't a spy implanted in your home and working against your interests to try and sell your data? Remember how nice that was??
Remember when the TV was just a tool that would play the things you plugged into it?
Why must the future suck SO much?
TVs collect a huge amount of data. Here's how to use privacy settings to limit the surveillance on TVs from LG, Samsung, TCL, and every othe
A good rundown on what each brand of TV is up to and which settings you should turn off.

Feb - Apr 2025, different tree bark textures
This could have been a moment when the Democrats stood up as one in a great Spartacist moment of political resistance... instead we got Al Green with the bravery to not back down.
It amazes me how the National Park Service is the most vocal department against Fascism. Even the Democrats are a mumble when compared to these park rangers' adamant denouncement and exposing of this administration. Support our bravest federal workers who keep our world one worth living in.
Several documentaries publically treating Luigi Mangione as guilty before his trial even started got released over the past 2 months.
Here's the billion dollar companies behind them.
while this is a completely valid warning... i just want to take a second to remind everyone that you could literally say this about almost any movie, documentary or piece of media made since 2011. 90% of the United States media is controlled by 6 companies who create over 50% of the content.
and if you want to take it a step further because Vanguard and BlackRock were listed on the original graphic, their reach is lightyears beyond just media. BlackRock and/or Vanguard are among the three largest institutional investors for 505 out of 505 of the S&P 500. (100%). one or the other is the single largest institutional investor in 422 of these (84%). they, along with State Street, control about 23% of the votes of the S&P 500 single-class companies.
the truth is that virtually all corporate-backed media that you consume in 2025 from top to bottom is going to be subject to the oversight of the board of directors for one of these 6 mega billionaire-controlled companies. you should have that fact in mind basically at all times.
It’s not lost on me that Bernie Sanders is the only mainstream politician touring the country rn listening to Americans’ concerns, giving them hope that a better world is still possible. Not campaigning for President, not an election year, just inspiring swing town voters to use their power to incite change in their communities.
Bernie is 83yo, doing the work that every single Democrat could be doing simply in their own district. He’s packing overflow rooms by the thousands in suburban and rural towns, not “democratic strongholds”. It is possible to get through the next four years but the status quo Dems aren’t going to make that happen.
Imagine what a true progressive party could do for the US. Leftist policy is popular and wins elections. Bernie and others have told us this for decades. If you tuned out his message before, I have to wonder what side you’re truly on. Because his shtick has not wavered with everyday Americans.
Not me, us.
When I was in college in the 80s, I lived in Vermont. Bernie was the mayor of Burlington then. I had the opportunity to vote for him on his first run for Congress. Life happened and I didn’t get another chance until 2016 when I registered as a Democrat for the very first time in order to vote for Bernie in the primary. I have never agreed with every single thing he’s said or done (Shrub’s Iraq adventure was one notable thing), but I have always supported him.
Too few politicians of any stripe are willing to get out and have real, public conversations with their constituents. If your rep comes home on the regular and holds town halls or other events to listen to you, go and talk to them. Never let an opportunity pass you by. Real democracy is an ongoing conversation. Real leaders never ignore a constituent or a hard question. Public service should be a satisfying thing to do, but that doesn’t mean it has to be easy.
Luigi should be freed and Rittenhouse dumped in a lake
NYT has been discouraging reporters from sharing photos of luigi mangione - not due to concerns for his safety but to dissuade sympathy - and refuses to post his alleged manifesto in full. and today, they published an opinion by bret stephens about how brian thompson is the "real working class hero" of this story.
reddit deleted luigi's account, which was completely innocuous and consisted mostly of him giving out advice in health subreddits. they're also deleting any post that includes his alleged manifesto and banning users for sharing it.
luigi yelled that this was "an insult to the intelligence of the american people" while he was being dragged by police and news pundits are framing it as a deranged and violent outburst. news media are picking apart details of his life to paint him as a cold-blooded and mentally ill individual. even something as innocent as playing "among us" with friends is being framed as some insidious look into an assassin's disturbed psyche, ffs.
news media are also capitalizing on luigi's supposed "bizarre and impossible to understand" politics as an obvious way to paint him as a scary individual when the guy is... a centrist, at most. whose views are similar to those of your average college-educated white guy.
multiple news media also keep harping on about how luigi comes from a rich family. an obvious attempt to break the class solidarity that's been formed around this case by continuously trying to tell us "oh he's not like you guys" while ignoring the now pretty well-documented accounts of his multiple health struggles throughout the years.
and all this, and he hasn't even been found guilty of the crime he's allegedly committed. luigi is, as of right now, still innocent until proven guilty. and the news are trying to tear him apart because they obviously fear the symbol he's becoming for low and middle class america.
