A beloved Robert Frost poem is among the many creations that are (finally) losing their protections in 2019
“‘The public domain has been frozen in time for 20 years, and we’re reaching the 20-year thaw,’ says Jennifer Jenkins, director of Duke Law School’s Center for the Study of the Public Domain. The release is unprecedented, and its impact on culture and creativity could be huge. We have never seen such a mass entry into the public domain in the digital age. The last one—in 1998, when 1922 slipped its copyright bond—predated Google. “We have shortchanged a generation,” said Brewster Kahle, founder of the Internet Archive. ‘The 20th century is largely missing from the internet.’”
“We can blame Mickey Mouse for the long wait. In 1998, Disney was one of the loudest in a choir of corporate voices advocating for longer copyright protections. At the time, all works published before January 1, 1978, were entitled to copyright protection for 75 years; all author’s works published on or after that date were under copyright for the lifetime of the creator, plus 50 years. Steamboat Willie, featuring Mickey Mouse’s first appearance on screen, in 1928, was set to enter the public domain in 2004. At the urging of Disney and others, Congress passed the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act, named for the late singer, songwriter and California representative, adding 20 years to the copyright term. Mickey would be protected until 2024—and no copyrighted work would enter the public domain again until 2019, creating a bizarre 20-year hiatus between the release of works from 1922 and those from 1923.”
i speak french in public to my grandparents and to my boyfriend. people are surprised that im bilingual and say its cool and ask me to teach them some time
but when one of my classmates speaks arabic in public to her family, she gets strange and disgusted looks. no one asks to be taught arabic. no one says its cool that shes bilingual
its racism plain and simple
classically trained but we’ll still fuck ya up
behavioural and emotional patterns of living in abuse:
you spend most of your time shut in your room
you’re scared of footsteps approaching your door
you prefer not to come out unless there’s nobody home
when they come back you run to your room/safe place
you’re nervous and anxious if you have to spend time in presence of others
you try to get away from your home, you wish you could live somewhere else
your self-confidence is very low
you worry about making too much noise (have a feeling you’ll get yellet at or abused for it)
you try to move around as silently as possible and try to not be noticed by anyone
you feel uncomfortable and uneasy sitting at the same table as rest of family/housemates
you don’t feel like you belong here
you feel like a burden to your housemates
you don’t feel like you’re worth having around or supporting in any way
you don’t feel like anyone will ever love you or believe in you
you don’t feel like anything you do is good enough
you can’t stand someone watching you do things like cleaning or anything else you need to get done
you try really hard to still find good points about your life and cling to them
you strongly worry that you are somehow worse than anyone else
you feel like you’re behind on everyone and that you’re failing to live your life properly
you don’t feel like anything would have changed if you died, or even that it would be better if you did
if you’re experiencing most of this, you’re going through abuse. Your value isn’t in any way less than other humans, and you are absolutely not any kind of burden. You are human who is forced to live in a way humans aren’t meant to live. You are in living conditions that disable you from feeling happy, fulfilled, or even seeing yourself as a human being. You are suffering. What is being done to you is not okay. You deserve better than this.
A few I’d like to add
Intense paranoia when someone is looking over your shoulder while you using your phone/PC
Being startled by a knock on the door
Anxiety from receiving texts/phone calls from your house mates
Feeling that expressing your true thoughts will be invalidated
Not wanting to eat in front of your house mates

A new report details Les Moonves as vengeful following Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction.
It’s no big secret that Janet Jackson’s career suffered tremendously after Justin Timberlake tore off her bustier at the Super Bowl in 2004. But a new report describes Les Moonves, the chief executive of CBS, as playing a particularly vengeful role in the fallout. The Huffington Post’s Yashar Ali describes Moonves as “obsessed” with damaging Jackson’s career after interpreting the wardrobe malfunction to be a publicity stunt.
Moonves banned both Jackson and Timberlake from the 2004 Grammys, which aired on CBS that year, but eventually allowed Timberlake to perform after an emotional apology. Jackson, he perceived, was not “sufficiently repentant,” and he insisted that all Viacom properties (including MTV, VH1 and countless radio stations) stop playing her music.
The report goes on to describe Moonves’s reaction upon learning Jackson signed a book deal with Viacom-owned Simon & Schuster in 2011: “how the fuck did she slip through?” Moonves is currently on the outs at CBS following an extensive report by the New Yorker exposing multiple allegations of sexual harrassment against the executive. Jackson recently dropped her first single in years, “Made For Now.”

What they don't teach you in undergrad
The number one rule I wish they taught me in school was the reality of not becoming successful overnight. I think that’s what previous generations keep implying to totally fuck us over. “If you’re a hard worker, you’ll make it!” The reality is sometimes life has other plans. I strongly believe that everyone has a purpose and everyone contributes to the world in their own beautiful way. But sometimes you want to be a rocket scientist and find out you totally suck at physics. Sometimes you’re planning on getting your PhD and end up postponing it for years because you started a family. The first time I applied to medical school two years ago I didn’t make it. I thought I was the biggest failure out there. That’s until I realized that out of 4,000 applicants I was in the top 20% of people who actually got an interview. And because only 100ish people make it in each class, there were about 3,900 other people who felt the same way I did. No one tells you this shit in undergrad. Instead, you wake up on a daily basis looking at facebook and judging yourself based off of everyone else’s success. No one puts their problems online. No one puts “today I went to a coffee shop and reevaluated my life before binging on cookies and Netflix while on the verge of tears.” No. In the words of Dr. House: “everyone lies.” People aren’t going to post their greatest insecurities or fights with their spouse online for the world to see. Chances are, the person you’re jealous of for making it to (whatever place in life) is behind the computer screen wishing they were you. Life is funny that way. I can’t remember one professor who told us most people have to retake the MCAT or most people don’t make it their first year. You don’t just come out of college and have the world handed to you. And I wish most 20-somethings would realize how many others are just like them. If you didn’t make it to your dream college or graduate school or job, you aren’t stupid, and nothing is wrong with you. You’ve been lied to. Please know that your 20s are transitional years just like your teenage years were. You aren’t supposed to have everything together yet. Stop comparing yourself to more “successful” people your age. You’re going to do awesome things. Don’t doubt yourself.

A Crucial Archaeological Dating Tool Is Wrong, And It Could Change History as We Know It
One of the most important dating tools used in archaeology may sometimes give misleading data, new study shows - and it could change whole historical timelines as a result.
The discrepancy is due to significant fluctuations in the amount of carbon-14 in the atmosphere, and it could force scientists to rethink how they use ancient organic remains to measure the passing of time.
A comparison of radiocarbon ages across the Northern Hemisphere suggests we might have been a little too hasty in assuming how the isotope - also known as radiocarbon - diffuses, potentially shaking up controversial conversations on the timing of events in history.
By measuring the amount of carbon-14 in the annual growth rings of trees grown in southern Jordan, researchers have found some dating calculations on events in the Middle East – or, more accurately, the Levant – could be out by nearly 20 years. Read more.
