The implication that Pearl will be Rose’s daughter in the next incarnation is SOOO fascinating. Cuz up to this point she’s always been the older sister, the mother, the world-weary soldier. She’s old and tired and Rose is young and angry. Mothers weeping in chairs vs fire in the darkness. But the next incarnation Pearl gets to be the daughter. And she sounds so happy about it in Midnight. She knows the cycle is repeating, but she’s so happy to finally rest and be Rose’s little girl.

nothing in Ghost Quartet “really” “happens”, apart from Rose’s feelings of loss and grief.  coherence and resolution and plot aren’t the point. instead it’s all about how humans make narrative out of everything, from stars to bottles of whisky, and what it is that stories and storytellers can and can’t do: transform, preserve, restore, empower, heal.

and this, too, is why the audience join in with the music-making: to underline that stories exist in the telling; that they’re a collective act formed from the imaginations of listeners as much as performers.  the story is all of us, and we are all of us part of it
