the only thing wilder/funnier than the discourse over that movie is the actual real life historical story of how matilda kschessinska got with multiple members of the romanov family

SO our heroine Matilda was a famous ballet dancer with the Imperial Theater in St Petersburg, of the generation before Anna Pavlova and Vaslav Nijinsky and all those folks, and she had this love affair with the future Nicholas II before he got engaged to Alexandra, which lasted for about three years but then the moment Alexandra came on the scene he dropped Matilda like a hot potato

but she was not pressed and promptly started sleeping with his cousin Grand Duke Sergei…which lasted for a few years until she also started sleeping with their other cousin Grand Duke Andrei…as you do..

so Sergei and Andrei tried to make her pick between them but she wouldn’t. So they just arranged one of them would go out with her every Friday and the other one every Saturday. So she was both of their mistress and neither of them married because apparently they were just WILD for this woman

so this continued for like literally ten years until Matilda got pregnant and no one knew who the father was because again they were dating her two days in a row. So they got into a big fight about it outside of her house one Saturday morning but eventually things blew over and it went back to normal.

And then in 1917 when the revolution happened and the entire male Romanov line got decimated, somehow Matilda’s #2 boyfriend Andrei was the only one who managed to avoid getting killed and he and Matilda and the kid fled to England, where he finally married her and legally adopted her son. Because who cares if she’s a commoner when the whole rest of the aristocracy (and your competition!) is dead.

also another fact about matilda is that she opened up a ballet school in paris after she emigrated post-1917 and trained a lot of famous dancers in future generations! and she lived to be ninety-nine.
