A lot of libfems seem to think that “empower” means “makes you feel confident” or “results in something vaguely positive,” usually on an individual or relatively small-scale level, and have completely lost the meanings of even simply creating greater agency or societal power relative to others

like, i’ve heard the phrase “feel empowered” and…no, it’s not supposed to be an emotion

This is because liberal feminism has decoupled itself from the idea of actual material liberation. Instead it’s about freeing the woman from her own attitudes, because in the end liberal feminism largely places the onus of the problem on women themselves.

Femininity is a performance and it could be liberating for trans folks who are denied this form of expression. Gender (roles), on the other hand, the evil twin sister of femininity, limits femininity into the mater of you’re born this way so you’re destined to be this and do this. Femininity is not “inherently coercive and often physically harmful,” you are thinking of heteropatriarchy which defines femininity as the negating aspect of masculinity within the dichotomy of identities. These critiques are messy. Materialist feminists need to take a seat and learn a bit from queer of color critique and women of color feminism and cultural studies and critical gender studies tbvh, not everything can be neatly put into the (proven limiting) rhetoric of class.

femininity is not just “a performance,” it doesn’t just consist of the physical objects of makeup and high heels and whatnot but it’s also the modes of signification inscribed onto these objects and the forces that work to make them mandatory for women. it’s the ideals of thinness and weakness and smallness and the strictures not to take up space (physically and metaphorically) that are forced onto women. it is deeply tied into and inextricable from the oppressive institution of gender and it is inherently coercive.

femininity is not liberating for trans women. femininity is not liberating for women of colour. the fact that feminine presentations are simultaneously doubly mandatory and parsed as subversive for trans women / woc means that femininity is doubly harmful to us, not liberating. if you’re trying to go from “these groups of women are parsed as unintelligible / monstrous / inhuman under European conceptions of gender and are thus deliberately excluded from ideals of femininity” to “femininity is liberating for these groups of women” (even if all you’re talking about is feminine “presentation,” not femininity as a coercive ideal) then you have a lot of rereading of “queer of color critique and women of color feminism and cultural studies and critical gender studies” to do :/
