what's so "hard" about philosophy?

Philosophy is ‘hard’ because it’s difficult to think in a clear and thorough manner. And philosophy involves the systematic clarification of ideas and concepts. This is not easy stuff to do. It takes time, patience, passion, courage, and commitment. Much, even most, of our thinking is lazy and automatic. One of the greatest benefits to learning philosophy comes in the discovery of how much we take for granted. We think we know what we mean when we say things like ‘truth’, ‘morality’, 'science’, 'free will’, 'life’, 'time’, 'nature’, even 'reality’, but philosophy requires that we discard our culturally- and evolutionarily-instilled intuitions and judgments and explore the world from scratch. Nothing can be taken for granted. Moreover, philosophy requires us to confront many of the scariest questions of existence. Does life have meaning? When is life worth living? Is there a god? Is there an afterlife? What do we value? What should we value? How can we live a good life? Are we responsible for our decisions? Do we have moral obligations to those who are different from us, such as non-human animals and future generations? These are not easy things to do. Indeed, approaching these questions with lucidity and passion can be one of the most difficult endeavors in which a human can partake. I’ll let the philosopher Cornel West take it from here: 'It takes tremendous discipline, tremendous courage to think for yourself. W.B. Yeats said “It takes more courage to examine the dark corners of your own soul than it does for a soldier to fight on a battlefield.” Courage is the enabling virtue for any philosopher, for any human being. Courage to think. Courage to love. Courage to hope.’

The Perfect Explanation of Privilege – In One Powerful Punchline

“The Pencilsword” is a comic strip by Toby Morris, an illustrator from New Zealand. His most recent comic, “On a Plate” hits hard at the heart of the issues of concerning wealth and privilege.

How many times have you heard the “I’ve never been handed anything on a platter” argument in regard to social security and other social benefits?

Toby wrecks this argument by showing how two children can grow up, be loved and supported, and yet still have two very different outcomes.

I will reblog this whenever I see it because this is so relevant it hurts. Everytime I see it, I ma reminded that i am the girl on the right, and that it is going to take me 2-3 times as long and 2-3 times as much effort to make even a fraction of the progress my counterparts on the right will make.

That’s actually a really intetesting intpretation of it I hadn’t thought of. Most people seem to think Athena turned Medusa into a gorgon as punishment for defiling her temple, but thinking that she did so to protect her from being abused again is interesting and I like it!

Athena’s hands were tied. Yes, she was a powerful Goddess, but she was very much a woman in a “boys club”, and the true offending party (don’t think for a moment that Athena blamed Medusa for being raped in the temple, Athena knows better) held all the cards. There was nothing that Athena could do to punish the true criminal, and she was expected to punish Medusa by everyone else. What’s a Goddess to do when she cannot punish those who need to be punished and is expected to punish not only the truly innocent party, but her most beloved follower? Use that incredible brain power she had to protect Medusa at all costs, and of course the men would see it as punishment, to be have her beauty stripped from her and sent to live in the shadows. Medusa should have been KILLED for supposedly defiling the temple, whether she truly did or not, but she was given the gift of life, and the ability to protect herself and her daughters (who she bore thanks to Poseidon). This is why Medusa’s image was used to signify woman’s shelters and safe houses.

Medusa means “guardian; protectress”, and she was.
