GWR loco No. 6902 'Butlers Hall' @ Swindon Works - May 1961 by Frederick McLean Via Flickr: An old photograph (2" x 2") of accident damaged British Railways/Great Western Railway (GWR) steam locomotive No. 6902 being scrapped in 'A' shop at the Swindon Works. The works was opened in January 1843, the last BR steam locomotive it produced was 'Evening Star' in 1960, the last steam loco to come in for repair was in 1964, the works closed in 1986 with some work continuing into 1987 after which most of the site was cleared for redevelopment. Collett designed 'Hall class' 4-6-0 engine, built at the Swindon Works and new to GWR in Jul 1940. In Feb 1961 the locomotive was involved in an *accident in which the driver died, this is it being scrapped at Swindon Works just a few months later in the May. The accident damage can clearly be seen in the photograph. * "In the early hours of the 11th February 1961, the ex GWR locomotive 6902 Butlers Hall was heading the 10.23 p.m. York - Swindon express when it collided with the rear portion of a divided freight train and derailed. Tragically this resulted in the death of the driver of the express, Driver A. L. L. Jones, who was trapped on his footplate." From Mike Crabtree in the 'Railway Identification Group' on Facebook:- "Swindon ‘A’ shop because of the configuration of a single overhead crane lifting the whole locomotive, Darlington North Road also lifted locos using a single crane and its most definitely not North Road. Milford Haven engine/locomotive shed - Jun 1959 by Frederick McLean Via Flickr: An old photograph taken on a West Wales 'shed bash', of Milford Haven engine/locomotive shed (87Hs) in Jun 1959. The original single track timber shed was opened in 1863 by the Milford Railway then replaced in 1890 by a single track brick built shed. The line was absorbed by the Great Western Railway (GWR) in 1896, the shed was closed by British Railways (BR) in Dec 1962 and subsequently demolished. This is in a rail enthusiast old photo album, there is nothing on the photo reverse but the page is annotated "West Wales Tour, Milford Haven Shed, Two engines on - 3639 & 3654, 7 Jun 1959". Collett designed '5700 class' 0-6-0PT engines, built at the Swindon Works and new to the Great Western Railway (GWR) in late 1939. In 1948 the railways were nationalised, GWR becoming British Railways (BR) Western Region, 3639 was withdrawn from service in Jan 1963 (scrapped Sep 1963) and 3654 withdrawn in Aug 1965 (scrapped Feb 1967). Taken at Bridgeton Cross, on the left is the shelter/bandstand (aka the 'Bridgeton Umbrella' - 'The Toll'), the clocktower was made by George Smith and Co in 1874. The photo reverse is initialled by the photographer and negative owner "ADP" (A. D. Packer - David Packer), and with the date 29/9/60. No. 121 was a 'hex dash' phase III Standard car built at the Coplawhill Car Works, seating 24/38, running on a 7' 0" wheelbase truck, going into service in May 1919. It was modernised to phase IV in Feb 1929, then was scrapped in Jun 1960, being dismantled back at Coplawhill. The parts of the Glasgow tramways systems that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to trolleybus/bus operation closed in Sep 1962. Hastings Miniature Railway - No. 3007 'Firefly' - Sep 1950 by Frederick McLean Via Flickr: An old photograph dated 02 Sep 1950, of the 10 1/4" (260mm) gauge Hastings Miniature Railway engine No. 3007 'Firefly'. This is in a rail enthusiast old photo album, on the photo reverse is annotated "0-6-0 No. 3007 at Hastings, 2/9/50, unfortunately there is no photographer name. 'Firefly' history from Wikipedia:- "Firefly, built H.C.S. Bullock, in 1936 (as GWR 0-6-0PT No 3007); rebuilt 1945 by RHDR engineers as 0-6-0 tender locomotive. This engine is perhaps the one most closely associated with the Hastings Miniature Railway, having operated there from the opening of the line in 1948 until 1984, when it was sold to the Kerr's Miniature Railway in Scotland. Having been the principal engine at Hastings, it has retained that role (and the original number, 3007) in Scotland." 🚂 NOTE - Apparently Kerr's railway closed indefinitely on 11 October 2020. East Greenwich Gas Works engine shed - Mar 1951 by Frederick McLean Via Flickr: An old amateur photograph of a 'shed bash' to the East Greenwich Gas Works engine/loco shed in Mar 1951. The gas works had an extensive internal steam/diesel rail network, bringing in coal via a 'coaling pier' on the river, sending out coke and chemicals, as well as many internal rail movements. The network consisted of two narrow gauge and one standard gauge railway, from 1900 it was joined via a spur to the Angerstein railway. LMS (ex GSWR) loco No. 14116 c1925 by Frederick McLean Via Flickr: An old photograph of London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) engine No. 14116, with driver and fireman at an unknown station. The reverse has no information on, if you know who the photographer was please message me and I will credit them. This was a H. Smellie designed class 119 4-4-0 engine, built at the Kilmarnock Works, and new to the Glasgow and South Western Railway (GSWR) in Jun 1882 carrying number 119, changing to 119A in Jan 1910, then to 700 in Jun 1919. After grouping of the existing railway companies in 1923 into 'the big four', the GSWR became part of the LMS, in 1924 they renumbered it 14116. The locomotive was withdrawn from service in Dec 1931, then I assume was scrapped, although I could not find the date/place. If there are any errors in the above description please let me know. RPPC of Great Central Railway loco No. 969 @ Trafford Park by Frederick McLean Via Flickr: An old RPPC of Great Central Railway (GCR) steam locomotive No. 969 outside Trafford Park engine/locomotive shed (13A). This real photo postcard was produced by 'F. Moore's Railway Photographs' of London, in the very early 1900s. It is annotated with "outside Trafford Park shed". No. 969 was a X4 class 4-2-2 engine, built in the Gorton Works, and new to GCR in Aug 1900. In 1923 the existing railway companies were grouped into 'the big four', the GCR becoming part of the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) who renumbered the engine as 5969 in Aug 1924. The locomotive was withdrawn from service in Jul 1926, then scrapped back at the Gorton Works. The location is unknown, but it did spend most of its working life allocated to the Tyseley shed/depot, so perhaps it was taken in that area. The photo is stuck in a rail enthusiast's old album, unfortunately there is no date, location, or photographer name. No. 5927 was originally a C. Collett designed Hall class 4-6-0 engine, built in the Swindon Works, and new to GWR in Jun 1933. The station closed to passenger traffic in 1966 and was demolished the following year. The photo reverse is annotated with "Glasgow (Buch St) Stn. Eng No 60031 on 1.15 P.M. Dundee train. 6/4/63". The locomotive was withdrawn from service in Oct 1965, then scrapped in the December at Campbells, Shieldhall, Glasgow. Fowler designed class 3P, 2-6-2T engine, built at the Derby Works and new to the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) in Feb 1931, carrying No. 15525, renumbered as 26 in May 1934. In 1948 the railways were nationalised, becoming British Railways (BR), engine No. 26 becoming No. 40026 in Oct 1948. LMS (ex G&SWR) class 14 4-4-0 loco No. 14374 by Frederick McLean Via Flickr: An old photograph of locomotive No. 14374, unfortunately there is no information on the reverse so date, location, photographer are unknown. Leaning against the cab footplate is a 'long slice', used to clear out the firebox. No. 14374 was a J. Manson designed class 14 4-4-0 engine, built at the Kilmarnock Works and new to the Glasgow and South Western Railway (G&SWR) in Nov 1908, carrying No. 157, being changed to No. 346 in Jun 1919. After grouping of the existing railway companies in 1923 into 'the big four', the G&SWR became part of the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS), in 1924 they renumbered 346 to 14374. It was withdrawn from service in Oct 1932, but I cannot find any details of where/when it was scrapped. If there are any errors in the above description please let me know. Fowler designed class 4F, 0-6-0 engine, built at the St. Rollox Works in Glasgow and new to the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) in Oct 1925, carrying No. 4197. In 1948 the railways were nationalised, becoming British Railways (BR), engine No. 4197 became No. 44197. The locomotive was withdrawn from service by BR in Sep 1964, then scrapped in January of the following year by Cohens of Cargo Fleet. The steam numbers are hard to make out but I think they are, from left to right, Nos. 47643, 47250, and diesel-electric D5149. The locomotive was withdrawn from service by BR in Oct 1966, then scrapped in June of the following year at 'Cashmore's Great Bridge' scrapyard. ---------------------------------- No. 47250 was a S. Johnson designed class 2441, 0-6-0T engine, built by the Vulcan Foundry and new to the Midland Railway (after grouping the London, Midland & Scottish Railway) in Jun 1902, carrying No. 2771, being renumbered to 1950 in 1907, then 7250 in 1934. In 1948 the railways were nationalised, becoming British Railways (BR), engine No. 7250 became No. 47250. The locomotive was withdrawn from service by BR in Jun 1965, then scrapped in the December. ---------------------------------- No. D5149 was a class 24, Bo-Bo wheeled diesel-electric locomotive, built by the Derby Works and new to BR in Feb 1961. Deltic class 55 No. D9019 @ Doncaster Stn. by Frederick McLean Via Flickr: A photograph of British Railways (BR) diesel locomotive No. D9019 at Doncaster Station. I think this was taken in the early 1960s as it does not appear to be carrying its 'Royal Highland Fusilier' name plate. The photo is stuck in a old rail enthusiast album, unfortunately there is no date or photographer name, but they do appear to date from early/mid 1960s. Locomotive No. D9019 was an English Electric, class 55 (Deltic), Co-Co wheeled engine, built by the Vulcan Foundry and new to BR in Dec 1961 carrying No. D9019. In Sep 1965 it was given the name 'Royal Highland Fusilier', Nov 1973 it was renumbered 55019, was withdrawn from service in Dec 1981, and was then purchased and preserved by the 'Deltic Preservation Society' (DPS). From the DPS site:- D9019, later renumbered 55019, was a British Rail Class 55 diesel locomotive that entered service in 1961 and was based at Haymarket depot in Edinburgh. It was withdrawn in 1981 after being the last Deltic hauled service train. It was the first Deltic to operate a train in preservation and has since undergone extensive overhaul and refurbishment. LB&SCR Terrier Class loco 'Ewell' No. 60 by Frederick McLean Via Flickr: An old photograph of London, Brighton & South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) 0-6-0T tank locomotive 'Ewell' No. 60. Officially a 'A1 class' engine, it and the other 49 of the class were more commonly known as 'Terrier class' engines. The photo reverse is annotated with "at Littlehampton", but there is no photographer name, if anyone knows who the photographer was please message me their name so I can credit them. Thanks. Because of the condition of the engine I assume this was taken towards the end of its service. No. 60 (later renumbered 660) was a 'Terrier class' 0-6-0T engine named 'Ewell', designed by William Stroudley, built by the Brighton Railway Works, and new to the LB&SCR in Nov 1875. The locomotive was withdrawn from service in Dec 1902 (another source says Jun 1903) and sold to George Cohen & Sons, it was later broken up at their Redhill scrapyard.
