Summary: What starts out as a relaxing picnic outing with your friends spirals into disaster as Sans gets kidnapped by a group of strange skeletons. Can you save your friend?
It was a beautiful sunny day, the kind where the sky is clear of any clouds and the breeze was strong enough to keep the heat from beating into your skin. Frisk was staying the weekend over at Sans' and Papyrus' house. Oh, and you suppose your house now, too.
It's already been a few months since moving in but it still felt unreal to think of their home as yours, too. Everyday since leaving your mother's house felt like a dream. Sometimes you pinched yourself just to reconfirm that this was all real. You felt lighter, your cats were happier and less stressed. And it was all thanks to a kind offer from a friend. Your friend, Sans.
You remembered when you first met him over a year ago, just starting out at your new work place since the last company you worked for went out of business. It was one of the new pharmacies opened up that catered to both humans and monsters alike. You were the first (and still the only) human technician to start working there and were working the register when Sans showed up at your counter to inquire about cold medicines for a human child. For such questions, you had to call over a pharmacist but after the pharmacist consulted him on OTC options, he lingered to inquire more on you. Most humans tended to avoid areas heavily trafficked by monsters and so to many of the customers passing through that pharmacy, you stood out. You became the talk of their community and many came in just to see who this new human was, even when they didn't have any prescriptions or groceries to pick up.
Likewise, it took some time for you to grow accustomed to monsters as part of the world. They had emerged from the Underground just over a year or so prior to your employment there, shaking the world over with their appearance. No one in your town or the ones nearby could have guessed that there was an entire other intelligent civilization hidden underneath the nearby mountain.
You always tried your best to get along with the customers, constantly worried if your voice came across as too monotone or your expressions too subtle. Whenever Sans was around, it felt like all your interactions with any other monsters went so much better. He had this knack for making conversation run so smooth, at times it made you a little jealous how easy he made it look. And over time, you both got closer. He always picked up on the stress that you tried to keep bottled, eventually weaseling it out of you that your home life wasn't the best. Some days you could've sworn your mother secretly hated you. It often felt like you weren't loved at home but making the jump to living alone was hard to fathom as an option when you had cats to care for. There was absolutely no chance you could leave them behind or re-home any of them, you would rather weather your misery than part ways with them. They were the only ones in that house that helped to keep your spirits up, they have been there for you in your darkest of times. They never judged you like other humans did, they always treated you as someone worth affection, unlike your mother. Ever since you were a kid, you always felt you related more to animals than you could ever do so with humans. Some days, you wondered if you were even human to begin with.
Other people were hard to fathom, they didn't always speak the truth to you and frequently your sister would terrorize you. You often felt like a freak in your own family. How did it come so naturally to everyone else to be people, to interact with others so easily, to pick up on their subtle cues and multitude of micro-expressions.
Despite the lifetime of alienation you've felt from your own species, you somehow felt more at home among monsters. To them, the most stand-out feature of you was simply the fact you were human. It was weirdly affirming even though you technically did feel like an outcast in yet another way. But you didn't remain that way for long. Somehow, their community welcomed you with open arms. Any eccentricities you may have possessed were accepted, especially when many monsters had so many of their own. You may have looked completely alien from them but at the essence of who you and they were, there was this sense that you all were kindred spirits. They made you feel normal, it was refreshing.
Today, Papyrus and Frisk got it in their heads that it would be good to eat lunch outside. With the pair's combined enthusiasm, this notion soon snowballed into a full picnic- style outing to the nearby park. You and Sans simply went along with it, with you taking on the burden of the blanket and one of the baskets while he managed to travel empty-handed.
"How do you manage to weasel your way out of manual labor every time?" You shot a sidelong glance Sans' way while adjusting your grip on the basket.
"I don't know what you're talking about." There was a playful glint in his eye sockets as he threw back a sidelong glance of his own, taking a swig from a ketchup bottle.
You narrowed your eyes at him. "Uhuh." You're tone was anything but convinced.
"THIS LOOKS LIKE A GOOD SPOT TO SIT." Papyrus' voice brought both of your attention back up front. Both him and Frisk stood several paces ahead of you two, waving you guys over after having set their own baskets down. You hustled over while Sans maintained the same pace and Papyrus took the blanket from you, setting to work on laying it over the grass with Frisk before beginning to unpack the contents of the three baskets.
Sans finally caught up and scanned the wide field. "This is a pretty good spot."
Frisk gives a thumbs up while you nod. "It's nice that no one's here to disturb us." You remarked, glancing around. "Granted, it's pretty distant from the main hubs."
"THAT IS PRECISELY WHY I CHOSE THIS AREA. IT IS THE PERFECT PICNIC SPOT!" Papyrus place a hand over his chest, striking a pose. Somehow, the breeze blew at the exact right moment to lift his scarf behind him, flowing in the air like a cape. You silently chuckle.
You all sat down on the gingham blanket once Papyrus and Frisk finished arranging everything. A comfortable silence fell over your group as you all began filling your own plates from the menagerie of food you and Papyrus prepared.
Eventually, once you all had your fill, Frisk suggested a game of frisbee. You and Papyrus stood up to go play with them while Sans laid back in the grass, closing his eye sockets and soaking in the rays of the sun.
The three of you lost track of time as you got really focused on the game. Sans fell asleep at some point.
Slowly, four shadows fell over his sleeping form. He blinked open his eyes sleepily, barely having time to register who stood over him as one of the figures grabbed him.
Yours and Papyrus' heads snapped in Sans' direction at the sound of magic being cast just in time to see one of four strange skeletons tossing him over their shoulder, having been tied up.
"WAIT, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" Papyrus began running over.
"Hey- wHAT THE FUCK!" You weren't far behind, sprinting toward the four strangers holding your friend hostage. One of them turned away, stepping forward to slice a portal in the air with a curved blade.
"NO, STOP!" Papyrus yelled, reaching his hand out toward them. You'd never ran so fast before, overtaking the tall skeleton, barreling forward. The one who opened the portal stepped through it, the others beginning to follow.
"FUCK- NO, STOP!" You willed your body to run faster, only a few paces behind them, reaching out toward Sans. His eyelights locked onto you and his brother as he disappeared through the portal.
"SANS!" Papyrus called out in a desperate bid for something, any kind of miracle to happen, as he kept running. The portal began shrinking.
You dove into the portal right before it could close fully. Last thing you heard from the other side before it closed was the sounds of Papyrus and Frisk yelling out both your names.
Time crawled to a standstill, wind whistling past your ears, gaze locked forward on Sans and the stranger that held him hostage. Some of their hoods got knocked down by the wind. The one holding your friend had a jagged hole in the side of his skull.
It almost felt like you were flying, so high above the ground in who knows where after you dove after them, no regard for how you might land. They leapt through the open air like it was nothing, like their group had done this thousands of times. Your eyes stayed locked on Sans'. Their leader opened another portal as you began to lose momentum, feeling the pull of gravity begin to tug you downward.
Hand outstretched, reaching out to Sans. His eye sockets widened as he watched you plummet from his sight as he went through the next portal. There was a sickening crunch from the other side before it closed behind him. His smile shrunk.
I've decided to start writing out this very self-indulgent AU fanfic (that's spawned from who knows how many hours of daydreaming both at home and at work lmao) and post it. I plan on making it a longer fic and also decided this would be a good jumping-off point to get back into the groove of writing fanfic before I feel confident enough to truly start writing out my out AU fanfics. I also have an AO3 account so I'll be posting this fanfic there, too! It's under the username OldCrowWitch. Come to think of it, I need to post the drabble I wrote early this year there, too. Sharing longer fics is pretty new to me but I'm tired of keeping this all in my head! I want it to be real to more people than just me! Anyways, I plan on posting new chapters for this on Thursdays just to make it simple to check for updates for both here and on AO3
Okay so I knowwwwww I said I'd work more on the God of Balance AU (AND I WILL!) but I just got sucked back into working on another UTMV AU I've had sort of on the back burner for a while lololol This one honestly has more of an outline for its narrative than the God of Balance AU and my thoughts have been consumed on ideas I've been wanting to add to the outline for this one in particular!
It's another reader-insert AU, fair warning, but I have noticed that when I do come up with reader-insert centered AUs that they always tend to be focused moreso on narratives rather than pure romance or anything. Like, so much platonic bonds going on. I do have my favs I enjoy self-shipping with but self-shipping tends to go straight out the window when I start working on world building and lore and it's kind of hilarious to me. I'm all like "this skele-man is so handsome ❤️❤️❤️" and then I start to speculate on realistic ways to incorporate myself into the world to make it make sense and suddenly it's like "LOCK IN! NO LOVE, NO SEX, UNTIL WE FIGURE OUT LORE!" And then I forget about romance and it's like "oh shit, I kinda wanted the reader-insert to have someone???? Is that a lost cause???"
Anyways I call this other AU the Attack Dog AU (name's kind of a work in-progress, feels clunky to me but yeah) and it pretty much brings a bunch of AUs into one world and I have so much fun coming up with ideas to further my outline for the narrative for this story! Figuring out how to organically build the different AUs into this world as separate kingdoms has been an interesting challenge that started with a different AU I previously had been working on like a year or two ago but sort of went on the back burner because I got sidetracked lmao. That one honestly did have more of a definite love interest in mind but I don't think my pendulum of fixation is ready to swing back at that AU, unforch! It was a cool world I was building and I definitely want to eventually return to working on that one's narratives!
Funnily enough, a lot of these AUs are ones I moreso prefer to write for rather than drawing anything out in comic form because that is so much more work 😭 If I do draw anything for my AUs, it'll probably be standalone artworks and short comics (if I end up having ideas I'd like to make into comics anyways. I made some comics for other fandoms back in high school and early college but imma be honest. I'm a little rusty.....)
God! I don't know if I wanna start gushing about the Attack Dog AU or wait until I actually get the outline finished and start writing chapters! At this present time, it's feels kinda like my baby ❤️ But I know I wanna share my ideas and story with the community someday! Figuring out how to get back into my groove when it comes to writing feels a little daunting! But I have missed it, it's like reuniting with an old friend
Also I've been reading up on the lore of other AUs like Horrortale and Something New and stuff because I wanna do these characters justice when writing them! I've been enjoying catching up on all these classic, more established AUs :3 Fanon is fun but I also want a better understanding of the OG materials and their respective characters, y'know?
I promise I'll be working more on my AU and writing fanfic and drawing some fun art! I am currently focused on completing my continuing education credits for my job! But I am still rotating skeletons in my head! I promise!
I'd say these sketches I made a little while ago give a decent idea of the sort of features I envision for reader in her true form for the God AU I wrote a drabble for yesterday. More so the monstery features of the halo and the floating eyes and wings and such. Since anything I end up writing for the AU will be a reader-insert, I like to leave the appearance up to anyone's interpretation lol. Think of whatever appearance I draw her with as placeholder. Part of the lore of the AU is that her appearance is subject to change in each reincarnation. She lived many lives and looked many different ways, even was many different genders and sexes.
In her true form, I want to draw her in an unsettling way ^_^ I definitely take inspiration from Biblically accurate angels, they're some of my fav kinds of creatures! Also demons lolol (I love all monsters tbh)
I wanna design the Gods of Entropy and Order next. In her original AU, they were her closest friends and confidants. But the other gods in the pantheon saw her friends as a weakness to exploit against her and thus fed the God of Entropy a fake prophecy that he will always be destined to kill her, such is his role in orchestrating chaos. And that the God of Order must protect her despite the fact he will inevitably fail at some point.
You Get Mad at Nightmare's Crew for Making You Late For Work
This is more so a drabble than anything lol. This scene unfolded in my head while I was at work and I just needed to write this down! I initially intended to write the reader as more intimidating when she starts ranting at everyone about missing work but the writing turned out so comical and I didn’t exactly know how I could insert intimidation without it becoming even sillier than it already was so you get this lmao!
This is mainly for this self-insert/reader-insert AU that’s been stewing in my head for at least a few months now. The basic idea is that the reader is actually a god that’s been reborn into their current AU that happens to be one free of magic and monsters. I’ve got a lot of lore that I’ve been coming up with here and there over time when I daydream!
Reader was originally born so long ago in her original AU within a whole pantheon of gods. But lots of drama happened and her soul began on a journey of reincarnation across the universe. In each life she starts off with zero knowledge of the truth of her existence and she can only begin realizing her abilities and return to her role as a god only once she remembers who she once was. The catch being that the other gods from her old pantheon want her dead before she can begin realizing her full potential since she used to be the enforcer of balance within their universe, thus preventing any of them from expanding their power and influence beyond what she deemed acceptable. They’ve been behind all her early deaths in previous lives. She originally existed in a triad with two other gods, the God of Entropy and the God of Order.
This is the life in which she finally returns to power and it was all because Error found her in this magicless, monsterless AU and deemed her some sort of anomaly or outcode that had to be dealt with. At that point, she’s already an adult in her late 20s. He basically forcibly drags her from this AU and through the multiverse and after she’s exposed to the multiverse and a lot of the other guardians is when she finally begins to remember who she once was, as well as the truth of her existence: that she is a god and she needs to return to her proper role.
In a way, she’s somewhat appreciative of Error despite his initial intention of destroying her lol Happy accident, I suppose!
Anyways, I hope you guys enjoy this short story! I’m not sure how I wanna go about expanding further on this AU, in terms of sharing it with all of you! But I definitely think there’ll be some art in the future for it! I wanna properly design the Gods of Entropy and Chaos! I’m especially excited to cement the design for the God of Entropy hehe! I probs will end up writing more short fics for this AU if not a longer fic. I’m not sure, I’d love to hear what you guys think! I’m just happy to be getting more into writing again :3 And I love this fandom, there’s so much creativity! I love all your works! God, you guys are so cool!
It’s the early afternoon and you’ve just started driving to work. You’re only 5 minutes from your house out in the woods when your phone starts ringing. Typically you wouldn’t answer your phone while driving since you have an older car and therefore no hands-free features but something in your gut was telling you to pick it up. So you extract your phone as best as you can while maintaining focus on the back road, all the while the ringing never ceases. From your periphery, the caller ID reads “Dream” and you heave a deep sigh and answer before putting your phone on speaker. Immediately, your ears are met by his voice with the background noise of a fight clearly ongoing.
“Yo, what’s up?” You try to speak loud and clear for him on the other line as you continue driving.
“(Y/n)! Nightmare’s gang is trying to infiltrate into your world! We need you here, quick!” Dream manages to yell into the phone while holding off some unknown opponent wherever he is.
“Wait, wait, what?!” You slam on your brakes without thinking, cursing yourself for doing so yet greatful that you’re on a road no one else ever travels. “What do you fuckin’ mean, where are you right now?”
“They opened a portal in front of your house, I don’t know how much longer we can keep them from stepping through!”
“Son of a bitch!” You somehow execute a flawless u-turn before speeding back down the road you just traversed. “I have work soon, why are they invading my world now?!”
“We’ll send Ink to retrieve you!” Dream’s voice suddenly gets distant yet you still can hear him yelling out at his opponent while weapons clash.
“Hold on, I’m not far-” You yelp as a portal opens from the passenger’s seat and the top half of Ink emerges from it.
“Come on, let’s go!” Ink grabs your arm but you push him away by his face.
Dream calls your name out to his phone a few times before letting out a frustrated growl. “She hung up!” He yells out in frustration as he barely manages to dodge yet another of Nightmare’s attacks.
“Waitwaitwaitwait, don’t fucking teleport me now, I’m driving a moving vehicle, I’m not far! Get! GET!” He yells out as you shove him back into the pool of ink spawned on the passenger seat. Mercifully, it dissipates and you return your attention to the road. Dream is still yelling on the other end of the call. You mutter a string of the choicest of words under your breath before managing to hit the ‘end call’ button and focusing entirely on speeding back home as safely as you can.
Ink tumbles out from a blackened pool in the ground near them. “Ouch!” He staggers to his feet, retrieving Broomie from the ground and shaking himself off. Killer leaps at him and he sidesteps his attack at the last second before yelling out to Dream and Blue. “I think she’s on her way!”
In a split second, it felt like they were all in freefall as a giant tentacle swept across the battlefield and slammed into everything in its wake. Friend, enemy, no active combatants were spared as it drove forward and forced everyone through the wide portal ripped into the veil between worlds. Everyone landed unceremoniously onto the lush grass in front of your home, with Nightmare being the only one given the chance to simply walk through the portal before it closed behind him.
He was openly and viciously laughing at them. “You really think that newbie could possibly clean up your failures on her home turf?” He stood over Dream, staring down at him. “She may be a god but she’s still very green. Has she ever been in active combat? Practiced her magic?” He chuckles mostly to himself.
Killer is back to chasing after Ink while Dust and Horror return to fighting against Blue, who seemed to be struggling to keep them from advancing anywhere near your house.
Nightmare’s head snaps up as he’s hit with a wave of virulent rage that draws nearer. Dream flinches where he stands as his head snaps in the same direction as Nightmare’s. From the driveway, a car comes screeching to a halt in front of the house. The engine idles and turns off.
The fighting pauses as everyone turns in the direction of the car. The driver’s side door opens and you step out. A fresh wave of rage nearly knocks Dream over while Nightmare is positively beaming, looking refreshed. Your eyes lock onto them as you start marching towards everyone, not even bothering to shut the car door behind you.
“Are you seriously fucking kidding me?” You break the silence.
“So glad you could finally grace us with your presence, fledgling god.” Nightmare’s voice is dripping with sarcasm as he turns to fully face you.
You pull off your scrub top and toss it aside along with your overshirt before beginning to shift into your true form. The transformation happened so fast, one moment you looked mundanely human. Blink, and the next you were upon them all in all your glory.
Eyes floating around you in circular rings, wings that seemed to sprout from your back without staying connected by physical muscle to your form. Blackened flesh charring the extremities of your body in a gradient up your limbs. Hair floating around you as if you were submerged in water, a crescent-shaped halo above your head that almost appeared as horns depending on the angle someone looked at you from. Magic thrummed in your veins, iridescent through your flesh even from a distance.
Disembodied arms manifested all around everyone while with a flick of your wrist, you sent a heavy, glowing chain above all their heads to slash through the air behind them, ripping a portal into the fabric of the universe. The hands were all over everyone immediately, caging them in the hundreds as everyone started yelling.
“Hold on, why us too?!” Ink yelled out but you barely acknowledged the statement as you leapt forward, willing everyone through the portal.
Everyone’s yelling and Dream loses count of how many portals you rip open and send everyone through, chasing them on their heels in dogged pursuit. It must’ve been half of the multiverse at least before everyone crashed down in a heap in front of Nightmare’s castle. You landed before them, the ground shaking, before standing straight and huffing, steam escaping from your mouth.
“What the hell just happened?” Killer is up on his feet, looking bewildered as he staggers in place, almost dizzy. He barely dodges the tentacles that fly past him in your direction.
You simply step to the side as they strike the ground where you once stood, all the while staring Nightmare down as he storms towards you. Dream almost gets knocked over by the rage rolling off of his brother in turbulent waves. He hangs back, looking back and forth between you and Nightmare as the two of you stare each other down. The air between you is electrifying.
“I’m almost impressed by your audacity, fledgling.” Nightmare towers over you, seething with barely contained rage. He barely moves as you slap your right hand across his face in a split second.
“Don’t ever step onto my territory again, motherfucker, I will leave you a shadowed silhouette on the pavement.”
“COME AGAIN, YOU INFANT-” Nightmare seems to grow in size with his rage.
Dust is hanging waaaaaaaay back near the castle entrance while Killer and Horror are stuck gawking at the exchange happening in front of them. Blue stays near them, his eyes as wide as dinner plates.
Ink let’s out a low whistle. “She slapped him!”
“Hold on, let’s try not to be rash-” Dream rushes over to them, his hands up in an attempt to placate or perhaps separate the two if things escalate any further.
You shove your finger in Nightmare’s face, getting up close and personal. “Don’t you even fucking start! I was literally just on my way to work! I’m probably gonna have to either call in sick or let them know I’ll be an hour late or something BECAUSE OF YOU, MOTHERFUCKER.”
Nightmare pauses, his mind taking a moment to process. “Work? What???” He narrows his eye at you. Dream looks lost as he settles his gaze on you.
“I HAVE A JOB, YOU DIPSHIT! I’M GONNA BE LATE BECAUSE OF YOU, ASSHOLE!” You throw your hands into the air, huffing and looking ready to kill someone.
Nightmare shrinks in size a smidge, gesturing to you. “You… Have a job? And… you’re mad you’re late?” He grips his chin pensively.
“What?! What’s so fucking weird about that?! Why are you guys looking at me like that?!” You’ve backed off from Nightmare, your eyes bouncing from person to person. Dust has returned to stand beside Killer and Horror, his hoodie tilted in question.
Nightmare almost laughs. “You’re a god, though? That doesn’t seem necessary.” He shoves his hands into his coat pockets, openly chuckling in front of you.
“Well I have a life outside of this shit!” There you go again, gesturing wildly and throwing your arms up. Suddenly you’re back in Nightmare’s face, shoving your finger in his chest. “If you fucking make me miss work again, so help me god, I will hunt you for fucking sport!” Your words come out in a harsh whisper.
Nightmare’s not even trying to hide his laughter.
“Stop fucking laughing!”
He laughs harder.
“Stop that! Don’t make me miss work again!”
Dream starts chuckling beside you.
“I’ll fucking hunt you for sport! Stop fucking laughing, you goddamn bastard!”
Everyone’s laughing at you.
“GODDAMN IT. STOP!”
Nightmare wipes a tear from his eye. “Pardon me, your concerns just seem so… trivial. That's all.” He dares to ruffle your hair up, ear-to-nonexistent-ear grin adorning his face as he looks down at you. “I’ll excuse your childish impudence this time.”
You recoil from him. “Oh fuck off! I’m a grown-ass adult!” You rip a portal behind you, glancing over your shoulder to glare at him one last time. “Stay out of my world! I’ll kill you!” You disappear through the portal, muttering a massive string of curse words that only stops once the portal shuts behind you.
“I’ve never heard someone so powerful speak so…. Colorfully!” Ink releases a shuddery, awkward laugh.
This elicits a laugh from Nightmare. “I think I’ve had enough for today.” He turns and starts walking towards the castle entrance.
“Wait, what?” Dream whips around, reaching out toward his brother.
“We can catch up another day.” Nightmare doesn’t even bother to glance back, waving them off. Killer exchanges a glance with Dust and Horror before shrugging his shoulders and following after their boss.
Dream stares after them until they disappear behind the double doors of Nightmare’s castle. He only snaps out of his reverie when Blue and Ink approach him.
“I guess we go home?” Ink has his arms propped behind his head.
Dream heaves a sigh, running his bony hand down his face. “Yeah, I guess so.”
HUGE FUCKING SHOUTOUT TO ARTISTS WHO HAVE TROUBLE IMPROVING THEIR ART FOR WHATEVER REASON. ARTISTS WHO CAN BARELY MANAGE TO DRAW IN GENERAL BECAUSE OF DISABILITIES, ILLNESS, MENTAL ILLNESS, EXHAUSTION OR BEING TOO BUSY WITH OTHER AFFAIRS. YOU ARE STILL A GOOD ARTIST. HAVING THE WILL TO IMPROVE BUT NOT THE MEANS SUCKS. YOU'RE STILL DOING GREAT!
I've watched the entirety of the Underverse series and I am HOOKED! Also I've never wanted to strangle a character quite so much as I do with X!Gaster. What a stinky man >_<#
The whole concept of characters being so miserable that they turn to the dark side is kind of stupid. If I'm miserable I don't think I'd turn to the dark side, I'd probs kill myself or find some way to get myself killed

So I probably would fall to the hands of the cursed amulet or the devil making a deal with me lol Especially seeing as how characters in similar situations also had similar mindsets to mine and failed to find escape from their personal hells despite their best efforts.

Been recently into Cult of the Lamb and I've become so enamored with the game's lore that I couldn't help but make a self-insert ^^ Also my interpretation of the Lamb
My self-insert is named Magi and she was originally a follower of The One Who Wait's original cult before he was sealed away by the Bishops. Through a series of events, she ended up being stuck in Heket's cult for a long time after TOWW was sealed away until the Lamb showed up one day and slaughtered Heket, then recruited Magi into his following because she has a wealth of experience helping to run and manage a successful cult from before the downfall of TOWW, so she becomes his right-hand woman.
