‘well, you certainly don’t gather that sort of REPUTATION for being only mediocre. for the most part, he was very ahead of his time.’ thankfully, the girl was reading hamlet and not one of the copies of the TAMING of the shrew she had hidden in the darkest crevices of the library. even for the time, the bard had shown such ANTIQUATED ideals on how a woman should be treated.

“Yes, I suppose I should have thought of that,” was her apologetic reply, “But one hears so much about Shakespeare, I just assumed he was made out to be a legend.” And here it was, another instance where her unconventional upbringing brought her mortification. No matter how hard Judy tried to run away from her past, it always found ways of catching up with her. She supposed the logical thing would be to explain her lack of previous acquaintance with Shakespeare and move on, but she was a proud creature and wouldn’t be able to stand the pity.

“Do you have a FAVORITE?” she asked instead, “I’m trying to expand my literary horizons and would love some recommendations.”

“You are… speaking very quickly, fraulein,” It is clear that Brigid has understood perhaps a third of what Jerusha has said, simply due to the fact that the girl seemed able to vocalise a novel without so much as a breath. “Something… you are saying with spiders? I am sorry, I do not understand.”

“My apologies,” she hastened to reassure Brigid, “I do tend to speak quickly sometimes, especially when excited.” It was a remnant of her John Grier Home upbringing -- growing up with sixty orphans, you learned early on to speak fast or never be heard, and it was a hard habit to shake. “I was talking about Daddy-Long-Legs actually,” she repeated, her tone much calmer this time around, “They aren’t the most -- er -- adorable of creatures, but they do not deserve to bear the brunt of the custodial staff’s ire, don’t you think?

So this was New York -- Julia Pendleton’s New York, for it was hard for Jerusha to separate one from the other. It lived up to it’s reputation of being fast-paced and intimidating. As Jerusha made her way across the metropolis, she couldn’t help but feel thrilled at the prospect of being here. Oh, how she wished Mrs. Lippett could see her now -- Jerusha Abbott, the oldest orphan at John Grier Home, rubbing shoulders with the crème de la crème of Manhattan.

It had taken some convincing to escape from the Pendleton’s stately home, but Jerusha needed respite from the stuffiness of her surroundings; living in mansions was exhausting! Novels often neglected to mention that, a mistake she would rectify in her magnum opus. That, however, was why she found herself strolling the busy streets, forging a path for herself, gathering new adventures to write about.

“Oh --” she snapped out of her reverie when her arm bumped against another’s “ -- I apologize, I wasn’t paying attention for a moment there.”
