In the Aftermath

Curiosity nodded in confirmation. That was what some called them. It was a welcome name, it brought them happiness to be regarded as a protector, it was all they had wanted for a long time. Trying to engage, they made a sequence of gestures, at each of the Ghosts and around them all, accompanied by a cluster of beeps. They were trying to find out it Vega had any information on what happened to leave everything in this state.
“They’ve been mute since…. we’ve met.” Avi admitted. “If we can find a datapad…they can write for themselves… until then we try our best.”
Curiosity chuffed, blasting air through their cheeks in frustration. They gestured slowly to the Ghosts, and repeated a more deliberate questioning warble.
“Yes, ah… what happened? Where is the Light?” Curiosity nodded, so that was what had been lost. They could just tell, just barely sense it was gone.
Vega paused, weighing the gravity of the question. Curiosity didn’t know what had happened. They had been wandering out here without any idea of what was going on in the City. The flock of Ghosts suddenly dropping without any explanation must’ve been terrifying, she realised. She lowered her head slightly, and looked in the direction of where she knew the City to be.
“The Light is gone.” She told them quietly. “As is the City. We were attacked by a Cabal fleet. Hundreds of ship descended from the sky, took us completely by surprise. We didn’t stand a chance. They... they did something to the Traveller. Used some kind of machine to cut off the Light. Now none of us have it.”
And they were reduced to scavenging, just like the Fallen. Taking whatever they could find and looking for a place to regroup and hopefully gather some kind of resistance. They would need all the help they could get if they were to take back their home.
“I’ve heard there’s some kind of Farm being used as a temporary base for Guardians. I’m heading there now. You’re welcome to accompany me if you want.”
