So... I have a jewish fantasy story idea...
If anyone has any critique or suggestions, please let me know! So, I’m thinking of a world with a medieval level of technology, maybe up to the late renesanse if the story calls for it. I might even go gasslight fantasy or steampunk. Magic is a thing people have or dont, and comes in varying degrees. However, one can learn to harness even modest talent with education. Greater tallent makes it simpler to do things, but is harder to control, like a fire hose as apposed to a garden hose or a kitchen sink sprayer. The tone of the story will be lighthearted and comedic, think Discworld rather than Westros. On to the plot: it begins with the arranged marriage of the daughter of a Sofer scribe to a promising young yeshiva graduate, who is also in possession of a mild magical talent. Nothing too out of the ordinary there. Mild magical talent is common in the population and is seen as an asset in a man, as it can be used for work or to defend the home. Women with such gifts usualy dont know it because they dont get the education to use it. Both of the couple is pretty happy with the arrangement even if they don’t know eachother well yet, since he’s from another town. The girl, while not being able to go to yeshiva because she is a girl, was taught reading and Torah by her father and mother. The fun begins about a week into thier marriage when he learns, to his delight, that she can read, and lets her borrow one of his basic magic texts for a nice evening read… and she lights the kitchen table on fire with a massive fireball… without even trying. What ensues are the wacky adventures of gung ho Yiddish wife running around a fantasy version of Europe and the Mediterranean, saving people and things and solving problems with her good humored but much more practical husband in tow, providing guidance as she learns how to control her massive power flow and generally acting as voice of reason. I plan for them to be very much in love and dedicated to eachother, with a super healthy relationship, with the conflict coming from the world around them. Is this something that sounds good?
