I’m reading a lot of things that concern me in this brand-new version of the Banana Fish fandom, but something that seems to come across my dash regularly is the idea that a certain type of fan isn’t welcome here. Sometimes it’s veiled in a warning that BF isn’t a fluffy love story, and I fell for that disguise at first, thinking that it was fair to warn folks that they are entering dark territory. But more recently, this has evolved into “x-type fan should stay away”, and I disagree with this wholeheartedly.

Banana Fish isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, to be sure, but it’s everybody’s right to sort that out themselves. None of us have the right to say that any fan should stay away, no matter what aspect of the story they love or in what way they express this. Some folks seem to be afraid that a certain type of fan might ruin their own experience of the show, but I strongly feel that if your fun is ruined by the effusions of other fans, then maybe the issue is yours, not theirs.

I’ve been in fandoms that have gone down in history as toxic, and I have zero interest in Banana Fish becoming one of them.
