Did Swift MEAN to give Damien a case of sleepless nights, fussing over lil' ol' him like an anxious parent or jilted lover ? Certainly not . . . but he's tickled to have had that effect.

At least, that he SEEMS to have. Thorn's a TOUGH goddamn read, even to Swift, but the detective picks up on little things : the split second between his surprise and his self - collected reaction, a little extra something behind his eyes, the roses . . .

Wait -- the ROSES ?

"Well, let's not be too hasty, Harvey," He interjects without greeting the other man ( why would he ? ) "The MEMORIAL might've been uh, PREMATURE , but my APARTMENT could use some brightening up."

He extends his glass with princely expectation and flashes a toothy grin. "What COLOR didja get me, Dames ? "

Damien knows better than to pry into Swift's affairs, where Renee might have coaxed something like the truth from the detective, but there is no such outright gentleness in the space that currently exists between the Antichrist and P.I. So, it appears Damien will just have to drop it - though he's too keenly aware that his vulnerability has been breached.

Damien obliges the Detective pulling another expensive vintage from the top shelf of the bookcase, and handing Swift the entire bottle. Harvey pauses, lip quivering at the direct contradiction to his employer's demands and the subsequent peasantry Damien's actions suggest. He wants to say something - but, Mr. Dean is a lazy bark, and no bite. Damien himself shrugs his shoulders, not rushing a response as he pretends to have to recollect whatever flower choices he had already painstakingly selected. " Oh ? I think the colors this month - well, it's august, so - mostly green and yellow juliet roses. I figured summer was dying away, so - " He pauses, a tight smile plastered on his face. Is that Swift's sentimentality on display too ... or does Damien desperately need to believe that's what his question implies ? " Your apartment will be fine without adding a drain to Damien's finan - !! "

Harvey's voice falters as Damien shoves him out the door, the expression of surprise and hurt behind the assistant's bug-eyes is almost comical if it weren't so sincere. " It's already been paid to the end of the year; I'm not getting that deposit back. " He closes the door against the other's protests and sighs. " If you want them sent to you - you can take that up with reception. I doubt Makoto Azuma is going to be picking up any calls from me anytime soon. He has this strange idea I'm too particular and hard to collaborate with ...which, of course I am. I just find it a bit rude he'd mention it so openly. "

Damien clears his throat to indicate he's no longer comfortable with the subject of his trite human-leaning sentiments. " It is ... good to see you. I meant that. How have things been ? "

Yeah, that right - just bro it out and no one's going to remember this in 10 minutes.

" Swift, you're lucky you caught me on a good day, can I refill your glass ? " He's fighting the urge to pick the detective up and twirl him like some kind of long lost love. ( Hell, he'd throw in some kisses if it meant he wouldn't have to worry like this ever again. ) Before Damien can say much else Harvey interrupts: " Are you still fine with a dozen roses being sent to the Swift Memorial ? The florist called, sir ... " Damien shakes his head while Harvey's face pales. " It doesn't seem necessary. Thank you, Harvey. "

He wastes no more time on the personal assistant.

" A two weeks notice would have sufficed you know ? "

" That's a question for the ages. I'm sure he would apologize once he would wake up and remember what happened" she was definitely glad that she didn't have any children and she had no intention of ever becoming a mother.

" You also have a daughter, if I'm not mistaken?" she had never met the daughter but she could already guess that she wouldn't have behaved like her brother.

" I wish you would have asked me to reschedule our meeting, I don't wish to be a bother" she had been hoping that he would agree to her business proposal, but she doubted that he had the time to read the document she had sent.

He shakes his head and gives her a tentative smile. He tries to soften the blow with a calm tone and kind words: " Mrs. King, we can skip the pleasantries. I feel as if you came here today knowing my answer in this matter. Didn't you ? You strike me as a very perceptive woman and as such - I'll come out and say it: publicly aligning myself with you and your husband's brand ? It would be something of a social suicide for my business, and that is putting it lightly. " ( Slater King is not a man he would ever align himself with. The man creeps him out & that's saying something when the antichrist doesn't want anything to do with you. )

His voice is kind, but firm in his resolve. Damien can't help but feel a strange bit of empathy for Frida, something in the way she sits across from him stoically in the face of outright rejection says she's used to making the most of a bad situation. " If I could give you some advice ? It would be to leave Slater King in the dust where you found him and instead focus on your own brand identity. I know you must think ill of me speaking so candidly about your husband - but, I have certain misgivings about his character. I am hardly ever wrong in these matters. "

His eyes meet Frida's and for a moment - he looks every bit the part of the wise patriarch seated behind the large desk:

" If you were my daughter - I'd tell you to get out while you can. That is the only advice I have for you - I'll have Ophelia follow up with you in future, if things change. Have a good day, Mrs. King. "

He's had very little sleep, from the events unfurling around him at work to last night when he had to pick his inebriated son - Aleister - up from a party he never had any business attending.

Now, in the comfort of his office - with the door closed and Tylenol taken - he closes out the story as plainly as he can: " That drunken idiot looked me in my face at a stop light and said: ' Dad, don't lie - are you a virgin ? ' I didn't know exactly how to answer that without yelling - so, I just said: ' Times like this ? I wish I were, son. ' Why are children like this ? "

So much for hanging his hopes and aspirations on his eldest child.

Damien stopped to rake his fingers through his hair, eyes far-off as if he had been transported elsewhere entirely. After a moment or so, he seemed to snap back to the here and now.

“ Trouble is, I temporarily forgot all my stuff resides here and I’m terribly materialistic. I’m sure you can see the problem therein, correct ? Called the whole thing off right then … “

He coughed in an attempt to dispel the uneasiness at admitting a defeat. His follow up was just as lackluster in the intent, with no real venom to be found:

“ Rest assured, I’ll get around to it eventually though ! “

Damien's cheeks puff for a moment as he considers whether this could be real concern or a slight. ( He settles on the former with a deep sigh. ) He doesn't bother looking Margo in the eye when he decides to speak: " Listen - you didn't hear this from me, but ... I am strange and off-putting ... but, I am no one's ' baby girl ', as you say. " Perhaps his irritability lies in the fact it's his coveted day off, and the damned clergy still won't let him rest. He locks eyes on the undercover priest seated on the bench across from the café. For a split moment - he hears a terrible rumbling sound in his ears, as if a large army is rumbling forward in a charge. Tires squeal and suddenly there's a terrifying deathly calm before the screaming of passersby starts. Damien's eyes seem to light with amusement as he ignores the other patrons rushing out to see if they can help untangle the priest's body from the car's now stained bumper. He sips his decaf coffee and takes a tiny bite of his pastry, surprised Margo is still seated and hasn't joined the throng of people crowding the accident outside. " What was it you were saying again ? "
