Tea time with Sofi and Murderbot.
ART being brought back in NE. To me. If you even care
network effect be like
carry you with me
Do you think you could draw the picture from Fugitive Telemetry where is Dr Mensah, Pin-Lee, Secunit, and Bharadwaj and they’d just been asked if GrayCris reps would be allowed on station (it’s page like 30 or something). I really love your style and ur mbd art (ha) always makes me happy
i have actually wanted to draw this for a while and this ask reminded me to do it.... here u go!!!
Mensah was walking down the steps away from the council offices and I was standing behind her between Pin-Lee and Dr. Bharadwaj. We were all looking to the side, with various what-the-fuck expressions. (One of the journalists had just asked the council spokesperson if GrayCris reps would be allowed at the meeting.) (It had been such a stupid question, I had forgotten not to have an expression.)
i’ve been obsessed with a series called The Murderbot Diaries, about a neurotic android that just wants to watch soap operas in between saving humans 😂 here’s some stuff from the first novella All Systems Red!!
of course the events of NE don't change the fact that ART's a massive fucking MI that can take care of itself.
but also i don't think threat assessment will ever let go of the fact that something possessed and killed ART while SecUnit wasn't around to do anything about it.
Artificial Condition conclusion: Kids are Soft and Fluffy
SecUnit's parenting speedrun: From "might be young" and "not children" to "small" to "kids" to "tiny human to look after that I couldn't possibly abandon—"
Also:
...The young people in question are stated to have five kids "of various sizes" between them.
Uh. It's sounding like SecUnit has maaaybe worked almost exclusively with adult miners and middle-aged scientists prior to this?
These folks are probably the smallest humans it's ever met!
from that one aside in system collapse when mb said amena made its hair fluffy to make it feel better
Do I actually know more than four colours...?
No.
Sudden desire to draw Murderbot jumping off of a building with Mensah. (Just for the vibes, did not re-read Exit Strategy, so I don't remember the details)
not a human, not a machine / print
Something about how constructs are called it/its (a pronoun tradicionaly used for objects), but corporations are called they/them (a pronoun tradicionaly used for people).
It says a lot about where the power balance is.
What really touches me, and strikes me, and enthralls me about Murderbot (tv series and books) is the love.
Murderbot is awkward and complicated and different and doesn’t quite understand a lot of stuff and understands a lot of other stuff far too well and is fiercely independent and hates everyone and yet - loves.
Loves deeply and intensely and to its core and the circle of people and bots it loves just keep gets wider and wider.
And it’s loved in return and that’s the bit that enthralls me. (Yes, I know why, the meaning is very clear to me). Its humans love it and don’t require it changes (once they know it). they love it enough to create entirely new laws to protect it. To scramble out of bed on the middle of the night to block security cameras. To offer sanctuary but not be hurt when it doesn’t take it. To take time on a mission to patch its suit.
And that - that really moves me.
"It calls itself 'Murderbot,'"
There's something to be said about this quote from Artificial Condition:
If you’ve gotten stuck with one of the bad contracts, it might cause the humans to order the HubSystem to use your governor module to immobilize you.
It's literally what Gurathin did in the previous book. No wonder Murderbot was so pissed at him.
It feels like a subtle undercurrent in Murderbot Diaries is not, "humans and augmented humans befriend SecUnit and learn that constructs are people", but maybe "SecUnit befriends bots and constructs other than itself and SecUnit learns that those are also people"
