Large crowds gathered across Poland on Saturday to mark the 82nd anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising, observing a minute of silence at 5 p.m. - the “W Hour” when the revolt began on August 1, 1944 - and honoring the Polish resistance fighters and civilians who opposed Nazi German occupation. 

The uprising, one of the largest underground resistance operations in occupied Europe, involved an estimated 40,000–50,000 insurgents and lasted 63 days before being crushed on October 2, 1944. 

Historians estimate that around 150,000–180,000 civilians and 16,000–18,000 resistance fighters were killed, after which the surviving population was expelled and much of Warsaw was systematically destroyed.
